Gumtree- PayPal or Cash?

Good evening folks,

Probably concluding a sale tomorrow and it's a big ticket sale worth 1600 AUD. Was wondering if I should accept payment via cash or paypal.

My mate said paypal has its own risk, including chargebacks (ie. stolen card). As for cash i'm also considering the (low) risk of getting mugged after the transaction, as well as receiving counterfeit notes. But i live in the CBD and the transaction would happen there as well so the former shouldn't be too big a problem, but the latter is probably unavoidable.

Which option should i go for?

Cash. Do it in the bank, deposit over the counter. Hand over the goods when the teller gives you a receipt.

    out of the two, cash.
there are other ways, such as payid and beem it.
most banks have a $1000 daily limit for payid.
beem it has a $1000 daily limit.

    Cash only for gumtree

  • You can do a quick (and somewhat accurate except super good fakes) check of notes by turning on your phone's flashlight and putting them over the light. There will be a small "50" or "100" that is only visible under direct light. Also check the clear windows for the "50" or "100" which should be indented. Each note will take about 5 seconds once you get a rhythm going.

  • Do you need to ask a simple question like this ? omg ! Of course CASH !!!

  • He could send the money as a gift which PayPal won't let a Rosie be initiated over, but if the buyer funds that PayPal payment with a credit card, then they could ask their credit card provider to charge that payment back. PayPal probably have no choice but to accept the chargeback, and PayPal probably would want their 1600 PayPal dollars back from you too. or else they would be out $1600 and scammers would have bankrupted PayPal or their insurers years ago.

  • If as an Ozbargain member you even have to ask, then….. paypal. See you back here when it's reversed/you've been ripped off.

Cash, straight to the bank, done.

Gumtree is cash only, this should flash up whenever you open the app!

    TL:DR

    Gumtree=Cash Sales

  • Cash. PayPal is a pain and I was forced to use it once to receive a payment/refund they charge a fee to send to your bank account.
NO hassle to have a decent look at the notes and do the exchange near a bank branch or am ATM that accepts deposits so you're not carrying it.
Unless this person's given you some reason for concern……..

  • Paypal does not cover Gumtree. Very risky so cash only with Gumtree.

  • I feel that this topic should be a sticky by now.
