Has anyone ever received an SMS from 0458 729 725 of the form:
[PayPal] Did you pay $X.yy AUD to RECEIVER on DD Month 2019? Reply 1 if yes or 2 if no. [Reply Needed]
I didn't respond and everything with the transaction seemed to go through okay, but the $X.yy AUD to RECEIVER on DD Month 2019 details were correct. A google search shows lots of conflicting opinions about this SMS but nothing I can find from Paypal themselves.

No particular reference from Paypal, but my phone automatically picked up that the sender was Paypal so it must be a known number.
You do know that SMS senders can be spoofed right?

The first comment is NOT from PayPal, number is fine.

I got this for large transaction where I cancelled and re-bought right away. Company, amount and timing were correct. I sent only the number "1" and got a thank you and thats it.
It's legit. No harm in confirming by replying "1" to let them know the transaction was made by you.
Yeah that happens when the Paypal system seems to pick up a high value purchase or unusual activity (happened to me when using a new eBay account). Nothing to worry about and I'd recommend sending back "1" next time to allow the payment to go through fine (even if it did this time anyway).
Seems to just be a 2 Factor Authentication to ensure the order is genuine.
