    • i own a bmw ….it’s a pleasure to drive, and parts aren’t more expensive than other imported cars, i would buy one gain or a mercedes if the finances are there again. when i buy another car.

people pay this much for some giant 4wd they use around the city, takes longer distance to stop, and uses more fuel.

      • +4

BS.. Parts are WAY more expensive. Key replacement? $700. Puncture in tire? $800 per wheel. During the time I owned one, parts were 3x more expensive compared to my other non-european cars. The only "winning" part is time between service intervals and I do agree that they are built better/driving more enjoyable.

        • +1

Don't lose your key? Don't buy tires from the dealer? I've had my BMW for 4.5 years and spent about $200 on service, everything else has been covered under warranty/service plan. I went to JAX to replace the tyres.

I agree as they get older and the car is out of warranty that's when the costs can hurt, so I will probably change the car in the next 12 months.

      • +1

Lol, the parts are far more expensive than Japanese equivalents

      • Compare a $80k European car to your $20k jap car and sure the European car will feel better but and better to drive… Compare apples to apples, it's like those people who jump from their Woolworth/Coles $60 android phone to a $1600 iPhone and say wow iPhone feels so much better… Compare that iPhone with phones in its league, same theory with cars.

Just a note that the facelift BMW 5 series is just around the corner.

    • +1

      facelift BMW 5 series

How often do people stare at their own cars? I think the last time I stared at my car was when I bought it.

      • +21

Looks like you bought the wrong car :(

"interested in euro luxury and wanting to save the environment"

When your'e plug in hybrid is being charged …..from the plug , doesn't it get juiced up from a power station burning the environmentalists enemy number 1 …..coal ?

    • +1

Solar arrays make electric vehicles very low cost to run, so solar parking lots have excellent potential. But yes, charging with coal plant electricity would negate some of the possible environmental benefits.

    • +5

A coal power station is already much more efficient than burning petrol / diesel, and any future improvements to the sustainability of the grid in time also effectively reduce your emissions as time goes on. CCS can also be relatively easily done to coal plants in the future, but basically impossible to retrofit every car on the road.

Not to mention coal doesn't have near the health impact of petrol / Diesel, the amount of PM 2.5 and other dangerous stuff released into the air is much much lower with coal.

    • +1

True, but its not hard go fix. I produce 10,000KWh+ at my house each year, its highly cost effective to do so too!

    • -1

People spending that much on a car will probably not be thinking of environmental pollution.

  • +2

    2018, 2019, 2020 model?

    • 2018

  • +16

    Bought 10 thanks OP

    don't forget cashback 😂

  • +6

Perfect car for a medical student who hasn't graduated yet!

    • +5

      Or a real estate agent.

    • This is too true

  • +7

Can't believe it. Just got used to driving my Coles trolley and they drop the price of the BMW. What to do. What to do? Does it have a cup holder like my trolley?

  • +1

    Let's ozbargain the dealer :)

  • +4

How many of the 11 could actually be bought at $79,888?

    I hate that 'from' word.

    • +1

It probably means all of them but if you want to add features then price goes up. The investment vehicles are probably still in factory.

      • That's the catch though, in BMW land most mundane features are an add on… Want a steering wheel? Have to purchase the handling package, want wheel? Have to buy the rolling on the road package.

  • +3

Is it true that BMW is similar to Ford, or Holden, in terms of their perceived value relative to their ubiquity in Germany; I.E; we have loads of Holdens, and Fords, in Australia, so it's kind of this joke that because they're a dime a dozen, they're not really worth a whole lot. (which I think is both true, and somewhat of a misnomer) Does the same thing apply to BMW, or Mercedes in Europe?

Not knocking the brand of BMW, I'm genuinely curious. I've never owned one, or really driven one. I've just always heard phrase, that BMW is like Ford and Holden (specifically in Germany) so over there, they're not worth a whole lot, but here they're somewhat exotic.

I'm not much of a 'car-person' either, so I'm not really versed in this sort of thing.

    • +2

I'd describe as semi true - it used to be the case more I suspect but now there are plenty of cheaper brands in germany.

However most taxis are still mercs and BMWs - thing is they get ultra 'povo' specs - ie cloth seats, hardly any electronics etc - as cheap as they can make them!

      • Thanks for the reply thackleberry :)

So, they use Merc's and BMW's for Taxis, presumably for the reliability, but swap out the trim to make them cheap as? Is that sort of similar to basic Commodores, and Falcons, versus more expensive Commodores like HSV or FPV sort of thing?

I know that Ford, and Holden taxis, though most of them now seem to be Camry's, but older taxis that were Ford and Holden would seem to just go forever, but they were basic as inside.

        • +2

its like when you see a ford falcon taxi, its a base model, not the fully optioned fpv version with all the bells and whistles.

        • There are plenty of Mercedes Taxis in Melbourne these days

    • +5

Mercedes and BMWs still have a better reputation in Germany than what the average person drives (Ford, Opel, VW, Renault, etc). Last time I was in Berlin I was surprised that most taxis were not Merc/BMW/etc. Most are now Prius. Times have changed.

      • It never even occurred to me that people in Germany would drive Fords, but it does make a lot of sense. Regardless of where people are, they'll buy cheaper models. How do Volkswagen fit in? They make cars like Taureg, which in the V12 are stupidly expensive, but also make like Golfs?

      • +1

they also have a cheaper price in Germany

    • +1

Blame it on government luxury car tax.

    • +1

bmw and merc are common in germany, and the parts are also cheap. the aussie dollar is making these cars expensive now, thank scomo who reckons the low aussie dollar is good for the economy ….. if you export coal or beef.

    • +1

My partner is originally from Europe and he says whenever he sees a white Mercedes, he associates them with taxi. I was going to get white but that comment stuck with me and I chose silver instead. Maybe I should’ve gone with a creamy color, like German taxis.

And yes, parts are more expensive in Australia; almost 2-3x.
And super expensive at MB Sydney than other MB dealerships. E.g., starter battery replacement 950 including labor vs 600 at other MB dealerships.

  • Any deals for X6 ?

    • You looking to buy one BA?
I own it very expensive to run 20-25l/100km.in city it is V8 400kw.
More of performance car than a family car
Look at X7 they are 7 seaters instead of 4 like x6

      • Yeah.. Looking for performance car especially SUVs

        • +1

Nice not a bad car but don't do too many ks.The resale drops like anything,I drive 50k -70k a year so not my main drive

They are simply the beasts, as they say don't judge book by it's cover.

          • +1

@777: Yeah.. I usually drive around 20K/year so should do for me.
Will pull a trigger on this beast when time comes :-)

            • @Being Askhole: Nice and good luck. I am sure you will find a good deal with your bargain hunting skills

  • +1

LOL. Save the environment by consuming more out of it.

    • +1

The only thing that's easier to do than hit the donation button to appease an ethical concern is to buy something nice that gives a promise of doing something on your behalf.

      • +1

Haha, indeed. I do love me a good car that would get fast around a bend on the twisties. However, I won't buy one under the pretext of contributing towards saving the environment. That would be living in outright denial, or being arrantly naïve.

        • +1

Buying a car to save the natural environment is like when the RSPCA throws fundraising BBQs to save the animals.

  • -1

If I hadnt just bought an Audi this might have been interesting.

  • +2

Drive away pricing is 121K in NSW.

  • +1

    Nice car, good deal imo

  • +1

Shame it's not in Victoria… Not that I would've bought it.

  • +1

I’m going to buy one that’s a month old but advertised as new with a scratch on it and start a new thread on here.

  • Can you fill it up with coal?

    • +3

yes but then you can't drive away..

      • +1

What on earth are you doing with the coal? I carry all mine strictly in the boot, kids carseats and bit in the glovebox. More in passenger seat when wife stays home because it's coal day and there simply isn't the space for her. Where do I get it all from? Duh. Coles of course.

  • Good deal, bought one, thanks OP.

I think the RRP is 100k+?

    • +1

      2019 120k, 2018 81k that's a bit steep lol

  • +1

    Too expensive.

  • No Free Delivery ?

  • +18

What advantages does this motorcar have over, say, a train, which I could also afford?

    • +3

Can tell all your friends you got it from ozbargain

    • +1

Has speed holes that make the car go faster

    • Well, you'll notice the heated gas pedal gently warms your feet…

    • Well this will go 300 hectares on a single tank of Kerosene

    • Don't get me started on public transport…
Edit: Oh, it's a joke about not being able to afford it.

    • So are you against all motor vehicles or just luxury ones?

  • Plugging in is the way to go ACDC was on to it.

  • +7

How many Eneloops does this take?

  • +6

I'm waiting for the Ebay's 20% discount code before pulling the trigger on this.

    • +3

Even then it's not worth it lol

    • They always exclude autos :(

  • Buy one get one free?

  • Amazon to pricematch ?

    • +1

      No, Officeworks should do it.

      • +1

OW beats it by extra 5%.

  • +3

Is this a good car for investment bankers?

  • +1

How is this a 'bargain'? sounds RRP.

    • The bargain comes into it when they throw in $50 Scotchgard for free !!!

      • Is that before or after my missus throws up in it?

        • +1

Maybe don't buy it on a Friday afternoon ;)

  • +4

    Does it come with indicators?

    • It comes with 4, including up and down

    • Optional extra

    • +1

Not required in a BMW, they never get used.

  • +2

Does this come with the Aussie adapter?

  • Does cashrewards give cashback?

  • I don't even earn that much in a year but can I have a test drive for instagram?

  • I never thought I would see this in Ozbargain

  • +1

Is JV here to ask the usual price?

  • had a bmw once, never again unless m3/m4

  • +1

This would make a high yield investment

  • Thanks. Bought 3. My whole village said thank you.

    • +6

Are you from India? Careful, some ungrateful sod might drive it into the lake because he's expecting a Jaguar as a present instead of a BMW.

      • Oh dear, I would have to return them for full refund. My whole village thanked you too.
