DSE Telstra Pre-Paid T-Touch Tab $99 Instore

340

My first bargain, Was at Dick Smith Carnes Hill and saw this sign, so went and checked out the catalogue and the optus tab was $99. Pointed this out to a staff member and walked away with a Telstra T-Touch Tab for $99. (I know its not the best tablet, but good enough for the kids).

  • What sign? Can you post a photo or link to the receipt?
Well done though. Have been expecting this tablet to drop in price.

    • +1

The sign that he posted a photo of already!
It was uploaded before your comment was posted (if not when the deal was submitted).
Copy of the receipt would be good though.

      • Thanks. Sorry, was not getting the photo before :-) My bad.

        • photos (or screengrabs of website) take a while to display after posting, but if you click the "link box" it'll take you to the uploaded photo/website.

  • +2

Sorry, the receipt has all my personal details and the IMEI number. I like sharing, but not that much.

    • +1

crop, blur or white out that detail.
This may well be a single store only type deal without a receipt.

      • just like the catalogues, the apology notices are company wide with dse

    • +3

      MS PAINT…

  • +1

not available anywhere in melbourne….DSE rep said last stock arrived today and no more stock coming in….they might start this deal in every store….lets watch n watch!!! plz post if any other store is honoring the same deal..

    • the apology notices are sent from head office

they are company wide (if a store doesn't have them posted, tell them to check their pos for new apology notices)

  • Probably nation wide.no need to rush.they have to dump this one somewhere anyway.wait for further price drop.

  • is the telstra one any good compared to the optus one??

    • IMO not as good because the other has a better custom rom following (easier for 3rd party development) and it is extremely easy to unlock for free using said 3rd party community

    • +1

The Telstra T-Tab has better spec than Optus MyTab, However, the screen on the T-Tab is horrible, making it almost unusable.

  • +1

O.K. I edited the receipt, now how do I upload a second picture?

    • You either need a mod to edit the post, or you may be able to Edit your post and upload a new photo… I'm unsure if you can edit the photo once it's been uploaded though.

  • +2

Worked at George St Sydney. The apology note was even pasted to all the cash registers! Great first post.

  • +3

Yes confirmed with 2 stores. One will not have extra stock until next week

  • Is there huge difference between Telstra (E6571) and Optus (E6572)?????

    • negged for what?

      • -6

I didn't neg you, but probably because the way you asked it. Telstra (E6571) and Optus (E6572), really? you couldnt just say Optus MyTab and Telstra T-Touch Tab?

    • Yes

  • Compared to Optus MyTab
CPU 768MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 Armv7(should support full Flash) vs 600MHz ARMV6(no Full Flash), needs confirm
RAM 256MB VS 512MB? needs confirm
    weight 500g vs 400g
    850 Next-G VS 900 3G
    Android 2.1 vs Android 2.2(or CyanogenMod 2.3.4)
Is 2.2 Froyo avaialble for TTT? 2.1 is very slow compared to 2.2, but if it only has 256MB RAM, forget 2.2
As I know there's no custom firmware available for TTT

    • No FM radio and surely not upgradable to 2.2 most importantly poor quality dispaly.

    • +1

yes you can upgrade to 2.2 Froyo on TTT and it can stream FM radio

Download Link Android 2.2.2 for Huawei S7
      http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/huawei-ideos-s7-technica…

      • +2

Wouldn't you know it, I bought a TTT from Kmart last weekend for $149, upgrading to 2.2.2 after a day. I confirm the 2.2.2 upgrade & instructions linked above work great, and solved some problems straight away.

If you're used to an iPad the TTT has very obvious shortcomings, such as the relatively unresponsive resistive screen with poor viewing angles, the short battery life, the almost complete lack of protective cases that aren't sleeves, and no USB charging.

But for the price, you get a nice (if heavy) Kindle reader, 7" GPS, radio, Telstra Next G reception, wi-fi hotspot and all that other nice FroYo stuff.

I've ordered a car charger and extra wall charger to go with it for about $11 delivered. These are designed for old Moto phones and supposedly have the correct 3.2mm tip. They have lower power output than the supplied Huawei charger, but I'm going with the "better a slow charger than no charge" philosophy.

        http://www.cellphoneshop.net/eltrchformoc2.html

        • +1

Definitely, I got an "extras" pack with mine from DSE for free - containing a case and a car charger.

    • +1

      I bought 2 optus and 1 ttt

ttt can install flash 10.3 from the market
      ram is 512MB
Official 2.2 from other countries, and free unlockable

However the screen is just like the age of HTC Touch pro. But for the price of 99…

      • Is there a difference in screen viewing angle and clarity btw the two?

  • +2

From most reviews/feedback, Optus My tab is better.
    http://www.cnet.com.au/optus-my-tab-339307123.htm
    http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/review/broadband/optus/mytab…

But I like the telstra handy kick-stand (would be very useful for My Tab)

  • This should be 'Huawei IDEOS S7' with Resistive screen as the 'Huawei IDEOS S7 Slim' has capacitive screen ,HDMI out and 2.2 Froyo

  • Can this be unlock for free? and since it is UMTS 850/2100Mhz, I can still use it with virgin mobile bb(900/2100Mhz)? And it is upgradable to 2.2 custom mod?

edit: ordered one in from one of the dse store in Brissy… going to grind the whirl forum tonight to decide if I will keep it…

    • To answer my own question, yes it can be unlock with a custom rom ozpete mentioned below, but 3g wise I do not know if 2100Mhz operates outside the cbds <—noob me haha

  • Just bought one in North Syd DSE, now only the display unit left.

  • +3

Bought one but rep says they have lots more in warehouse.

Funny how these were supposed to be ipad killers, like many other 7in tabs when they came out. At least now I can understand that while it might be great for those who want to play with their unit, like the old Dos heads in the past. It is quite limited. Amazing how small the 7in really is vs a 10inch

Then you need a FIRM touch to scroll and activate things.

All that said, its a $99 device, I trust the Optus unit is better value - at least from the raves here by the Drolls, but since DS staff have said in many stores and given they have substituted this for the Optus unit, thats past history. ie SOLD OUT. so this is the only cheap alternative..

According to my research this can be upgraded to 2.2 (norwegian? rom), which also unlocks the device, and probably voids warranty. It looks a little to complicated for me, I'll have someone more technical do it for me if they think its something they can handle.

Hopefully that will improve the experience

Plus VOTE, is for the deal post rather than the unit.

    • at least from the raves here by the """Drolls""",

      LOL :-)

    • Not about better value but about qualiy.example..screen display, battery life and so on

    • +2

Optus MyTab is still available at Harvey Norman on rain check, at least that is the case here in WA.

      • yeah been looking around many shops, non left for the telstra tab, harvey norman offered me to "pre-order"/ rain check mytab instead.

    • +1

norwegian rom to unlock network. then indonesia rom to the latest froyo.

  • Can anyone confirm flash capability?

  • Just tried to find this in my local DSE… No dice

  • +1
    • You have to pay postage. I'd rather go there. Plenty of them are in stock

  • +2

I wouldn't bother…these things are terrible, sorry IMHO anyway! If you can't get a MyTab/ZTE just check the droid tab forums for a better solution! :)

  • +1

The good guy store is taking pre-order for this with 20% deposit via credit card. i just booked mine:)

  • +2

Officeworks price match and beat $94.95 FTW.

  • Can it make phone calls like mytab

    • +1

yes. actually easier than mytab. It has two call bottons

  • I read the Mytab doesn't have flash. Can it ever have flash?
If not doesn't this give the T-Tab a big advantage?

    • +1

Mytab probably won't be able to have Flash support (CPU speed limitation).
However, YouTube app. is available for Mytab so you can play YouTube movies. Plus, there is also Skyfire browser, which converts some Flash to HTML5.

However, to be honest, neither tablet is suitable for heavy gaming (remember: with resistive touch screen -> currently there is no multi-touch, which means you cannot press move right button and one of the action buttons at the same time -> only 1 will register). None of the Gameloft HD games will play on Mytab (doubt that they will work on T-Tab). Plants vs Zombies doesn't seem to work on Mytab either. Mytab comes with Raging Thunder 2… which is not too bad.

My main gripe with low end tablets (and some low end Android phones) is the amount of internal memory. Even with App2SD, it is so easy to use up the internal app space.

Mytab (at the moment) has a very good resale value. A few people bought some for $99 each and getting pretty good return on eBays. I don't agree with this behaviour, but… there is nothing I can do about it.

$99 - pretty good price for the T-Tab.

  • i read mytab came with 3 GB of data. does it come with anything from big T. or do I need to buy from beginning.

  • heads up, office works is officially selling the t-touch for $99 as well so no point price matching

  • +1

ok I can confirm that officeworks has dropped the price to 99.
i just managed to grab the last one from werribee today.

    My verdict so far

out of the box buggy system crap battery life however,

    with Norwegian 2.2 update,
    faster, improved battery life, flash

with 2.2.2 custom rom update 1.2.1
very stable, good looks, faster than Norwegian, battery abt the same, flash , better touch, app2sd and the list goes on….

if you know how to flash and update custom ROMS this is the device for you, the cpu can be over clocked and even CM7 2.3.4 is in the works (expect some video calling from Gtalk)

having used Optus Mytab for three months, I think now apart from limited battery telstra's offering surpasses the Mytab by miles and YES the touch improves significantly running custom ROM

love the form factor and although ZTE and Huwaei both are Chinese manufacturers, T-Touch Tab feels slightly less plastici and has a nice weight to it.

i think for anyone looking for a cheap phone/tablet for light browsing and other online bits, you cant get better than this.

and finally, T-touch tab came with a bonus 3 gigs of data and $10 credit to sweeten things up.

    A + for me

    • ive flashed indonesian 2.2 already, as well as the cm7, but how did you flash the 2.2.2 custom rom update 1.2.1? i read in the instructions it says copy to internal sd card, but our version doesnt have internal card…

this is the one im trying to flash: http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/huawei-ideos-s7-technica…

apart from the battery life, which is pretty terrible, this seems to be a pretty good tablet! i got mine from JBhifi who pricematched the DSE deal :)

      • dorz
i have got the instructions for you see my post below.

    • You twisted my arm…just ordered one from Officeworks. Flash player is a big plus and other nice features include built-in kickstand/stylus, front camera, optical scroll pad, docking port. The big drawbacks are poor battery life and no usb charging.
What's the expiry date on the prepaid sim?
I know that the Norwegian ROM unlocks the device but if you later flash the Indo ROM…Does it remain unlock?

      • the docking port is useless as there doesn't seem to be any accessories available, has anyone found a dock for this device?

      • how bad is the battery life?

        • heard from some articles, average is 3 hours (spec 4-5 hours) vs mytab for 7 hours (spec 9-10 hours)

        • in my tests with new firmware and custom firmware its about 3 to 3.5 hours of light usage. it is not great by any standard but should be sufficient for commuting and light browsing

  • Is there a difference in screen viewing angle and clarity btw the optus and telsta tablets..

  • usb charging can be fixed pretty damn quickly if you know what you're doing… just go to jaycar, get the same power plug as the normal charger has, and solder a couple of wires from the red and black wires inside a usb lead, to the plug… not too hard if you're good with a soldering iron :)

still trying to work out how to flash the custom rom update… anyone help?

    • Went to Jaycar today, oddly they do not have the right size… Guess I will have to buy the car charging pack and mod that to a usb…

  • +4

ok I have decided to write up a short noob-proof tutorial to update T-tab to 2.2.2 custom rom for new T-Tab Owners and fellow ozbargainers. being a noob myself, please feel free to jump in if i have done something wrong or there is a better way of doing this.

Thanks to all the developers who put effort to save this Tablet

step 1 is very easy to follow but step 2 is not as much and totally optional

step 1 out of the box
1.1 register to xda-developers if you have not already
1.2 remove the SD card from your T-TAB put in to your computer and format it Fat32 and put aside the sd card for now
1.3 go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060640 and download froyo 2.2.2 Norwegian update (you could download the indonesian update as they are 99 % same)
1.4 once downloaded follow the instructions here http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/huawei-ideos-s7-technica…
1.4.1 basically what it says is unzip the download. put the extracted folder and files in to root of your sd card which basically place when you double click on your sd card from my computer. folder structure should be
    +SDCard
    -+dload
    —-+updata.app
    —-+unlmt.cfg

run the process mentioned in the link, its virtually noob free.

just dont forget to remove your sd card once you are done.

delete all the files on your sd card before putting it back

    STEP 2

any 2.2.2 rom is pretty good in its own right but the custom rom 1.2.1 is awesome got a great browser with neat little shortcuts, fast as hell so now tothe fun part.

2.1 you will need following things so look in to one of the three links in this post

2.1.1 CWM 2.5.1.8 Auto Install Script - by xaueious
    2.1.2 download USB adb drivers

2.1.3 download custom firmware from this post
    http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/huawei-ideos-s7-technica…

    from where it says

    Current
    FroyoFusion Release 2 - Apps2sd
    (DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION)

2.2 go to settings in your Tab, Application>> and turn on USB Debugging (Very important.

2.3 go to Control panel in your windows>>> add a new hardware>>>> dont let it search automatically>>go to have disc and browse to where you saved the usb drivers. select HWUSBADB file (you might have to extract the zip file and be carefull you select the right windows system drivers type you have)

2.4 next step is to install Clockwork recovery via automated script

    connect tab with your computer

extract CWM 2.5.1.8 Auto Install Script >> double click install_now and follow the instructions on that new window
this is a tricky step as at each step you might have to install adb drivers so wait on every step

if you dont get the device confirmation on each step (Like long series of code and a ? with fast boot) dont move ahead

if all goes well you should have pushed CWM to your device.

2.5 copy the new custom ROM to the SD card. remove power lead and usb cable

    shut-down tablet
hold MENU + Green Call Button + Power button until you get in to recovery

once in recovery navigate with volume +- home and menu button
apply zip from the sd card

select zip from the sd card
    select fusion ROM and flash

it will restart couple of time once done.

if everything is successful you will have you shiny new tab which is way better than Optus My tab

in my test Performance is sub par with My Old HTC Desire phone. it can run 4 flash videos simultaneously in the browser smoothly before crashing down which impressive.

hope this would help everyone. let us know if you have any troubles

    • thanks so much bamsegod :D

    • +1

      i installed this version: http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/huawei-ideos-s7-technica…

and then changed the screen resolution down to 120. to do this, you need to add a line into an extra file, effectively it scales everything smaller, which fits more menu items, more browser lines, more facebook? onto the same page… :)

      • +1

        dorz,
how did you get apps2sd working. i can partition ext2 on my 2 gb card that came with the tab. the tab is getting full
what i tried was created an ext partition (512 MB) from CWR and then swap size 256 MB.
on the spps2sd GUI says all apps are stored on sd card.

the problem is i cant setup ext 2 parttion, do you know any easy guides on it.

        Thanks

        • +1

I've got Apps2SD working on mine. Just use minitool partition wizard, resize your sd so that there is about 512MB unallocated, create a new primary ext2, and apply changes. I created a 1GB ext2 but I think 512MB is more than enough.

      • Can you please give me instructions on how to change the resolution?

        • +1

first you need to make sure your device has a root reader… i used root explorer. im pretty sure your device has to be rooted to access this.

          navigate to system > build.prop

Now edit the build.prop by holding your finger on it till the menu appears, and press edit in text file or whatever it is… if it doesnt let you, make sure up the top of root explorer the permissions are on RW instead of read only.

add the following value at the bottom:

          ro.sf.lcd_density=xxx

"xxx" being a number lower than 160 and higher than 120.. i chose 120 for mine. note this just makes everything smaller, it doesnt allow you to add more icons onto desktop or anything. so much nicer for menus and websites though, as it fits more in. a lower number means higher resolution, higher number means things are bigger :p

        • +1

Thanks. I just use a free app called LCDDensity. I think you can add more icons by changing the number of columns/rows in ADWSettings.

        • LCDdensity didnt work originally for mine because the density line wasnt actually in the file in the first place… once i added it in, then lcd density worked fine. still not hard to do it manually, all it takes is a text file edit and a reboot..

    • +1

2.3 continued: Make sure you download the Huawei USB ADB drivers from the official site
      http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwide/downloadCenter.do?meth…

search for 'ideos s7' , click on the 'huawei s7_usbdriver' download to download that, extract into a directory.

If you cannot find it, try direct link http://bit.ly/gjH9f9 for usb driver download.

After connecting tablet to computer, windows will look for the drivers, tell windows to search the directory you just extracted the files to.

Windows will prompt you twice for drivers, one for the Ideos Tablet, another for the Ideos ADB interface

After running the install_now.cmd file, the tablet will go into bootloader mode and ask for more drivers, point it to the extracted file directory again.

'Enter into fastboot mode' appears on device
      console:
      ? fastboot
      should appear
after pressing key to continue, this should appear:
      writing 'recovery'… OKAY

  • installed 2.2 , setcpu to 768mhz , work very smooth with Flash. so i can watch Tv show.
only downside is 2hr battery for movie, reading books around 7hrs.

    cheers
    mytab/t-tab user.

  • Price at DSE is now $149

  • Just bought last one from OW north ryde. Very nice unit.. a lot better then ZT180 or flytouch…
I am interested in flashing it but it seems that you lose GSM, GPS, Light sensor etc functionality with Norwegian or Indonesian update… Does that sound right..

    • snajper

in my tests you dont loose GPS for sure, with custom ROM you can set the brightness automatically so i presume light sensor is working as well. i am still using telstra prepaid that came with the box so i guess GSM is not affected as well.

see if you find something unusual. you can always go back to stock ROM bbut i think once you install it you would never wanna go back.

      Thanks

    • GPS would/can take up to 5 minutes for the first time you start the navigation on your tablet. but after that it should be fine.

  • today bought one in west ryde OW $99,maybe still in stock there

  • I bought one from OW Richmond $99, went home and flashed it with custom ROM. I like it so far, but again the battery is really a pain. I tried to install Plants VS Zombies from Amazon Appstore. I could hear the background music, but the screen was black. has anyone got PVZ working?

  • It's nice to hear the custom ROMs have improved the experience…the OOTB one I had wasn't particularly impressive when I looked at these! Major props to Bamsegod for all the work on guiding people through this too! :)

  • Just got one - the last one from my local OW. apparently there are still some at OW at Castle Hill and Taren Point in Sydney.

  • Wow finally upgraded it to indonesian version rom and it is very good tablet. does everything i need from the tablet. DSE is back up to $149 but some DSE stores are pricematching OW and include bonus case and car charger. My friend just bought 2.

    • do you know what the case and car charger brands are? i couldnt find any accessories that fit it in my local…

    • can you post a receipt so I can get it price matched at DSE :)

  • If anyone's looking to save some battery turn on Airplane mode and turn wireless back on if you need it.

No need for 3G Radio to be on if your not using it.

  • has anyone got the problem of low space, I move most apps to SD card but still get warning messages about space.
