Unifi US-8-60W Managed 8 Port Switch (4 PoE Ports) $159.80 + Delivery (Free with eBay Plus) @ Wireless1 eBay

240
PLATEAU

So this is the cheapest price right now for this, cheaper than MWave and Kogan.

Strange thing is the non POE version isn't any cheaper so I guess it makes sense just to grab POE for flexibility.

Original credit should goto the OP of Plateau, I am just piggy backing.

these get very hot when in use, I have one and only use the POE feature on one port for a unifi lite AP so it's not overloaded at all, still very hot to touch, I've had to stand it on is side to allow the heat to escape through the vents… I absolutely love the unifi products, but had I known how hot it would get I wouldn't have bought it :(

I have one and theres a wonderful mod thats very easy to perform and will drop the temps 8-10deg C at all loads. Worked brilliantly on mine, i used 2x2mm pads. Credit to rkuo for the mod.

Mounting it upright with the cooling vents facing upwards also helps alot as you mentioned.

      • Mine gets super hot also (almost too hot to touch!). Like you, I love it, but a bit concerned about the heat. I might try the mod you linked.

Have you got a link for the pads you used?

        • +2

Wouldn’t let me post the link… just search ebay for 100x100x2mm Thermal Pad. Cost about $4USD and then had to cut them to correct size 60x60mm, I couldn’t find any at the correct 60x60 size, but scissors do it easy.

Took a while to arrive but didn’t bother me.

    • Probably need a fan with that heatsink

    • thats like all decent switches though. i got two HP fanless switches and the outsides get real hot - means the heat is being dissipated

      • +1

Looking at the internals, it's not designed to use the case as a heatsink. Don't think just because it's ubiquiti that it's well designed.

The youtube solution shown actually enables the case to work as a heatsink.

        • Correct, it uses the top case as a heat sink/dissipate. Works quite effectively though and there’s nothing else touching the top case section, I moved the cable in the vid.

    • What causes it to be so hot? Does it consume more power than what a typical POE switch does?

      • Small heat sink on the CPU when you look inside compared to the active cooled models, and obviously no fan in this one.

I have low RPM fan(spare fan from NH-D15) blowing into the switch and my router(also passive cooled pc) it able keep them under 50 degrees in summer.

      • I see D15 I positive vote

    • I read somewhere it is their design decision to run hot instead of run noisy.

But I agree - hot electronics always concerns me.

  • I miss using switches.

  • Yeah it does get quite warm…. I’m gonna stick the second one I’m ordering in my ceiling, so possibly a spare 120mm case fan over the whole unit might work? (I have those coming out my ears right now…)

    • Should work well.

Be careful… getting started on the Ubiquiti products can lead you down a path of Ubiquiti mayhem!

Speaking as someone with 12 Ubiquiti products in his house!

      Unifi all the things

  • no internal fan is the issue - using the case as a heat sink will still require good ventilation - a roof space in summer typically hits 50-60c on hot days - putting this up there is probably not a good idea

  • Why do you need this when you are only using the POE function other than showing off to your friends that you have somewhat enterprise network knowdge? You can get cheaper switch than this. Overkill for a home network.

    • +1

Can use the POE to power the Ubiquiti wireless AP's, I'm assuming that's what they are there for

    • +2

      You have nerdy friends.

My friends are not interested in PoE of my switches.

    • It’s also incredibly advanced for a managed switch too. With the Unifi controller you can VLAN tag specific ports and you get network insights etc

    • Turning off Ethernet flow control (PAUSE frame) is the main function in a home network, followed by hardware VLAN routing but I'm not sure if this switch does that.

      • It does, if that’s what I think you mean… you can tag one or more specific ports to be certain VLAN

        • VLAN tagging is not VLAN routing. VLAN routing is a Layer 3 function and according to this forum reply, none of the UniFi switches (from 2 years ago, including this model) are capable.

You can still route VLANs with a firewall or a router, only much slower. For home use it won't matter much.

NOTE: This is a GENERATION 1 switch which have tended to overheat…there are now Gen 2 switches starting to roll out that have MUCH improved thermal management although I don't think the 8 port one is out yet

    • I wonder what the pricing will be like or if it’s just a replacement

      • The prices I have seen on the slightly larger models have creeped up a bit due to the dollar (even though the pricing in the US has stayed the same). The new 2nd gen ones have a small screen at the front as well as completely redesigned internals.

Be aware though that these small switches may actually never get a gen 2 version. I've only seen the 16 ports and above to have been redesigned so if you want the cheapest unifi switches then these are actually very good value for money

        https://switch.ui.com/gen2/

        • Sounds about right since there’s more to be gained from gen2 with the larger switches and more greater to rack mount which these are not.
Maybe eventually, but for now it does the job and is cheap.
Resource wise it’s never about 50% memory or CPU in my busy home network so I’m ok

Thanks OP! Been waiting for an eBay promo that includes these for a while.

For anyone else interested, I also grabbed a USG as it's the same price.

    • It’s a truly amazing piece of kit too
