I wish I didn't find this game so hard.

I wanted to see the 2nd half of the game

Can’t you just turn down the difficulty?

      • +6

Even at low difficulty it's not an easy game, especially early on. The game does eventually get easier as you go but it can take a while to get there. I'd say the games closer to a survival horror game than an action FPS but which likely throws many people and early on especially running in guns blazing can set you up for failure.

        • +7

It's neither survival horror nor action FPS, there's just a smattering of influence from both.

It's a Sci-Fi themed RPG like Deus Ex with a very similiar upgrade mechanic in form of Neuromods which function identically to augmentations (or BioShock's Plasmids) and a very familiar skill tree divided into three basic class pathways (Combat, Stealth or Hacking/Psionic).

It's also nowhere near as challenging as you're making it out to be. If you've played System Shock 2, BioShock, Deus Ex, Dishonored, Watch Dogs or any other modern RPG/FPS hybrid, then you'll be fine as the formula is very derivative. If you want the hard version of this style of gameplay try the first Deus Ex on 'Realistic' difficulty.

The second half of Prey though is really where the game comes into its own and where the storyline delivers some surprising revelations. I never did finish it to 100% completion nor replay it, and I skipped the Typhon upgrades altogether in order to get the "good" ending but it is definitely a thinking man's game with a lot of surprises and unique game play, especially the zero gravity combat. The level design and soundtrack (by Mick Gordon of Doom fame) are also superb.

          • @Gnostikos: There's a good ending? I'll have to get on YouTube. I did finish it having used the Typhon upgrades.

            • @Cleremy: The ending doesn't really change. Just the dialog in that little scene at the end.

To be honest, I found that a little disappointing, but they were obviously trying to set up for a sequel (which unfortunately there are no plans for AFAIK).

@Gnostikos: It's not an impossible game by any means, I completed it, but it's also not a super easy game to start with and if you approach it as a standard FPS you'll likely get it handed to you early on until you've upgraded weapons, have a source of ammunition etc. I can't comment on most of those other games especially but Bioshock at least had a lot more room for run and gun tactics throughout the entirity of the game where Prey early on forces you into more deliberate encounters. As the game progresses you get a bit more freedom to charge in head first.

Maybe the fact I didn't play System Shock or Deus Ex influenced the difficulty curve, but after I completed the game I did look up others take on it and there was a very common thread that many had found the game challenging, often because they expected a traditional FPS where this one required a lot more scavenging for supplies etc than many expected (which is where that 'survival' element I referred to comes in).

I will say by the last 1/3 the game got easy assuming you'd picked up power ups along the way. Unlike most games with a difficulty curve thats flat or slowly goes up, I think this title went the other way.

I do highly recommend the game and I do suggest sticking with it until the point that you open up a mechanism that allows more rapid travel around the ship, opening the game up more. You’ll know when you get there. From there things really opened up on my play through with a stack of new areas to explore while getting from A to B was easier, and my enjoyment levels subsequently went right up. The RPG elements also start to kick in and you get to improve abilities that support your playstyle.

    • I agreed. I put 4 hours into this game, put it down and haven't touched since. I hope to return someday, but somehow got burnt out in that short amount of time from pure frustration.

  • Watch out for the mimics. Also get mooncrash, very fun DLC

      Watch out for the mimics.

      Username checks out.

  • Is this seller legitimate?

    • Yep, they're fine.

    • Yes I bought quite a few games at CDkeys, they are legit.

    • +3

They are not an authorised reseller but a grey market reseller. It is uncertain where their keys come from. Which is why they are not listed at ITAD , for example, and are not allowed on Reddit.
While many people have had no problems with keys bought from CDKeys some (including myself) people have had issues and received invalid keys or the keys were revoked later on.
You buy at your own risk.
If you are interested, Reddit has a longer read on those key resellers.

So, if you mean by legitimate official seller, the answer is no.

If you mean, whether the shop is legal the answer is yes.

    • I bought Windows 10 pro key few years ago and it allows me to update automatically.

  • Totally forgot about this game

It's coming up as 4.49 euro for me which is a bit over $7AUD.
How'd you get the $5 price?

    • Access it from AU location or Change Location & Currency settings on the cd keys page

      • my bad. couldn't find the currency setting earlier.
I blame lack of coffee :)

        • Nope. Even with changing to AUD, once you add it to the cart, the price goes up to $7.13AUD so it's doing a conversion somewhere.
          Kind of annoying

  • I played it for 5h then put it down for 6months, then came back later and finished the game. Now I can add it to the game list I will never replay in my lifetime.

I couldn't stop playing this game once I started. The environmental storytelling incredibly engrossing; fans of Bioshock, Deadspace and Deus Ex should not hesitate to pick this up.

That said, I paid a measly $1 to play this on the Xbox Game Pass for PC. Worth every cent!
