  • In my opinion http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/48029 is far better as its USB 3.0
a 1.5TB pocket drive will be used to store large files obviously, so the Speed at which files are also to transfer is rather important. So although its 500gb smaller, its most likely at least 2 times faster, But in the end it all depends on the customer's patience. My patience is pretty limited as I'm used to SSD speeds

    • yeah i agree.

if u factor in the shipping costs with the usb3 one, this works out cheaper by just a bit. but yeah if u can pick up the usb3 one it's a better deal for a better product.

oh well i thought i'd post it anyway

      • Still good job on finding it :P. wonder if your can rip the HDD out of this one.

        • lol only cos i get zazz emails

not sure.. but hmm i just read that the interface is upgradeable to usb3 :S

i'll edit the description to add it

        • Yep you can, which makes it even a better deal :D.

Unfortunately the form factor is a 2.5" drive with a 12mm height which means most laptops won't be able to support it (apart from some models e.g. HP DV6 (2010/2011) and other notebooks that are on the market with an inbuilt 1TB drive.

but my computer doesn't have USB 3.0 ports, none of my devices do.
I don't think most people would aswell.

        Cool story bro.

    • I have many USB 3.0 Drives and a few USB 2.0 drives.. Speed in transferring files are very similar on either drives so USB 2.0 is fine!

Files were moved with an i7 2600, 8GB DDR3, Corsair SSD-F120 and the USB3.0 drives still slowed down to around 28MBps after a few minutes

Puts it inline with USB 2.0 speeds. If you want REAL USB 3.0 speeds you would need a 3.5" 7200RPM Harddrive

(befor you ask.. yes i was using the USB3.0 ports lol)

      • What USB 3.0 controller do you have? That sounds uncharacteristically slow… most of my USB 2.0 drives consistnetly transfer at 35mb/s on USB 2.0.

      • You machine seems to have a problem. You should sort that out, because there's something wrong. The processor, RAM, etc are all irrelevant at these (non-SSD) transfer speeds.

Look at this typical benchmark, these typically run for 5 mins or so…

        http://plugable.com/2011/06/14/benchmarking-usb-2-0-vs-3-0-s…

        USB 2.0 = 30-40 MB/sec -VS- USB 3.0 = 80-100 MB/sec

Of course, lots of SMALL files will choke either. But irrespective of filesize, with a decent controller you should be getting at least double the speed from USB 3.0, typically triple.

On your system, that 28 MB/sec is not good - so you better give me all your USB 3.0's and I'll give you back some of my USB 2.0's :-D

        • I have a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD5 B3 P67
One of the top of the range boards.. nothings wrong with my computer my last pc used to move files the same.. from Samsung, Seagate, WD 2.5" hard drives…

This is my experience no matter what.
I get 59mbps bursts for 4-5 minutes but shortly after they slow down to 29mbps on eaither usb 3.0 or 2.0

May have something to do with the fact i'm moving over 800GB in one go but meh.. not much point in USB3.0 if the small drives are too slow.

using usb3.0 docking station on a 7200rpm 3.5" samsung spinpoint drive i get 80mbps almost the whole transfer on the same system

Most USB3.0 flash drives are still slow, 'cause the flash memory/chips are slow. But any USB3.0 HDD is going to be 70+MB/s since the drives themselves are 70+MB/s.

  • I saw this deal just after picking up the 1TB WD from Officeworks for $95 after pricematching. Now if only I could jusify getting another drive.

  • Just ordered myself two of these :) awesome deal!!

  • keep in mind there is a fair fee to upgrade this drive to USB 3.0, you need another attachment, which isn't cheap from memory, but could have changed of course.

    Just do your research

  • anyone know where to get a good deal on the USB 3.0 adaptor?

  • Is this sata internally or soldered-on usb3 or something strange?

If it has an external adaptor I presume its sata otherwise even usb3 would bottleneck it….. but can anyone confirm?

  • +2

The internal drive is 15mm, not 12mm

    • +1

      Blast it.

Theyve got the technology to fix this now. I thought they had.

Im just after less platters for more reliability.

Guys is it worth to buy this drive?.. its sole purpose is for backup…

    • +1

it can do FireWire800 as well - iirc Firewire was designed for sustained video transport continuity

  • I just bought the same drive at 1tb for $99 at bestbuys in NYC

    • Yes this is 1.5TB though.. not the same thing
