Microsoft Surface Connect to USB-C Adapter. The Surface Laptop 3 has just been announced which comes with a USB-C port so seems like Microsoft are selling these off cheap now. Previous post (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/444502) had it at $59.99.

Not much difference between Surface Laptop 2 and 3 except for newer processor and addition of USB-C port so you can upgrade your Laptop 2 to a 2.5 for $19.00!

Reviews are pretty average for this, (2/5 stars on Microsoft Store) but it's the only option to get a USB-C port on the older Surface devices.

    Thanks, bought one.

  • Thanks OP

Thanks OP. Come in very handy for the Surfacebook.

  • No issues with the Surface Pro 6?

Would be nice to have more than the solitary usb….

Does it require its own power so you can keep it on charge?

    • I'm confused by the: "connects Surface Laptop or newest Surface Pro" too

I can't imagine it not working on an older Surface with Surface Connect. Was there some difference between the models?

    • This will work with Surface Pro 6, I way eyeing this for some time and placed an order today (wouldn't have paid anything more than $20 anyway for this ) . The product itself is poorly designed due to bulky design with only one USB C port, but no other way to get USB C on SP6.

      • Thanks, doesn't that overpriced $200 dock allow c? But this won't pass through charging too?

        • That overpriced one doesn't have USB-C as well.

This will allow charging via USB C as long as the charger is outputting 45 W via PD

Thanks OP, bought one - Though the price was $19.00 delivered? Plus shopback.

    • You are right, it was $19.00, it was just a typo (:

  • Hi guys, bit confused. What does this do? Can I charge via USB Type C e.g. a PD Power bank?

    • Yes , as long as the PD power bank can output 45W

      • So if it’s PD but lower wattage then it won’t charge? Or will it charge slower?

        • +1

          It trickle charges apparently

    OOS…grrr

This is weird, doesn't the Surface Laptop 2 already have a USB-C port? Does this just mean you can charge a USB-C device via the powerbrick?

    • +2

The laptop 2 only has a USB-A port

      • -2

I wasn't sure if I was remembering properly so I got up to have a look.

        • +6

that's the surface book, not the surface laptop

  • Anyone who can give me personal suggestion on surface 2 or surface 3?

    • Do you mean surface laptop 2 vs 3 . .

If USB C built in is an absolute must, then laptop 3, otherwise Laptop 2 is more than enough for 2-3 years to come at least

If you are loaded, check out the 15 inch model

      • Personally, i'd prefer the laptop 3, purely for the aluminium(?) version instead of alcantara.

        • Thankfully It's magnesium like rest of the surface version it seems, aluminium is too cold to the touch in winter..

          • @otter-raptor: Yeah that's why I put the question mark, most reviews have stated that it has aluminium but it seems weird to me that Microsoft would suddenly switch when they have been using magnesium for the Book.

  • Damn would have loved this for my surface pro 3. Didn't even know such a device existed.

    • Not too sure if this works for surface pro 3 & 4. According to Microsoft, it works for surface pro 5 (2017) and newer.
It might still work but just another USB C hub as a data transfer but not USB C charging.

  • Anyone know if this would work with the Surfacebook 1?

  • If someone’s purchased this incorrectly or impluse-bought. I just missed out on this for my SP5. Happy to but it off someone +$10 for the trouble.

  • is it just a dongle for USB C sticks or is it for PD charging also?

    • Does power delivery and data both

    • Took a gamble and ordered for my surface pro 3. Used my $10 Bing rewards to partially found it.

I left tabs open on my phone and PC hoping this would get back in stock. Happy days! Just ordered one 😀

  • Mine was delivered today, I can confirm the reviewd regarding the size of the dongle - it is comically large. No idea why Microsoft couldn't make it smaller but it works as advertised at least. Can also confirm that charging with a PD charger does work.

    • May I ask you which SP you have? I know it works for mine SP 5 (2017), want to confirm if this works for SP4 too.
Also, read somewhere that this adaptor was apparently designed to troll everyone who wanted a USB type C adaptor out of SP back then 😂😂, so yeah it is comically large.

      • I've got the surface laptop 2.

Will test charging etc with SP4 when arrives.

        • Cheers Mate, let us know how it goes.

      • Just wondering what charger did you use for your SP5(2017)?
I tried mine with both macbook pro charger (87W) and another smaller charger (USB-C PD 65W), none of them work.
The connector work for data / connecting to monitor, but I couldn't get it to work for charging yet.

        • I used MacBook Pro (87W) charger, the one that came with the box and it works great.

  • Got mine last night too, doesn't work with my surface go. It's listed under "surface go accessories". https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/store/collections/surfacegoa…

  • +2

Confirmed working as a charger for my Surface Pro 3.

    • What are you using to charge it? Mine stops charging after 2-3 seconds.

      • Laptop charger with 65w USB type c

        • Thanks. My dock (Dell D6000) apparently outputs up to 65w. No idea why it's not working.

  • Does anyone recommend a usb c hub that has multiple ports car readers and also chargers uo teh surface device with this adaptor ?

  • Decided to return.
Not so easy to do that. Site directs to select Request a return in Order History (option not available).

Contacted MS - virtual assistant on site kept giving incorrect info or not responding. On 6th attempt, organised call back via UK number.

After being transferred 3 times, 45 minutes later organised a full refund via Microsoft in El Salvador!
Waiting on Return paperwork, then pack & send it. Don't know if the hassle was worth the $19 refund!

Both my USB-C power supply were not up to charging a SP4. So would need to add cost of hub, (PowerBank) & power supply to get things working. Too much effort & cost for me.

Only wanted it for charging & faster file transfer. Won't need it now.
