  • Seems like a very good deal, if you're already in the Amazon environment…

    • If not, reasonable value for the Plug and Bulb which will work with Google and a handy way to trial Alexa.

is it cheaper than just buying them separately

        • +1

Can vouch for the plug, I have had 3 for 12 months and have not missed a beat. One on the kettle set to boil in the morning, one on the pool filter and one floating for where/when I need it.

HS100 still retails for about $30 - $35 on its own, Bunnings recently had them on clearance for $25.

    • if you're already in the Amazon environment

It includes Alexa? This is the starter kit to get into the Amazon environment, is it not?

      • +1

Yeah sure - I more meant if you're not already in the Google environment.

But as a above, it's probably still a good value pack.

      • Yes. Sort of. The plug and bulb work with the 'Kasa' App - so doesn't need to be tied into the Amazon ecosphere (or any other).

If you can't beat em, join em.

Just seems so wrong JB selling Amazon gear.

    • Just seems so wrong JB selling Amazon gear.

      How?

      • You really need to ask? They'd see Amazon as their biggest competitor..

        • Online stores like Google and Apple they also may see as competitors as well however they still sell the items as there a reseller.

          • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Apple and Google aren't trying to take away their core business, they are just a tiny fraction of the products they sell. Completely different.

Do you reckon Myer sells David Jones Gift Cards? Or McDonalds gives Whopper vouchers?

            Apple doesn't sell Galaxy Phones… Samsung doesn't sell iPhones…

            • +1

@scuderiarmani: Why would Samsung sell inferior phones (except some of their own ;)?

              • @taki: Cause it doesn’t explode that often :)

  • +2

that's one gen older on the echo right? they are 3rd gen now for $39. Still good value though.

  • +2

If it was 3rd gen for the dot I would be all over this… I know they improved the speaker alot since 2nd.

    • You're not kidding! Check out the video.

      https://www.digitaltrends.com/home/google-home-mini-vs-amazo…

I got the 2 Google Nest for Telstra Plus points deal and I still have no idea what to do with them other than amuse my daughter with Akinator and test which swear words and phrases it'll beep out translating (which is really is quite funny). I'm not interested in spending $100 so I can tell Google to turn my lights on and off, I can search the web (or specialized services) just fine with my keyboard, and I'm not paying money so I can pick which song is playing on a bad speaker when I can play whatever I want via my computer or phone. Oh and I hate the lack of privacy. I don't trust it to do real translation either. Another tech fad that will fade away or be partly subsumed into everyday stuff is my guess.

      • I think I heard the same comment last decade that a phone without keyboard would fade away… oh well :)

        • So you heard a prediction about tech a decade ago and it was wrong, therefore all predictions about tech are wrong and to be ridiculed?

And you still can't answer the question: What does it do for me that's worth me forking out hundreds of dollars for!?

What do they teach in schools these days?

  • I find the older better for some places like bathroom or kitchen. Can't imagine a fabric case in either location, at least all plastic case can just wipe off.

  • This is such a good deal, I paid for each of these items individually a year ago and shelled out $130 total. Then the smart plug started going on sale constantly along with the Echo Dot. Big regrets.

Old version, plug worth 15 and bulb 10.
Kmart sells the Spot for $49
Bunnings got the 5" Square box for $78

they are all data suckers privacy compromises but voice recognition is amazing, good educational tools

  • Dammit now Google and Amazon are going to get a ton of data from me.

    • All these virtual assistants have got from me so far is a list of profane requests and suggestions :-) What I type into my phone is a different story.

  • +1

If anyone wants just a smart wifi plug (compatible with Alexa and Google), Aldi Bauh brand is on clearance from $19.99 to $14.99. Plenty available at Caroline springs VIC probably other stores too.

    • I gather that the special has finished…?
