  • I prefer black.

    review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxkr/page11.asp

    How does this one compare with the older K200D? What I like about the K200D is that it's got a top LCD but no live view.

    • +1

      This sensor is better at high ISO
      Also the 6 FPS and 1/6000 second shutter speed are top of the class, other brands' basic dslrs only do 4 FPS and 1/4000s.

    • nice =D

  • K-r has problems focusing in tungsten light. Not sure if firmware v1.10 has fully fixed the problem.

    • http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/k-r_s.html

      That's where the firmware is. Don't think it has a fix for that… :) My sister got the pink one a few months back and is in love with it.

      Edit2: Found it cheaper, but the site itself gets a poor review for customer service so I took it down

      • DWI is a grey market import though. No local warranty with that one. Something to keep in mind for those who don't want to deal with the hassle of non-local warranty.

        • I haven't dealt with DWI so I can't speak for them, but it bears repeating that no local first party warranty is not the same as no local warranty at all. Discount Digital Photographics (DDP) are another grey importer who provide a store warranty that generally matches the manufacturer's warranty - instead of sending (for instance) a busted body to Nikon for repair, you take it back to the shop for a swap.

    • Most cameras that use phase detect autofocus (common on SLRs esp) have some minor trouble with front focusing under tungsten light but it is not a problem you will normally notice unless you zoom right in on the images and it is normally only a matter of millimetres - if you experience the problem with the K-r you can always switch to contrast detect autofocus to basically eliminate the problem ;)
      I have one, as do two friends, and none of us have noticed any major issues with tungsten lighting…
      I would have to say that for the price it is hard to beat the features and options available on this camera and it produces really nice pictures :)

    • Have the K7 never had that.

      • The K-x also didnt have Tungsten Front focusing problems, and was a much better deal at 449/499 from Officeworks.

        • +1

          Have you actually compared them side-by-side and found the K-x to be better?

          I have both models at my disposal, and in my opinion, and that of others who have also used them and viewed the images, the K-r is SIGNIFICANTLY better at focusing both in terms of speed AND accuracy - even under tungsten lighting…

          The K-x doesn't include focus points in the viewfinder either which makes it quite difficult to judge the actual focus point when using the viewfinder.

          Additionally if you look in the K-r camera menu, "Option Number 21" activates "AF Fine Adjustment", which allows you to adjust for the front focus. Or, as per my above post, you can make use of contrast detect which eliminates the front focus problem.

          As I mentioned before, front focusing under tungsten lighting is not unique to the K-r, it is often related to phase detect autofocus;

          The PENTAX K-x has issues;

          http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1036&me…

          CANON cameras experience the problem;
          Eg; Canon EOS 7D / 60D - 10D - Front Focus under Tungsten

          And NIKON cameras experience the problem;

        @ furyou

        It happens on the K-7 too…
        If you look at "Menu Screen 6" - "Option 37" - you will find "AF Adjustment" - it is not there for fun - front (and back) focus problems are a known issue on SLRs and this allows you to deal with it :)
        http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/69…

        But as I say, the effect is quite minor, and most people don't notice it until it is pointed out to them and they start obsessing over it ;)

        The K-7 model I use actually displays back focus more often that front focus !

        There are lots of issues that exist with SLRs - another common one is "dead" or "bright" pixels that will develop over time - they become particularly noticeable in the dark areas of night shots- I pointed it out to a friend who owns a nikon and he sent the camera away to get it "serviced" for a rather hefty fee - at least with the Pentax you can map out the bright pixels in a few seconds with a menu option that is totally FREE and doesn't involve you losing your camera for a few weeks while it gets serviced ;)

    I like the non-black color. =) I wish they made blue SLRs. XD

    Last time on here it was $449 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/40209

      that was the k-x

    • DIFFERENT Product ozpanda - that is the previous generation.

    • +1

      k-r being under $500? absurd!
      thus it was k-x

      k-r is much better than k-x

      • -2

        K-x is much better.

        • they are both good.

  • How does it compare with the Nikon D3100?

      • +1

        Be wary of their scoring, popularity and video attract bulk points…

      • I have difficulty understanding that comparison - the K-r seems to have more "Reason to consider" in it's favour that are actually related to photography (rather than video) and yet it scores lower???

        Eg: Much higher ISO
        Better dynamic range/ colours
        Faster shutter speed
        Better image quality
        Quicker burst shot speed
        etc

        Are they testing it's suitability as an SLR camera or as video camera… LOL

        • In fairness, bottom-end SLR owners are far more likely to care about video. For a while the best sub-pro video camera on the market was actually the Nikon D90.

        • I would agree that many buyers (including "bottom-end") might be interested in the video capabilities of the SLR they purchase, so the feature comparison is relevant, but surely most people care MORE about the ability of an SLR to take photos?

          In fairness, The Nikon was the first SLR with so called HD-Video (beating Canon to market by a few weeks) but it was NOT "the best sub-pro video camera on the market" by any stretch of the imagination;
          The Nikon D90 only offered more basic 1280x720 HD video and not the Full 1920x1080 HD that some video cameras offered even prior to it's release. The Nikon D90 also lacked some very basic features that even the really low end video cameras of the time offered such as continuous auto-focus (while recording video). Most sub-pro video cameras also offered things like control over the camera's shutter speed and/or aperture when in video mode and the Nikon, once again, did not. Indeed the only "control" the D90 offered in video mode was via the exposure compensation dial. It also lacked stereo sound, another common feature at the time. Finally the Nikon D90 also suffered from the so-called "Jello-cam" or rolling shutter / wobbling effect, certainly something even budget video cameras of the time did not generally display !!!
          The Nikon D90 WAS the first "HD" SLR to reach the market and it was (and still is) a GREAT SLR, but it was NOT a patch on the better consumer video cameras of the time when it came to video :)

      as a starting point you'll get more 'value' with Kr.
      But if you want to get serious in future you may want to go with the Nikon system.

      • Depends on what you mean by "serious" - Pentax offer a great range of good quality primes at very attractive prices :)

      • +1

        You can be plenty serious with the Pentax system.

    • Worse ISO
      More dynamic range
      More colour depth
      Great fps
      Worse video
      In body VR (both good and bad)
      More cross autofocus points but it still seemed worse and slower when I compared them

      Overall, go with the Nikon if you have friends or like shooting with them. The lenses, support and future paths outweigh the extra cost right now.

    • I myself have no experience with this merchant, but they do have a D5000 for similar price. If anyone wants to compare..

      http://www.imagingworld.com.au/camera/slr/nikon/nikon-d5000/…

      Shopbot/Myshopping also shows prices for D5000 around the 600-800 range. I suspect they may be grey imports though with only store warranties.

  • white is nice

  • good price for an entry level camera.
