264

*** UPDATE *** Receipt now added *** Pricematch time @ Hardly Normal or 5% less at Officeworks?
Please suggest how people can go about getting deal that I got & don't be fooled into taking anything less

http://upload.ozbargain.com/2011/06/19/6141_harvey_norman_re…
Mod: if applicable please post receipt wherever it should go.

G'day

I originally went looking for the Asus Eee PC Seashell 1015PEM from Hardly Normal for $249. Despite a phone call to reaffirm the price, when I arrived they were out of stock at their Taren Point Store (NSW).

The bait and switch may or may not have been used and they tried to get me to buy something of a lower spec level. (Also a much higher spec as well, for more $$$ of course)

I persisted until these appeared at $399. Ie. A newer chip that is also faster then the ASUS.
(I since discovered that the calculations should have been made at the published Netbook price of $379 as listed on their website - hence the price increase/change, if you have been watching this unfold)

HP Mini 110-3627TU

Processor Type: Intel Atom
Chip: N570
Processor Speed (GHz):1.66
Installed RAM (GB): 1
Hard Drive Size: 250GB
Screen Size: 10.1 inch
It also had a 6 cell battery - Do not recall the exact specs

It is $30.30 more expensive but I was happy to pay this.

Total price was $279.30ea. I paid $558.60 for my (2)two

Harvey Norman have most of their computers at 30% off, these are listed on their website at $376. So you might get it for even less but the way others are going I doubt it.

They are currently wrapped up for the boys and their upcoming birthdays.

http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256976268481/hp-mini…

Happy computing.

MOD: This deal is not confirmed. Please read comments below as there are user reports that many stores are not honouring the 30% off.

  • great price! OW is selling it for $374… wonder if they'll price match and take off 5%?
also has Dual Core which is pretty good too! :)

  • Excellent idea!!!

That will make it $355.30 and OW may have more in stock available in more places for everyone out there. :-)

    • $250.05. It was $376-30%. Seems like a good deal, especially with 6 cell. Does anyone know what sort of battery life this has.

      • Ah, perfect (with no need to buy anything else), ie, to use Am Ex's card to save $50 (if you haven't used it up earlier)

      • Yeah i have one of these, probably about 5 hours on average.

My only real comment is the fan surging on it, if its cold or hot its fine, but in the middle its up,down,up,down,up,down.

Other than that its a good computer.

    • does officework hold to sale prices? might give them a ring tomorrow

      • Pretty sure they say cheapest advertised price. This sale is advertised. Should be sweet.

    • just curious, what do you mean by "I persisted until these appeared"?

  • +1

    Around 8.5 hrs

    • Nice, is that from real life experience, or manufacture statements?

    • +1

For a second there I thought splinter "persisted until these appeared" for 8.5 hours! Talk about haggling! :)

  • manufacture i say 7 ish because of the specs

  • try the $50 discount with Amex if you spend $250. But register first.

    • you can't register anymore.

  • N570 is s'posed to be significantly faster than the ASUS '1015PEMs N550, but is that only when S/W has been written to use its 2nd core or what?

Any mixed-brand, netbook speed comparisons out there?

  • -1

I wonder if HN has a deal w/ OW, eg, to send buyers to OW, so HN can sell higher end laptops?

O'wise, why not price these to compete w/ OW's Acers @ $249 or less?

    • because they are completely different machines one is 2 year old single core processor other is dual core modern processor

      • Thanks for that…

That could affect amount of power drain.

Tell me, who's is the OLDER netbook, &
        how do you know? ;-)

        (From N570, I'd guess it's the ASUS…?)

  • +1

As usual, there seem to be several variations on this netbook's theme. HN's is supposed to be the:

    . HP Mini 110-3627tu PC (LQ858PA)

where stuff in parentheses can make a big difference,

If you get that LQ… stuff, you may also be getting:

    • Bluetooth; &
    • 7200 rpm HDD

The faster HDD can eat more of your battery power,
but may also reduce your task complete times

I guess the NEXT incrementally "better" netbooks
to be expected will have at least 1x USB 3.0 port

…the one after that will have maybe 2x USB 3.0's

    Then what?

Heavier 9-cell batteries (already available from HK
for older ASUS netbooks) for more run time?

The rule seems to be: "LAST in, Best configured"

…at least while stocks last or until 1st July,
when prices can be expected to rise for even slow
    netbooks.

    Buy wisely… In THIS case:

    a. Make sure it's: HP Mini 110-3627tu PC (LQ858PA)

    b. If OfficeWorks has 'em, get 'em at ~$250

You'll still weep when really fast configurations
arrive for $199 or less (eg, if the world fills
with more iPad-groupies, & no one buys netbooks)

    …but you'll still be way ahead, & won't have
to buy COSTLY add-on's, ie, genuine Apple:

    • keyboards,
    • mice,
    • adapters,

    …not to mention:

    • Word,
    • Excel,

    …etc.

Apple's on the rise, except in mobiles,
where Android is winning (in N Amer).

Have you been convinced to run
    away from cost-effectiveness, eg,

    …to join other Apple-groupies,
    who regularly seem ready-to-camp-out
(waiting to be first groupie to buy
any soon-to-arrive, next gen'n Apple toy)?

    Then cost-effective netbooks won't please.

For the rest of us, with both work to do &
media to enjoy, I think netbooks are the GO,
without needing to empty our savings acc'ts.

    My 2.2 cents, only; YMMV.

  • Called up my local harvey norman to ask about this and was told that the 30% off excludes netbooks and items in the catalogue, and that this product does in fact cost $376. If you can get it for $264 then go for it, but don't be certain that's the price they'll give you.

    • Last time checked with the staff and they say the netbooks have 15% off instead of 30%

    • thanks for confirm. saves me the embarrassment of rocking up to HN store and demaning 30% off the netbook! lol

  • +1

Do these have a glossy screen or matte?

  • excludes catalogue item. good luck getting them to take 30% off that. now i have the HN song in my head

    • Go Harvey Norman, GO!!!

  • same here, didn't allow 30% on netbooks. offered a toshiba c660 for $349 - $50 amex = $299. Not bad, the amd cpu is twice as fast as the hp's atom

    • scratch that, the c660 had a terrible cpu.
i did end up getting a HP G6 for $383 so their ploy worked, thanks Mat_Lab either way. Never realised I'd have yet another laptop when i woke up today :P

  • +1

Confirmed, would have been good but a no go with my local store in Brissy. Called up and it was $376 and he told me the sale did not include netbooks.

    • +2

The sale does not include netbooks. Price still $376 which is NOT a bargain!

    • +1

Same here, went to the actual store in Rothwell and they said that the sale excluded catalogued items (did not really asked why or anything as he was a bit cranky for the start).

Ended buying a 15" for nearly 400 (was not on special either) but happy with the purchase anyway.

      K.

    • was also told that the sale applies to laptops and excludes netbooks

  • Op said he already bought one with that price. We still can go to ow do price match if op can upload the receipt.

  • Butthe OP said he bought one with 30% off????!?!?!?
    Scanned receipt please.. Thx

  • Which store did you guy buy it from? Auburn store does not accept 30^% for netbook

  • +1

ive never price matched with a receipt before…how do you do it?

    • +1

      Duh!

Just print out the receipt, & show it to OW staffer

IF they dedcide NOT to confirm that HN has stock,
      they'll match price & deduct a further 5%.

Others computed that you'd then be paying ~ $250.

For any of you who went out, on the basis of this
OzBargain listing, & (after hearing there was NO
30% discount on this fine netbook) bought some-
      thing else…

I say: Maybe that's why HN -excludes- netbooks…
it's yet another way to "get 'em in the store"
with a less than 100% helpful advertising ploy.

I also say: DON'T buy something else… 'cause
it just ENCOURAGES this kind of practice.

I think the BEST tactic is: MAKE A NOISY EXIT,
eg, let 'em know that you think they've done
something that "none of the stores I [you] buy
from would do" (Let nearby customers hear it.)

(OfficeWorks was quite happy to price-match, when
I rang them, but - with no receipt in hand -
had to tell me SORRY, HN won't take 30% off,
      som neither can we.)

      • so how do u negotiate it? maybe it was a damaged model and was reduced or sumthing. how do u convince officeworks it was reduced because of an advertised sale price?

  • Mat_lab, can you please post the receipt? I had 3 HNs say no dice on 30% Ffor netbooks. Thx.

  • +1

It's dodgy how netbooks are not part of the 30% off!

I'm tempted with this one http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256976892394/compaq-…

With 30% off its ~$275, wonder if they'll do 30% off though.

    • hey thats decent if you only want it for basic tasks!!!!

      • is it a current catalogue item tho? cos then it would be excluded… im going down tomorrow to check it out. much prefer this to a netbook especially at the same price.

  • +2

    G'day

I bought two and originally went in after two of the ASUS. They had no stock at the Taren Point Store and so he offered me some others. I was actually pushing for 30% off the ASUS $249 price but they would not.

The receipt is at my place, I will not be heading back there today. I will take a photo and upload when I go back tomorrow. I was rather disgusted with the receipt because it does not say what I bought on the receipt, only the total. (Never seen this before)

The salesman went to great lengths to show me how much they were losing in the sale. I didn't believe him, perhaps now I do?

I can upload a quick pic I took of one of the specifications stickers, that was on the side of the box.
    (( How? ))

This is really annoying me that you cannot all get this deal. This is really not good enough Hardly Normal!!!

    Re the 30% off.
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/page/1256977076154/the-ultima…

It says Desktops and Laptops (except Apple, Sony Vio and current catalog items), doesn't exclude or include Netbooks. Dodgy Hardly Normal I say, Dodgy !!!

You have the right to get a receipt that states what you bought & what you paid for it, &

…now that all these people "bumped their heads" at HN's, ie, - after your "deal" listing "got 'em excited" -

…I, for one, think you should do the right thing, namely:

      1. get an informative receipt from HN,
showing this HP netbook, and the price you say you paid; &

      2. publish that receipt, to help them get it (or a similar deal at OW) at that price.

Thanks, in advance, for looking after your mates at OzBargain.

  • -3

MODERATOR(S), kindly remove or retitle this "deal" as a "dud" thanks.

Let's not send more trusting people to HN's for a non-existing deal.

    • +1

I'm guessing those trusting people are smart enough to read previous comments regarding this deal. Lets not try too hard IVI

    • +3

IVI - If you feel this way, use the REPORT button - it's there for a reason.

  • +3

The poster being a HN rep is as likely as IVI being a jbhifi plant that was put there years ago, and has not posted any jbhifi deals as to not arouse suspicion.

Either way IVI you are a plant of somekind.

  • Why can't just go and get Asus Eee PC Seashell 1015PEM
    rather than price matching etc…?

There are plenty of stocks @ Campbelltown,NSW

    • That's a good deal yes, but this deal is worth paying the few extra $$ for the improvement in specs.

  • I got this deal at Yarraville Officeworks.

    • which store did you price match it against? Did they call HN to confirm?

      • +1

I am actually located in Brisbane and it's actually for my parents who bought it and also collected it. I called Officeworks and told the rep I spoke to that I was just organising it over the phone for my parent's convenience. I told the rep to Google Harvey Norman and tax time sale which is the sale they have on now and he said it was fine!

  • +1

    I have the receipt.

How do I post it up for you all to use?

(Off to bed now will check this when I wake up & post as instructed)
Sorry to have caused so much frustration for everyone, really thought I had found a good deal for everyone.

    • Excellent. Please take a clear scan or photo of the receipt and either:
      1. Upload it to http://upload.ozbargain.com/ which will give you a URL where the image is stored. Then edit the URL field in your description above to reflect the URL of the uploaded receipt, OR
      2. Upload it to any number of free image hosting sites out there eg tinypic, imageshack, photobucket and simply post the url of the receipt here in the comments.
      Thanks!

      • Original Post now updated and URL to receipt added.

NB. If you have a successful plan, please share.

  • the 30% off ended yesterday….how can we use the receipt now? just hope that officeworks doesnt call up to check??

    • I had no idea the 30% had ended, thought it was an End Of Financial Year Promotion (?).

  • Thanks Op. I bought one just now at jbhifi@dfo Melbourne. They rang up hn and been told was that price. So they sold to me for $263 (20c cheaper. Lol)

    • would you be able to scan the receipt? the one uploaded is for 2 units at $279.30 each

  • no dice at officeworks, the HN 30% off deal is over :(
