Any recommendations for fly screens?

Any one know of a decent fly screen installer for my external doors? I'm in Sydney
Can't believe the prices being quoted for security screen doors.

If they are aluminum, get a roll and a cheap roller from Bunnings, cut it to size with some overlap and do it yourself. It's very easy (watch a Youtube video if you've never done it before). Might be easier to remove the door first and do it on the ground for large sliding doors or get an extra pair of hands to hold the screen up as you roll the spline in place.

He did mine couple of years ago for $325 incl. material and installation.

    • Thanks. But he only services Penrith region.

Make sure you get one that Diji1 can't rip open with his bare hands.

  • We paid $45 per window measured, supplied & installed, just got someone of gumtree.

  • Depends on the type of screen you want. We received a quote about 2 years ago for fly screen doors. It wasn't expensive if you just get the standard fly screen mesh doors. When you start going for the tougher mesh then it gets pricey.

    Fly screens aren't security screens.

The security screens, that have an aluminium mesh, I think, have a clip style system that locks the screens into place so that any tension applied to the screen is absorbed by these clips and spread evenly around the frame of the door, which is why they’re expensive, and the mesh they use is much thicker than fly screen.

Fly screen is typically sold as a rolled sheet of thin, vinyl, aluminium, or stainless steel mesh that is thin enough to be placed onto a fly screen door where you then use a thin length of coiled rubber, I think it’s called spline, which is then pushed into a narrow track around the outer frame of the door, using a spline roller.

With enough force one can fairly easily push a fly screen from a fly screen door as it’s not designed to be resistant to much other than insects, whereas the thicker security mesh on security doors has a unique profile and lock in system to prevent people from pushing it out.

So, if you’re after security screens they are more expensive for that reason. If it’s simply a fly screen, they are remarkably easy to DIY install with a spine roller, a sharp Stanley knife, a length of spline, and a roll of applicable width, and length fly screen. As ihbh said above, it’s very doable, and will save you a fair bit if you can do it yourself.
