Fridge - Electrolux Vs Westinghouse Vs LG

Asked on WP as well…

My Samsung is packing up so we’re looking to get a fridge. Want to avoid a Samsung and would ideally have plumbed cool water and ice.

Between the three above, what’s the more respected brand? I realize both Electrolux and Westinghouse are the same company.

Both companies have identical looking 680l French door fridges. Could it be that they’re the same model internally? The Westinghouse is a few hundred dollars cheaper. (EHE6899SA vs WHE6874SA).

After a horrible experience with Samsung where I was manually defrosting the ice around the condenser every few months, I’m a bit reluctant to buy another Korean brand. What’s the general impression of LG fridges?

Thanks

The old "lets suggest something you haven't listed" but I've been very happy with our Hisense, and it gets reviewed very well, and has one of the best manufacturer warranties. Not plumbed in, has a storage container with a dispenser which imo is better for the long-term

This was after our Samsung shat itself twice in about 8yrs or so

Good Guys salesman told me that Westinghouse and Hisense come out of the same factory and are essentially identical products. The Hisense freezer I ended up going with was cheaper and had a longer warranty, so +1 for this over Westinghouse.

Of the brands above though, I'd definitely go LG. Definitely ditch Samsung, I've had issues with every Samsung product I ever owned.

  • I'm a fan of LG for other things but their fridges have been dodgy in the past:

Westinghouse is owned by Electrolux. They essentially come out of the same factory.
I have an Electrolux fridge with water and icemake for last 2 years and have not had an issue.
I believe the Electrolux is more efficient so that's why I bought it.

I've also had a Samsung double door and no issues either. But my friend has had massive leaks from a new Samsung, had their timber floor replaced after alot of disputing and months wasted.

LG fridges are meant to be very good, my friend has 2 of the high end models and has not missed a beat.

I would not go lower tier brand. No experience with them but I would not take that risk for sake of saving $300-500, even if warranties is 1000 years, you still have to deal with the warranty process. Get a reputable brand and model from the start, saves alot of headaches and time.

And yet touch wood I've had no issues with the Hisense, yet we had by now on the old Samsung (the first time it died).

No such thing as reputable brand electronics any more. Just check Product Review and you'll see they all have issues.

We can all base our opinions on what we've seen/heard, and generally its's safe to say that the more you pay doesn't mean the longer it will last.

So you saying, its ok to buy a Great Wall instead of Toyota ?;)

How about Mitsubishi? 5 years parts and labour warranty on the fridge and 10 year parts warranty for the compressor for their inverter fridges.

    • Yes, looks very attractive from that point of view but no cool water/ ice on tap.

    Panasonic do some great fridges

    • Thanks. However, none of their models here seem to have plumbed cool water or ice.

I had a Westinghouse at my old place and it still works after 8 years but was noisy from the day we took delivery. I was recently in an Airbnb with a newer Westinghouse and it was noisy too.

Dad had a Mitsubishi fridge and it was great.

Just bought a new LG to go with new kitchen. We replaced an old LG that i had for about 5 years, that i got second hand, that never had a problem. both are just basic fridge freezers though. I guess the more features the more that can go wrong with it.

  • Has anyone seen fridges listed when Appliances Online has 20% sales on eBay?

    Thanks
