They're still selling CDs / people are still buying CDs?

    • -2

Yes. They are still living in 1980s.

The music I bought in the 80s is on cassette or vinyl.

        • Were CDs too expensive for you to buy in the 80's?
Anyway, you can now buy them all again with this list!

@chrism238: Not much (if any) of this stuff came out in the 80s.

The first CDs made in Australia were in late 1986. Both CDs and CD players were too expensive for the likes of me. I bought a second hand CD player in 1992. By then the difference in price between cassettes and CDs was less.

I carry my Sony discman in my bum bag.

For travel, I rip them @ 320 kbps and listen on the phone. The discs stay at home.

Why stopping there , rip it under FLAC, no loss there and SD cards are cheap 😂

    • Personally I find it odd that vinyl has overtaken CDs.
I can rip a CD flawlessly with my computer but would need extra equipment to rip a vinyl record.
      Plus they're much more compact.

      • For me, a vinyl junkie of 40 years, vinyl complements streaming.
        I don't rip music anymore.
So for digital listening - stream, and for the sit down ceremony - vinyl.
I always hated cds so personally i'm glad to see the back of them.
It's just a shame that so much new vinyl is poorly pressed and also mastered for cd.
For the first time, vinyl does not sound better than cd.
It's the same information with an analogue layer inserted.

        Sorry, wrong meeting.

        • For the first time, vinyl does not sound better than cd.

Vinyl is incapable of reproducing audio transparently unlike 16bit 44.1 kHz sampling.

It sounds better because confirmation bias applies to you like it does to everybody else. Most audiophiles consider themselves to have magical ears so that confirmation bias doesn't apply to them though even though there is no evidence for this.

    • I love buying CDs and vinyl.

  • As someone that appreciates higher quality audio I still made the switch to Spotify, convenience just can't be beaten. No regrets.

Sounds like you appreciate convenience more

      • Uh no, I have a huge interest in high end audio, but a 2.5yo, and countless clutter aren't worth it.

        • Been there, done that, regret it and am now rebuilding my collection. Here's my advice…

In a few years when your kid wants to listen to music, they will go to a phone/tablet or computer. 5min later they are sitting in front of a screen watching youtube video's.

If you appreciate music and your kids, get rid of other junk in your house, keep your physical collection and pass on that appreciation to them.

          • @Villainous: It's also the convenience in a car…. 18 years ago I almost killed myself changing a disc driving… (18yo p plater..) Android Auto and Spotify are a god send.

I have the speakers and amplifiers both in car and home that'll bring up the differences quite noticeably, but the ease of having everything at a fingertip is hard to pass.

            • @scuderiarmani: I have an in dash stacker which i load and enjoy for months without changing albums, so cd's work for me.

Changing cd's or touching a phone while driving is obviously not a smart thing to do.

If it works for you then great, more gold left out there in the op shops for me to find!

        • there is no such thing as music clutter, that's how us cats live, we live in a sty of music

$1.99 at savers, better quality too, new CD releases are cost reduced

    • Savers is second hand with no guarantee of what you'll get (or what condition it will be in). This post is for new items in a major retailer.

      • No guarantee? You open it up and check the disc. You also get a receipt to return any cd that does not play.

  • Picked up two of the Garbage CD anniversary sets…. luckily found them at Miranda

Tend to buy CDs when they are on these sales….
