[NSW] Free Beer if Sydney CBD/Southeast Light Rail Makes It from Randwick to The Morrison by X’Mas (Sydney) (RSVP Required)

1900

“I’m so confident that it won’t run on time that I’ll shout the whole city a drink if the tram makes it from Randwick to the stop outside The Morrison with a cargo of paying passengers by Christmas” – Fraser Short, owner of The Morrison Bar & Oyster Room

It’s official: according to NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian, trams will finally run along Sydney’s George Street in December. After four long years of delays and disruption, our owner, Fraser Short is so convinced that Sydney’s CBD and Southeast Light Rail will run behind schedule yet again, he’s promised to throw the city a Tram Party if he’s proved wrong.

Free beer if it makes it here, wine if its on time. RSVP now to an off the rails party that may or may not happen and we’ll update you on if this tram is on track.

The Morrison Bar & Oyster Room
225 George St,
Sydney NSW 2000

The new right rail started test runs (which means no more crossing George St. without looking first!) so good chance for the freebie bevvie :)

    That crazy Fraser.

  • +25

    Unobtainable deal?

  • +22

Will there be a free beer if Morrison is still PM by Xmas?

    • +12

I’d prefer cyanide if he is.

      • +4

Mediocrity and dissimulation not your style then Martijn? Not to worry, he'll pray for you at his next singalong.

  • I read about this a few days ago but posting it is golden lmao

  • Sure I’m in

  • +6

    Probably offering Fosters or VB

    • -2

      VB is great!

      • +8

You dropped something, here it is

        /s

      • +3

        I actually like VB also.

        • +3

I envy the savings you make on beer

      • It's got nothing on West end

    • +1

lets not go rubbing our national icons

      • +2

Particularly the statues. Do it in the wee hours if you must.

  • +3

Oh yes, heaps of free publicity for the bar and its owner.

    • +4

Not free if he has to pay up

      • +7

The digital footprint this publicity has achieved for the business is massive. RSVP = money for peoples contact information…email DOB and postcode for an opt in offer? Come on, at worst this is a data grab with irrelevant information requested.

Also, maybe I'm paranoid but the post has some quality fluff not perninent to the bargain but it's a great story. Literally building a bars identity.

        • +1

Indeed, I'm not giving my personal details fur a free beer. Too cheap.

      • Okay, either free or very cheap, it's a bargain for them anyway.

  • +7

What an excellent ploy. A free beer doesn't cost much and people usually drink more than one beer at a pub. Hats off to the owner or agency that achieved it.

    • +3

Some even order food with their beer!

      • Exactly, I love pub grub! It's such a good promo

  • +2

You also have to factor in all the lost business they have suffered due to these massive delayed infrastructure works.

  • +3

Whoever in their marketing department suggested this should get free drinks for a year

Recent observations would be taking the Metro from Macquarie Uni to Chatswood with lots of very well dressed Metro staff standing around and doing sweet f*&$ all, whilst Microsoft Windows 98 (second edition mind you, so all good) drives the train. (Current status is perpetual Beta im my opinion)
Last Sunday I was in Circular Quay and they had heaps of trams doing their testing with destination Randwick emblazoned on their front. A few puzzled tourists tried to get on with no avail. Zero staff to advise. (My opinion: Alpha testing till further notice)

PS: All said and done, I quite like the Metro.
PPS: looking forward to a good pint

  • Fraser, I live in a regional area so I’m unable to take you up on this exceptionally good offer. Your offer is up there with the 9th wonder of the world.
I reckon you’ve now put it out there to challenge the NBN with its declaration that the NBN will be finished in 2020. If the NBN mob was half honourable it would declare 3, maybe 4, years of free NBN via a provider of your own choice if Santa arrives in 2020:before the NBN is finished.
Interestingly, the online bookies don’t have a market re the NBN’s end date.

    • +5

Unfortunately the NBN ended the day Turnbull - the bloke who invented the internet in Australia according to the Mad Monk - got hold of it Cecilly.

  • +2

Funny, but I don't see this as a confirmed bargain as it's based on chance. It's just an advertisement. Probably to harvest email addresses. They state it's not likely to be finished themselves. Not a bargain and shouldn't be on here.

    • +1

To be fair, free wine is on offer if beer conditions are not met.

      • No the wine is beer conditions plus it has to arrive on time.
Though they don't have a firm timetable so not sure how on time is measured? The transport website does estimate arrivals but they don't claim it is a real timetable.

  • This is a huge (but very intelligent) PR stunt.

Tram doesn't come: Attention and no cost.

Tram does come: A lot of a attention and lots of paying customers going through the doors.

Been close to full capacity day testing this week (tram every 5 Minutes) almost 99% certain to be operating in early Dec.

    • Breakdown yesterday in the middle of an intersection in George Street causing traffic chaos.
Reports of another similar breakdown again this morning.
      I don't share your optimism.

  • ITT: A large group of mainly middle aged men excitedly counting down to Christmas.

    See you boys there.

Fare free on the first two days (14 & 15 December), so the first paying passengers would be on the 16th. I guess the drinks are on, then?
