Do you ever need more than 60Hz on a 15 inch screen for casual gaming?

Deciding between Razer Blade 15 1060 Basic and Alienware m15.

Plan to bring it to uni for uni work, gaming is secondary as i already have a gaming setup.

I am in favour of m15 but for a little more GS65 can be had but i don't dig the design particularly and the keyboard on m15 seems to be better.

What do you guys reckon?

  • Need? No. Will enjoy and notice greatly? Probably.

But if you have a desktop for gaming already, focus on the main usecase for the laptop.

  • No you don't need it but it helps regardless of skill or interest level.

With high fps + hertz you see the next frame faster, which means faster reaction times, and you have higher temporal resolution which makes precise movements easier. The first part matters for competitive multiplayer games and the second thing matters for driving or sports games.

I'd get the 60 fps and use home setup for gaming.

  • I don't ever need more than 60hz for gaming on my laptop. I thought getting the 120hz upgrade for it was just wasting money.

  • You don't need it, but it makes everything look nicer. I upgraded to a 144hz monitor, and even browsing Windows and moving the cursor is so buttery smooth that I would never go back. Add G-sync for gaming and it looks sublime.

I was sceptical about 120 Hz screens on smartphones.

Until I tried one. Can't go back now. I guess if this is true for ~6 inch screens, ~15 inch will be more noticeable.

Nobody ever needs more than 60hz for casual (or even regular) gaming regardless of platform or screen size.

Nobody needs more than 60Hz, but as someone who's used a high refresh for years, every time I use my 60hz laptop I want to vomit

    • for gaming you mean?

no even for general desktop use

        • how so? seems exagerrated to me. i'm using 144Hz MSI gaming screen, going back to my 60Hz MacBook Pro i don't notice any difference.

@dukeGR4: If you're not noticing a difference your MSI screen isn't set up properly, make sure you go into your settings and check to see if your actually running at 144hz

            • @cille745: yep it's actually running at 144Hz i just checked

Same, I game 120hz on my 65", 60hz sucks. Console players at 30hz LOL

My opinion, Ill take 4k display over 144hz anyways, the high pixel density provides better viewing and that the 60hz isn't as bad as people say it is, less screen tearing. As for 144hz 1080P ill say only take the higher refresh if you need it for competitive games like cs:go other than that the advantages aren't really major. Plus the lower refresh rate will provide better battery life.

    • Depends on use case. Media consumption - 4K > 144Hz. Gaming, especially MOBAs or shooters, 144Hz > 4K, especially since it'd be hard for most graphics cards to even push 4K res at high fps.

      • Don’t have to play in 4K res, since 1080P looks good in 4K due to the pixel scale being perfect on games

        • Yeah, but 1080p games also scale perfectly to 1080p monitors. More seriously though, 1080p or even 1440p monitors with 120Hz or 144Hz refresh rates are getting more common.

4K monitors with 120Hz or 144Hz exist, but cost a billion dollars still. I think 1440p @ 144Hz might be the current sweet spot.

Unless you have hardware that can push out 100+FPS for gaming, get a 60hz

    • tbh I'd get it even for the desktop experience

Except IPS panels are only in 60hz monitors

        • no theres tonnes of IPS high hz monitors, I'm looking at one right now

    • Exactly.
Stuff like this is not a one-off trade. You need the hardware to drive it, and with that comes extra cost, weight, and a decreased battery life.
