Broadlink devices allow you to control and set timers for any IR devices including air conditioners. App works away from home, and they work with alexa and google home. The mini is $33 on amazon at the moment.

    • +1

I have a broadlink, but to be honest sensibo just works a lot more simplistically. It also has temperature and humidity sensors. I use it primarily to control my kids bedroom temps.

I stopped using broadlink when one of the app update a few years ago broke my saved control layout and I never bothered to go back to it. But yes in terms of price you cannot beat broadlink.

    • +2

Yes, they seem to work ok with the app but very flaky with Alexa and Google Home from my experience.

      • Oh I don't have alexa or google home. I've used mine with Domoticz.

Its a pity the broadlink devices don't have temp and humidity sensors anymore. Though I don't really want my air conditioners automatically coming on, and they do a good job at hitting the targeted temperature already. I tried to "optimise" my lounge room air con using climate sensors and 'smarts', but it turns out it did sod all, because the air con does all that already.

I have 3 Broadlink RM Pro's and one Broadlink Mini, and rarely ever use the app and just use Alexa and turn either devices or whole rooms off and on with voice. Works great on all air conditioners, TV's, stereos, a fan, dvd player etc.

        • I too have one of these, and it rarely worked. Had to be power cycled every few days otherwise the scheduling stop working etc.
ended up putting in one of the $40 or things from Kmart and that works ok enough. Pretty reliable so far it’s just not 100% compatible with my AC so I’m thinking I might bite the bullet and get one of theses ones OP posted.

      • I have a Broadlink at work which I only use with Google Home through ihc. Since I set it up a few months ago, it has been rock-solid. Never failed once, never had to be restarted or anything. It just sits there and works every day.

    • Do you need one for each unit? Eg. One broadlink for TV in living room, one broadlink for aircon in bedroom?

      • Yes, because all these devices pretend to be IR remote controls. A normal IR remote can't work through walls, so devices like these can't either.

        • Thanks for clarifying.

    • I bought something similar from overseas for $15. A good replacement for the IR remote.

Sensibos aren't a whole lot better. If you want something sensor based and automated, spend a few more bucks and get an Ambi Climate. I have 4 and they work great. I can just leave the AI to do its thing all day.

      • I tried an AmbiClimate and it was rubbish (with my AC). Gave up on it. The Sensibo works great.

    • I went down the Broadlink route however still can't get my Broadlink RM4 Mini to connect to my Netgear Orbi mesh network that has the required 2.4ghz, I have other devices that require 2.4ghz that can connect, Sonos from memory so maybe people need to be careful with Broadlink if they have a mesh network.

    • The mini (both rm3 and rm4) seems to be cheaper on eBay (around $25). Any reason to purchase from Amazon at a higher price?

Isn't this just a fancy IR blaster?

  • +6

$139 is the regular price. Has been down to $99 and with 20% off Binglee come to $119 often.

Unless in rush, it is worth waiting for a better deal.

    • +1

This. Aim for $120ish. I’ve got two and love it (although HomeKit would be nice) but I wouldn’t be paying this much for a third. Maybe if they come down to circa $100 I’ll get a third just so it’s all managed in one app.

And for those who usually post isn’t it just an IR blaster- it is, but it has a few smarts like its own thermometer which can automatically trigger different settings, and the UI and google home integration is solid. I like building schedules and setting parameters for when to trigger actions within one handy app for both my wife and I to use in our bedroom and nursery. You could probably build a similar setup using other parts and IFTTT but I liked it all in one package and it works well for us.

      • I also use sensibo with flic through IFTTT, just convenient since I just stick a flic near a table and don't have to fumble for the remote to turn on and off the AC

    • Yeah i have seen Gen 1's selling for $99
But Gen 2 lowest i have seen is $139
Camel Camel Says lowest Gen2 has been on amazon is $139

But i am certain their are hacks to get them cheaper, I happened to need one now so was happy with a discount and thought i would share :)

        It's $128 @ good guys commercial

  • I have a small Panasonic split system (installed recently) do I need the OEM Wifi Adapter for this to work or will this Sensibo replicate do the same/ similar job?

    • +1

      https://au.sensibo.com/
scroll down and put your model number in the box and it will tell you if its compatible

    • +1

It will do the job fine as long as the remote uses IR. It's got a huge AC database, unless you have some noname obscure AC it will connect no problems. Just make sure when you set up turn your mobile data connection off.

    • OEM will be better. Pricing for OEM Mitsubishi wifi was $160 plus fitting (free fitting at time of install of the split system) so hard to justify a Sensibo. I only got the OEM fitted to one split system whilst my 3 others use Broadlink Blackbean Minis

      • That’s worth it for OEM. I was told it would be closer to the $400-500 mark per unit so that’s why I went with Sensibo.

      • Just make sure the OEM app is decent, and works with any other system you might require (Alexa, Google Home etc).

  • I've got an older in wall unit (no IR, analogue controls) that I want to add some smarts too. I was thinking of a smart power adapter, but the highest I can find is 10A and the unit is 15A. Any suggestions?

    • +1

Are you sure its 15 amp? Most of those older units I've seen just plug into a normal GPO. In AU the standard GPO is 10amp, a 15amp plug shouldn't fit into a 10amp socket, the earth pin is larger.

If it is 15amp, with a 15amp plug, then gee I've never seen a smart switch that wasn't 10amp.

    • I have the Sonoff TH16, which will do exactly what you want and is rated for 16amps. Uses the eWelink app and can be programmed to turn on at a certain temperature then turn off also. Just set analogue controls on ac. Works with Google home too.

The sensibo works fairly well (thought I do have issues with it from time to time) but the price is a bit too high considering the hardware…you are paying for the database and support much more than anything else…

    • Agree. The pairing process and quality is not on par with the price tag.

Does not support 5GHz WiFI networks

      • 2.4 GHz is more than enough for it's purpose. It needs signal range not throughout. 5ghz has poor wall penetration.

369 for 3x on their website if you needed 3. Works out to be $123/each

    • $249 + free delivery for 2 at Kogan/Dick Smith.
      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/sensibo-sky-smart-air-condition…

      $359 for 3, $459 for 4.

      • Damn ozbargain fail

        • Grey imported on Kogan.
Warranty issues from what I believe.

          • +1

@jimbobaus: Props to Sensibo. Realised I added white instead of black and emailed them middle of the night 12am. Replied straight away and swapped it for me.

bought then realised kogan was cheaper after this comment. Sent an email and they refunded the difference today.

            Impressed with the customer service.

  • My Daikin doesn't have IR; am i stuffed?

    • How do you turn it on and off?

      • finger click; it's a ducted and no remote controller

        • You're stuffed. ;)

You can get wifi controllers for ducted air conditioners, they cost more though.

          • @eug: i know; i thought i check

    • I have the same situation for remainder of house.thinking of getting a switchbot to automate the on/off button..

      • how much switchbot these days? last i check, they're still super expensive

        • Think it was about $100 for 4 last I checked. That might’ve been US though. But cheaper than fitting ducted WiFi keypad I guess and cheaper than a smart coffee machine..

  • These are great. I’ve got them working with HomeKit through Homebridge. Note, the temp sensor only gives you rounded to nearest 0.5 degrees on Home and Google apps. The Sensibo app gives exact temperature. Also the Home+ app on iPhone (what I use) gives exact temp and can set automations based on temp, etc.

  • Keen on these, but does the built in temp gauge let you view temperature over time? I.e. log it somehow?

That would make it easier to review conditions when fine tuning timers to come on/off etc.

    • I think only shows real time AFAIK.
