Sim Card for Home Internet ?

Hi All,

I am just doing some research for my phone's sim card plan as it is about to run out and was looking at the Boost deal

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/492625

And while looking at the deal and some comments, it made me think why am I paying $720 a year for home internet ($60x12 with TPG)

Is there reason why I cant use a sim card Instead and run internet from there with a modem?

Not great with my Tech, if this is not do-able please let me know.

    depends on your usage

is 240gb data PER YEAR enough ?

    that's like 20GB per month

telstra has tablet data sim 5gb for $15/month but allows unlimited 1.5 Mbps once 5gb is exhausted

can easily rack up over 50gb or more in a month for $15, as it's unlimited albeit 1.5 Mbps

We have recently got rid of our broadband and are using a pocket wifi. We buy cheap sims and just activate as required. We use around 30 gig a month. We are extremely happy using 4g it is so quick

  • We use a Kogan (Vodafone) SIM in a Kogan branded modem for our semi-rural property and it works great (no NBN or ADSL available).

    It's only 40GB a month, but it's also only $25.90 a month!!!

Easily doable on almost any device which uses a SIM card. You can either hotspot or use a USB cable.

We cut over to this setup about 9 months ago

Deployed one of these with the Kogan XL plan which you can easily pick up for 4.90 every few months or so
The netgear modem on top does the sim card LTE connection. Because it has an ethernet port, it makes it simple to plug into your existing home network for printing and extended wifi access around the home.

I just found out I am using 150Gb a month!

I was shocked, like where does all these data goes to?

    • Pawn.

      • I prefer the casting couch scenario.

Mobile wifi is fine, as long as you don't do any streaming. Once you introduce youtube or netflix into the mix, you need one of those ultra data plans to keep up.

    • I use about 100gb a month on mobile data, which includes Netflix, YouTube and Xbox.
      No 4k streaming though.

      • There was a deal last year, or the year before, for 200gb when you bought an Iphone from HN on a 24m contract.

I forget the exact details, but the jist of it was that you could sell the iphone, and in the end it would end up costing you $20 a month for the sim. Something like that would be an appropriate replacement for a light-moderate user.

  • I'm away at the beach house for the weekend. Might try and get the Telstra $15 5GB/1.5Mbps unlimited data SIM, chuck it in an old iPhone and see how it goes with Netflix.

    Speed. Download limits.

    • Download limits I understand but speed?
isn't mobile speed quicker? i am getting about 190 mbps on my phone and only 90 at home

      • You need to have a high end device to get those speeds.

Crap phones and usb modems are generally cat4, and pretty limited. Plus bandwidth is shared, so if everyone in your neighbourhood uses mobile data, the speed will tank in the evening.
