Get 100,000 Velocity Pts with a New American Express Velocity Platinum Credit Card (Spend $3000 within 3mths, $375 Fee PA)

730

Hi All,

IMO the best bang for buck amex card is back at its highest sign up bonus! Normally 50k sign up bonus, it is back up to 100K points with a $3k spend in 3 months. Website is still showing 50k points but if you use a referral link (just hit one of the referrals below) then you will get 100k points. Bonus for the referrer is 40k velocity points for them too, so if you have the card already start signing up your spouses, children and pets for 140k points a pop! Annual fee is $375 but that is easily offset by the value of the points and the return virgin flight which i have previously been able to flog for about $250 to people via OzB.

This offer available to new Card Members only. Annual Fee $375 per annum

Referral Links

Business Explorer Card: random (1)

Referrer: 40,000 Reward Points

Centurion Personal Charge Card: random (8)

Referee gets 200,000 MR points. Referrer gets 150,000 MR points.

  • Can someone with an amex platinum edge create a referral for this card? I think it used to be able to.. ?

    • +3

Yes you can. Person you're referring just needs to scroll down the page, click co brand cards and select the right offer. You will still get points

      • Just tried it from a Velocity Escape referral link too; scrolled down and selected the Platinum card and it showed 100k on the page.

        • How does it work if say you use your Explorer to refer someone for this card? Would you referral bonus come in the way of Velocity points or just MR points?

  • How did you flog the return ticket…I have one as well and don't need it. $250 is good value.

      • my classified ad got flagged and unpublished even though I just copied the text from another ad. Dont know what I did wrong?

        • well others have no issue posting them, if you are unsure as to why it was unpublished I would ask a mod @ Talk With a Moderator sub-forum.
I thought a reason was usually given (eg, posting too frequently per day, posting same ad again within 30 days, etc).

          • @bohn: Apparently, clasified guidelines have been updated 5th June 2019 "No offering personal services/purchasing on behalf of others." Ah…well….

            • @rdhupar: Oh, damn. That's interesting (and a shame).

  • Is the referral system working for this one?

  • Will I still qualify for bonus points if I closed my Amex David Jones 10 months ago?

    • +1

You can get the bonus on both cards. Amex DJ is a special category which means you can get a bonus on that one + on a regular Amex card (you can hold both cards at the same time too)

      • What I meant was is Amex DJ included in 18 months waiting period?

        • +2

no it has it's own waiting period.

        • +3

DJ Amex, Westpac Amex and regular Amex cards all have their own waiting period. This means you can get a sign-up bonus on each card regardless of whether you already hold or held one in the 18 months prior.

          • @points4life: Does the Velocity and Qantas branded AMEXs also fit under this? I had an Explorer earning MR points so I wonder whether it's different because I'd be earning Velocity points now

            • +1

@LemonShapedRock: No, unfortunately it doesn't. With Amex there are 4 types of card groups which are all separate and allow you to earn a bonus in a different group/family of cards, these are:

Amex Corporate cards (not to be confused with business cards)
              Amex Westpac cards
              Amex David Jones Cards
Amex (direct issued such as: Explorer, Edge, Ultimate, VA platinum etc)

so how do we know it's back up to 100,000 if the link doesn't even show it o_O

    • when you click on a referral it shows 100k.
      OP said:

Website is still showing 50k points but if you use a referral link (just hit one of the referrals below)

      • takes me to DJ card and both show incorrect values
"Receive 40,000 Reward Points1 When you apply, are approved and spend $750 on your new Card in the first 3 months of Card Membership. This offer is available to new Card Members, as well as Bank-issued American Express companion cardholders.
Earn 4 Reward Points per $1 spent at David Jones2"

Click 'show 12 more' and click on a referral for the velocity platinum.

          • -2

            @bohn: Thant makes more sense.

OP / mod - please put this in description

  • +2

I tried clicking for velocity platinum link and it does show 100,000 bonus points if you apply by 29 Jan 2020

    • +1

Still might as well use a referral.

I was curious to see where the complimentary flight could go. The map is handy, but the residents of Emerald wouldn't be too happy with the typo for their town name (Emerlard).

This deal is straight up better if you can manage the 4.5K min spend

    • Unless you value virgin points higher than qantas… I like to have a kitty of both qantas and virgin points so if there is a particular route/destination/airline i want to travel on i have options as well as if one airline doesn't have availability and the other one does.

      • Except 120K QFF can be traded for 120K VFF. Missing out on 20K points of value…

      • +4

Virgin points are better than Qantas. Qff devalued by 15% and flight availability is also much less than VA

Current market rate of qff is about 25% less than VA

    • These are both AMEX issued cards right… i.e. you can't get the points for both?

      • You can't get the bonus for both.

    • I would rather 100k and to be called SIR when i board the aircraft

  • what's the minimum income for this card?

  • This is a great card, always my go to. It’s just a pity you have to wait 18 months after you cancel to pick it up again.

    • +1

Get both. Sell the amex flight and use the ANZ flight as you can't sell that one. Sell the lounge passes that come with the ANZ to reduce the cost further.

      • I don't want to reduce my credit rating by having too many applications together.
Just need something I will use consistently throughout the years.

  • If you’d had an Explorer before do you think you’d still get credited the points? I’m thinking because it’s co-branded and non Membership Rewards it might not detect and credit anyway?

    Might be wishful thinking..

    • Only if it's been 18 months since you closed the explorer.

  • -2

The Qantas Ultimate looks like it was better with the 100k qantas points, 2x lounge passes and $450 travel credit but that's now expired as of 09/10.

  • anybody granted on an average credit score?

    • credit scores don't really matter, and what is "average" anyway?

      • -1

        510-621

Mine has dipped cause I only applied a card last month

        • there's 3 agencies who use different scales.

  • How do you know which other Amex cards can refer you for this deal?

My friends have a variety of cards and I'd love to boost their balance before looking at ozb referrals (sorry everyone)

    • try.

  • got approved for this one, pity it wont align with the double SC promotion by the time the card arrives, but happy none the less

    • You do realise SCs aren’t earned on flights booked with points right?

      • +1

yep, I usually pay for flights, gain platinum, then use points till its close reverting back to silver then repeat, im not into the whole points hacking, more so the cheap business and first class flights that gains enough points for many overseas trips

      • Sorry new here, whats SC promotion?

  • deleted answered above

  • Thanks OP. Applied a few days ago and got approved today. Some lucky referrer will get a bit of points :).

  • Thanks OP!

I think I can make minimum spend if I prepay council/H20 rates.

T & C Pop-up closes when I tried to copy and paste but council & water not expressly excluded from minimum eligible spend.

Which card are ozbargainers recommending for getting points by paying like Council/water rates?

  • I applied a few days back, and haven’t heard from them. Didn’t even get an email

    • They dont send an email, basically you wait, and you will get a text stating the outcome.

      • Thanks bit strange , they said 4-5 days

        • Got rejected :(

  • I currently have a corporate charge card with Amex. Would I still qualify for the introductory offer?

  • Approved on the spot, nice to have a proper application process without any errors after the nightmare of dealing with Citi.

  • Has the deal expired - only says bonus 50,000 points for me now?

    • Nup still says 100k. Just need to ensure you use a referral link cause the website still has 50k when no referral used.

      • oh thanks mate i didnt read properly

  • referal link seems not working anymore?

    • Still works, just hit chillybags or random and it takes you to the page for 100k

  • Guess using a referral is more rewarding for both sides, rather than applying directly to Amex, this deal so tempting (trying to figure out which directly issued Amex to pick)

  • Applied for this and had it in my hands less than a week later. Nice one. Now to get those points!

    • +1

I received the card in 3 days :o

  • Offer extended to 12th Feb for those who didn't get this card already.

  • Just to reminder to those considering this offer that a 'new card member' is defined as one that as not already held an American Express card during the previous 18 months…

I thought it was only 12 months and despite the quick approval for this latest offer back in November, I have only just found out that I am not eligible for the 100k velocity points as I had previously taken advantage of this offer a couple of years ago yet my membership had only lapsed just over 12 months ago.

Fortunately, I was able to cancel the card and get my membership fee refunded in full as I had not yet redeemed the free flight.

IF you are eligible then its a pretty good deal.

    • How did you or Amex pick up on this? I’ve always wondered how/if the actually keep track of the waiting period.

      • I called them to ask how much of the spend criteria I had remaining and it was only at that time that I was told that it wasn't applicable for me as I hadn't met the required waiting period.

I got the overall impression that they believe the flight redemption is worth the $375 fee on its own, but for me it was the combination of both flight and points that made this offer attractive.
I said that at no point during the application process was I warned that I did not meet the full criteria of the offer, and that I wouldn't have taken the card if I had known this - but they said it was in their terms and conditions.

It is obviously been monitored and I can only assume that I would have eventually found this out when I queried the points not being applied after 3 months.

As I said they were pretty fair about it and offered me a full refund on my membership fee on the understanding that I wanted to cancel the card and that I hadn't used up the free flight redemption - which I hadn't.

I assume that if I had used the flight redemption voucher then this would be a different story.

        • Yeh ok interesting. I assume you need to wait another 18 months from now to be eligible for a sign up bonus again?

      • It's in the terms and conditions people don't bother reading…

        Literally number 1 in the terms and conditions;

        1. Bonus & Eligibility: 100,000 bonus Velocity Points offer is only available to new American Express Card Members who apply for the American Express Velocity Platinum Card online by 12 February 2020, are approved and spend $3,000 on their new card within the first 3 months from the Card approval date. Card members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer. Eligible purchases do not include cash advances, interest, balance transfers, fees and charges for traveller’s cheques and foreign currencies. 100,000 bonus Velocity Points will be awarded to the eligible Card member’s Velocity account 8-10 weeks after the spend criteria has been met. This advertised offer is not applicable or valid in conjunction with any other advertised or promotional offer.

Maybe people confused the credit card eligibility with the bonus points eligibility… as the website clearly shows card requirements, but bonus points are in the T & C's

Amex can track all your previous cards you've held with them.
