I don't know how they do it for this price. Taxes and gate fees means they are keeping you in the air for 30 hours for about $600, $20 per hour. Nice airline, too.

Just be careful on the return flight.

If it is the one I had earlier in the year, you have to fly north from San Francisco (SFO) to Vancouver (YVR) - and then from Vancouver to Australia (e.g. BNE).

The standard SFO flight to YVR is early evening, with the YVR to Aus flights late evening. If for whatever reason that SFO>YVR flight is delayed, chances are you will not make the connection to Australia.

If this happens, then they try to put you on one of the midnight Qantas flights from SFO to Aus, and you then may need a connection should Sydney etc not be your final destination. They generally don't allow significant time between the Sydney arrival / customs-clearance and transfer to next Australia city destination, so you end up missing that flight too. A complete cluster ####

If travelling the BNE to SFO route, it's not a direct flight. You transit via YVR first (requiring a Visa even if not leaving the airport), and then end up getting stuck in the airport for another hour or so having to clear all the security measures to get in to the US.

It's far easier in my opinion just to go to the US direct.

    • Are you allowed to leave the airport with the 7 or 15 hour layovers on the flights above?

theres not much you can do if the plane lands a midnight and flight leaves at 7am
but there is one that was land 7am and leave 1030pm - you could get a day trip if you allowed to leave airport.

      • You need a Canada ETA Visa to transit via Canada (you apply online and it takes about 10 minutes and costs about $15).
So presumably you can potentially exit the airport. Whether or not you have to collect your luggage with such a long layover, I've no idea.

    • I meant to state United flight too.. not Qantas.

  • with the recent news make sure you can get a refund if it doesn't exist by the time of your flight

43 hours flight time definitely is not for me.

    • Agree. That is punishing to have to fly to Calgary stopover there for 7 hours and then Vangroovy and back to Australia. It’s like an endurance test.

There's an option to blow it out to 50hrs 50mins SFO MEL going via Edmonton.

  • STA travel has better flights.
Example Sydney to SFO 17th august to 24th, 952 vs over 1000 with yours.
