great deal for a decent fridge!

  • Great fridge, had mine for just over a year now.

  • I got this fridge 4 years ago for $1222. Really good fridge for the price!

  • +2

stay away from LG and samsung fridges, the compressors fail more then other brands. just tired of doing replacements of these fridges ontop of the installations everyday

    • +2

which brands are most reliable? Are you in service/repair? How old are the fridges which are failing?

      • +1

if its a simple repair we do them on site if not then we take them back to get sent our to their own brand specific technicians, sparky by trade and started doing this, i would say most brands are close on reliability in the 700-1500 range , avoid any high end fancy fridges with touch screens, see through doors, multiple sensors etc. they are just gimmicky and just another thing to go wrong, go for the best priced with the longest factory warranty/store warranty and avoid miele, LG , samsung. id say westinghouse model with the least amount of bells and whistles are the best, ive got a 18 year old westinghouse fridge that outlived all other fridges our family has had. replaced the seals once and still purrs nicely. ill keep it till it dies and parts are non existant.

        • Are Westinghouse/Electrolux/Simpson the same in term on quality of the parts used?

          • +24

@O O: electrolux is AEG midrange models, i have not worked with simpson before but electrolux is similar to AEG and i have seen AEG's base model ovens for example are much more reliable then their high end AEG stuff, in terms of fridges i would say westinghouse is better value for money in fridge in their base models compared to electrolux.

ovens = AEG/miele base range model. with the simple dials 2 knob are good. avoid steamers they are always getting replaced. and dont get pyro ovens, the coatings are easily broken or ive seen cheap pyro ovens blow their glass doors.

fridge = westinghouse base range. less is more in this sort of stuff. to many fancy things and they just aren't worth it.

cooktops = dont waste your money on expensive induction cooktops. either go to gas or be prepared to try your luck in the appliance lottery. and definately avoid miele high end and F&P. the most replaced cooktops ive done.

washing machines = Speedqueen is aces from what the other guys who install them say. if u can afford it get it.

range hoods= they are just 2 or 3 fans with a little bit of metal and duct. nothing special and not worth the huge dollars they can sell for. get what looks good and has the least amount of moving parts, e.g sliders

i hope this helps you guys out in choosing. and 95% of salesmen in the stores don't know anything about these things. they don't care let alone know what they are talking about

            • @markdownhunter: Interesting. Thanks for the inside knowledge about appliance quality. How do you rate washing machines, front loaders? Bosch, Samsung, LG or F&P?

              • @[Deactivated]: Unfortunately I haven't done allot with washing machines, I at least know top loaders in general are more reliable them front loaders, I did more stuff on the work that needed a electrician

              • +2

@[Deactivated]: Just replaced my 10kg Samsung washing machine (front loader) with a Bosch Series 6 after 6 years.
Let me start with this: In the last 6 years, I had to get the motherboard replaced. Twice. The first time was covered by manufacturers warranty. The second time was covered by extended warranty we purchased as an add-on option.
Last month, the same motherboard has failed. Again. The same part has failed THREE TIMES in six years. We asked Samsung if they'll cover this under "good faith" but they refused because the depreciation value of the machine is now $0.
I'm going to agree with Alex01 and avoid Samsung whitegoods. Samsung whitegoods have half the life of other brands.
If you have get a Samsung, then make sure you have extended warranty.

                • @sanmigueelbeer: Sorry to hear that, but that's sh*ty quality control from Samsung.

            • @markdownhunter: thanks for your input. We're looking at two Westinghouse fridges, just trying to find stock. Cheers

            • @markdownhunter: Any advice on picking a microwave? Much apprecated!

            • @markdownhunter: Wow…thanks for your detailed advice. Didn't know fridges can be that unreliable. My parents have one that's even older than me. Then I myself bought a Westinghouse 9 years ago, still going strong and no issues ever. I thought that was normal, fridge should last 10-20 years at least.

Was thinking to upgrade as sometimes I feel it's a bit too small but looks like I'd better keep it for now.

            • @markdownhunter: I've had a samsung fridge since 2014. No issues ever. It has a panel at the front for just getting your milk and not opening the door. It also has water and ice.

I have a smeg pyro and the glass on the inside MUST be spotless before you run the cycle. ALSO, the old habit of pushing the tray in with the door? This can also damage the glass and cause them to blow. It happened to me once after purchase and never again. I make sure the glass is clean and never use the door to push stuff into the oven. Hard habit to break.

      • If you want to pay up the rear then Mitsubishi

    • Well to buck the trend, I've had my LG fridge for over 25 years. It has been moved interstate and locally a few times and still works as well as the first day I got it. The model is a Fresh Master No Frost GR-282MF

Be careful labelling a brand as unsuitable due to a few model failures. Too many variable to consider what could be causing the problems. But in saying that it's good to hear the experience from a tech that works in the industry albeit a bit light on details (models, years of manufacture, usage, …)

      • +6

Anything made 15+ years ago was more reliable then anything out now. That's why you'll see the old kelvinators from 40+ years ago chugging along

        • +1

That's true. My 5.5kg Hoover top loader I bought more than 15 years ago is still going strong.

          • @[Deactivated]: We were sad to let ours go when there was nothign wrong with it. Even second hand it got picked up for $200 so must've been worth something.

Have to say the new one (different brand) isn't much better!

        • old fridges use heaps more power

    • What are your thoughts on Mitsubishi fridges? Looking for a fridge with a $1000 budget, 400-500 litres.

      • +2

Haven't worked with Mitsubishi food fridges but their air-conditioning compressors are good and so are their industrial fridge/freezer. If that's anything to go by

    • +1

It's because of volume. You repair/replace more of them because more people buy them.

      • On the average day 8 out of the 10 installs I do are the base range models, so volume is not the answer. When sales come through then it might be more of the higher end models that get installed but thats only twice a year at EOFY or boxing Day sales. 2 weeks out of 52 a year might be more high end appliances getting installed . It hasn't changed much in the last 12 years I've been doing this

  • Great fridge! Very quiet and cheap to run. Stainless finish is good, easy to wipe fingerprints off. I’ve had mine nearly 3 years and have recommended it to many people. Got mine for around this price back in the days of Samsung cash back.

  • I've had terrible experience with Samsung French Door fridge. The repairs were done under warranty and the same issue (water collecting in fruit/veg baskets) started again a month after warranty ran out.

  • Great find! I was hoping I got Samsung but there were no promo in jul so went for Beko 450L instead. Similar spec, bottom freezer.

  • +4

Nice one! Been looking for a fridge and was looking for the LG GB-455-PL that's 4.5 stars but at this price it looks too good.

Use code spring2019 for extra $20 off + cashrewards.

  • Bought one. Thanks OP

Our old F&P E422b bottom mount is on its last legs. We bought it used about 5y ago and since then I have had to replace the freezer fan twice (2x $15), and more recently the defrost heater element.

The heater element failed and the evaporator turned into a solid chunk of ice, which broke off its mountings and generally screwed up the whole freezer section.

I managed to cobble it back together with a new heater ($30), and it works fine again but I told the wife I would buy a new one when a good deal shows up.

  • Thanks OP. Was going to buy this last weekend at Goodguys for $946 plus delivery but luckily held off and just bought through this deal. Great price - have one of this fridge already and it's great

  • Bought the black one in last December during TGG boxing day sale for around $800 for pick up. The SS finish one was around $100 more that time. Good fridge for 1-3 people. Quite and very economical to run.

  • How about comparing with the Haier 555L Side by Side Fridge? $89 higher but you get 97L more capacity and a Side-By-Side !
    https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/haier-hsbs555aw-…

  • I have bottom mount and I can say Top mount freezer is better. Bottoms mount freezer gets all the food/scraps/crud from the normal fridge k collecting on the seals of the bottom mount freezer.

Bought it from ebay with the same seller, using 15% off ebay plus coupon then the price down to $670.65.

    • Do you have the eBay link for this? I can't seem to find it on their eBay store.

      • It looks they’re sold out on eBay atm. Hopefully seller will restock it.

        • care to share the link? I assume you can view it in your ebay summary?

    • What is an Ebay plus coupon?

      • The code is PEACHY15 that 15% off eligible items

        • The fridge is back in stock on their Ebay site but it does not show 15% off

  • I just bought one yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

  • It does not surprise me that there are OzBargainers tracking price history as closely as we do :)

I had a look and can confirm that this is the cheapest price we have sold it at.

Please note that the pricing at Appliances Online for almost every product is managed by a machine learning algorithm which updates daily.
This doesn't mean the price of this SRL458ELS will change tomorrow, only that the price may change.

  • Apparently the fridge has been discontinued and they won't be able to fulfil my order…

    • Phone call to the ACCC, misleading advertising.

    • +1

      Hi Steve,

Please DM me as it's not discontinued and we can fulfil your order - if you spoke to one of our customer support over the phone or livechat and they told you it was discontinued, that's a miscommunication.

It's true we are currently out of stock, but we can still get you this fridge at the $789 price, it just won't be ready to deliver until our next order comes in from Samsung.
