Why do they always looked this ugly?

  • +7

hey beauty is on the inside, don't judge a Handheld radio by it's cover

  • wht would I use it for….? Hmmm lol

    • LOL thats what I am thinking to myself too…how to justify the cost?

Could make a good present for my aunty and uncle on their farm if all else fails!

    • +2

always wanted a couple of these for road trips.

have one in each car and talk smack to each other as a way to pass the time.

    • ha ha your user name "aflrunner" is a perfect use.

its surprising how quickly your fitness is tested when being a runner in junior footy.
i have thought about using a pair with headsets between me and the coach on game day

  • Please note that these are 40 channel, we've moved to a 80 channel system now.

(They still work, but there will no longer be any new 40 channel ones).

    • +1

Sorry for my ignorance, aside from double the channel amount, does this affect anything?

      • not really. I rarely find people using ch 41-80. If you bought these you would be wanting a better unit before you feel a neeed to get access to the extra 40 channels.

        • You rarely find people using the higher channels because hardly anyone would have a new one yet.

New channels became official in May.

      • It's not really a 'problem,' just that these are 'old tech' (hence the cheapness).

The systems are compatible (on the first 40 channels).

      • +2

        Yes it does.
The new channels are in between the old ones. So if you have a strong signal on an adjacent chanel you will be more suseptible to "bleed over" or interference from the adjacent channel.
        Solution, just change channels.
Time will tell if the manufactures will improve the reciever performance, but that comes at more cost.
For the price they are excellent value.

    • All new UHF CB radios have 2 of the 40 channels disabled, so they are really 38 Ch UHF CB's

*Please note CH 22 & 23 are used for telemetry and telecommand applications, voice communications are not permitted on these channels and transmission is inhibited.<<

  • How many channels can you use at any one time anyway?

  • Lolz ! If all else fails the would be a good toy of the kids.

  • for talking, 1 channel or 2 for duplex, but if your radio has a scan function, all of them!

  • great for music festivals when you can't make phone calls from your mobile due to network congestion

    • +3

yeah… but might be congested on all the 40 channels at the venue…. I thinks tin cans and string might be the go!!…. lol

    • +2

If your phone supports it, try switching from 3G to GSM/Edge. Hardly any young person uses GSM any more. At this year's Big Day Out my Telstra iPhone kept dropping out and couldn't access the Internet. When I switched to Edge I had no problems making calls or retrieving data.

  • Bought a set of these when we we were camping with the family a couple of years back where there was no GSM coverage. Enabled the wife and I to go separate ways on a dusk bushwalk and not get lost.

    • +4

did you decide to walk separate ways because you were irate at the lack of GSM?

      • they were grinding the local fauna for gold pieces.

  • i thought they are walkie-talkie's

    • Considerin hitman has already gotten negged im sure ill get flamed for askin this but, are they not? What is the difference?

      • Yes they are walkie talkies, but a pair of better specced ones~

        • Thanks thats what I thought.
excellent, got a pair, thx op

        • Walkie talkies have a range of 50m tops, a UHF handheld radio has a range of 3km on a good day. (Less due to obstruction and weather conditions.)

Also they sit on a common standard of channels, so you can buy another type and expect it to work on the same system.

    • walkie talkie used to be specific brand, but now applies to any handheld transceiver, whether it be a UHF CB or one using other frequencies.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walkie-talkie

  • Thanks, bought a pair!
Like raichu said, could be good for road trips. Also will be useful when doing work on the roof and attempting to communicate with down below.

Was no stock when I checked yesterday or today, at this price.

has anyone ordered a pair online at this price?

  • They're great for car cruises and bush doofs

  • I actually need a 3 handset system for work…anyone know if i can buy an extra handset and have them all work on same system?

    • +1

Just buy two of these sets and have a spare. They will work, as long as they are all on the same channel.

    • +1

UHF CB radios will all talk to each other so long as they are on the same channel and any "privacy" features like CTCSS are matched up or disabled, It doesn't matter about the brand.

  • I bought a pair of these a few years back and have still yet to put them to use on a camping trip or road expedition, etc. Although sometimes I listen in on stations because Truckie's are hilarious and they have an articulate vocabulary of expletives that they often pull out.

  • must PTT right? you couldnt both talk at the same time? e.g. driver cant use it like a speaker phone right?

    • That's how radios work, two people can't broadcast at the same time. ( Someone could make a complex voice detection system but that would just cause major annoyance. :P )

      • If you had 2 radios then you could talk and listen at the same time, the radios would have to be set up to not interfere with each other. But, no. These cannot be used in this way for "full duplex" operation.

        • It supports a duplex mode if you use a repeater on the first 8 channels, but it means constant broadcast, though it has a power saving feature.

  • Great deal, purchased!

  • +3

Have these at work between the 4 factories.
Great set for the price, but would recommend using rechargeable batteries.
They are palm size, so great to carry in pockets.

The only downfall, with most higher end models, there’s a function where you can ‘beep’ another handset to gain their attention, you can’t on this model.

Ohh, and Officeworks will price match + 5% off

    • +2

Free Delivery > 5% off imo. (If you can't be bothered going into the store anyway.)

And thanks for the info I was wondering if it was ok to use NiMH batteries in it.

      • +1

search ozbargain for the eneloop deal with charger and 4AA rechargables (as long as they use AA) otherwise thay have a AAA deal too
        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/47564

        • Yep I grabbed some AAA eneloops to go with the handsets. (4+2x AAA, they use 3x AAA each.)

Though the charger comes with AA, so I'll put them in the Wii or something lol.

  • It would be so cool to get these and run around your backyard rolling from cover to cover and pretending you are a super spy cop ninja with a friend!

  • +1

Got a pair. Going 2 seaworld next week with 2 families. When we had enough of each other, I will give them 1 and then go the other way. Thank you op, saved my sanity:)

  • nice, just need something with bluetooth or a headphone port speaker/mic so i can use them on the bikes!
(anyone know of any or can you do it with these?)

    • It would take a long time to get bluetooth working on these, I am not sure if they have headphone/ mic out?

  • Just bought myself 2 sets for a trip on a cruise ship this christmas. The kids will love them and we can keep track of them :)

  • +2

BTW - added in a link to the user manual in the original post ; )

  • Bummer…
I had one added in my cart.
Then got pulled in to a few meetings until now.
But when I try processing my sale, it gave me a 'timeout' message, and now they are no longer available for the special price.
    :-((

  • monkeys! all gone. need one for upcoming road trip. If anyone bought an extra pair I'll happily purchase for rounded up princely sum of $30 :) please let me know

  • These don't appear to have CTCSS tones, so be prepared for loud static in busy or RF-noisy places!

  • Wow, they are really tiny.

(Waiting for batteries, so I can't comment on their performance.)

  • pity i missed out on this i saw a set at aldi which looked alright for $25

  • I have this exact same model bought from a little over a year ago. They were $59.99. They work a treat and I use them for roadtrips and festivals. Good that they're so cheap now. IMHO, Uniden has a pretty decent reputation in radios as well.

    • Uniden has a decent reputation? Don't let the GME/Icom/Motorola crowd read that! ;)

      • LOL. I wasn't comparing them. Just felt that they aren't completely rubbish brands. :)

        • true… coughoricomdorocough*
