  • how useful are these without the hue bridge?

    • +2

Just a normal lamp. However, the bridge is now $38. I think it is a good price if you want to buy.

    • Also curious. Can I just ask Google to dim the bulb itself with nothing else?

      • +2

No, either the Hue switch or the bridge is required (but currently cheap!). Recommend the bridge.

It's because Hue lights don't run on WiFi but a separate network called ZigBee that's managed by the bridge.

        • Thanks, will have to think about it. Only in a 2-bedroom apartment so probably not actually worth it for me ATM.

        • +3

What extra functionality Hue bridge provides over Echo plus(Zigbee built-in)?
          Control lights with Hue app?

          • +2

@Dave1988: I have an Echo Plus and ended up buying a bridge purely because it has much better support for dawn simulation (my bedroom light turns on slowly over 30 minutes each morning).

I'm sure there are other features too though.

edit: I just remembered that's not the main reason at all. The main reason I bought it is because I wanted to be able to control my Hue bulbs with Home Assistant.

@Dave1988: The Hue bridge is just what makes these controllable. The benefit is your lights connect to the bridge which then connects to your network as one device. where as other systems allow each individual light to connect to your wifi network as its own device, potentially congesting your network

            • +1

@Justaddgrum: I think you've slightly misunderstood @Dave1988's question. If you have an Echo Plus it has zigbee support already built-in so you can control Hue bulbs without the bridge.

      • Hue bulbs are a ripoff tbh. If you just want to try these out and don't want to invest in a Hue bulb + bridge, you're probably better off trying out these, which work on wifi and connect directly to Google Assistant.

Could you relink that one mate?

        • I do have Kmart genio, the only downside I found is it's still not dim enough when you set it on 1% brightness compare to my Lifx original.
I don't have Hue though could be the same case as Lifx bulb. 1% brightness is great whenever our little Bub wakes up in the night.

          • @Dave1988: I don't actually own any Genio (I only have Hue) so I can't compare them for you. I'm not particularly happy with the minimum brightness on the Hue. There is absolutely no difference between 1% and 5%.

  • too bad they dont work with mi gateway

    • Was about to ask that.. Thanks

      Will avoid.

  • Although not listed in the limited stock deals on Amazon, it looks like these are out of stock, and now only available from other sellers. I had them in my cart at the time, and got a message about it being moved to 'save for later'. The Hue Bridge is also out of stock.

    • Me too - I joined my prime trial and then found I couldn't buy any of the lights I wanted! Didn't realise they'd disappear…
