The Good Guys Home Services: Good or Bad Value?

Hi,

I've used The Good Guys Home Services twice now and both times I've been a bit disappointed. I'm wondering whether it is decent value, or whether I'd be better off just going through a site like HiPages.

My thinking is: I feel like Home Services could be better value, in that contractors offer cheaper prices because they get more work volume through The Good Guys that way. When I have got comparison quotes they've often been in the ballpark of the Good Guys Home Services quote. On the other hand, I feel like it would also make sense for them to make some extra money through this, assuming that people will pay more for convenience, a form of upselling.

What do you think? Is the Home Services cheaper and or more convenient, or are you better off just finding someone yourself?

No happy ending for op then…

  • Why do they offer home services when they want you to come in and see the good good good guys?

It's never going to be good value because they're basically helping you arrange the actual tradesman, whether it be a electrician or plumber, so they're charging for that aspect whereas if you arrange one directly you skip out on TGG as the middleman.

    • It could be good value in some instances. Like if they get a discounted rate due to their size, or if its partially subsidized in some way.

Most of the time though, no. Simpler to handle it yourself

  • Not in Australia.

Our market works on a "quote" basis. Part of the quoting process is wallet diagnosis. When there's no indicative price, there's no comparison. No comparison = no competition.

Finally, there's no cost efficiency if there's no competition.

  • Any tradie that works for the likes of the good guys is likely to be earning less for the security of working for a big company.. they pay less and so end up with tradies that can’t work for themselves or are nearin retirement. They also work on volume which means the jobs need to be done quicker and therefore typically less quality. Flipside of that is that theee is a big company to chase to rectify problems
