The what? I'm very confused about everything right now.

        • +2

Very simply, its an alternative to torrents

It's kinda used for same purpose torrenting is, you need a Usenet provider to download the files. Read more here if you're interested https://reddit.com/r/Usenet/wiki/faq

Got some files that were 3900 days old. It's like a time machine.

  • Does anyone know if the unlimited deal for 9 months adds to my current unlimited deal, as in making it cheaper for 9 months and then back to my current/usual price?

    • You should probably try contacting their support, I don't think there's a system like that in default but from what I hear their support is helpful.

  • Does the block plans work differently to unlimited? As in run on different retention or backbone?

I guess my question is.. Why would you select 4TB block when it's the same price as unlimited (besides the non expiry)

    • With Usenet you get an unlimited provider from a back bone and block accounts from seperate back bones, so if an nzb can’t be completed due to takedowns on one provider your block accounts can assist you in completing the download. If you’re looking for a provider then just ignore the blocks.

      • Yes, I get that..

        But..

So I guess the answer is, people are only using block accounts as backups. And paying for another unlimited provider for their primary access, instead of having multiple ongoing costs for multiple unlimited accounts.

Have I understood? Or got it completely wrong?

        • Yeah, to answer your original question it's because they already have an unlimited provider they are happy with.

Although I have heard of people that have 2 super cheap unlimited accounts going, this is a bit of an overkill usually though. Generally these block accounts will also last you a long time so a 4TB non expiring block is quite appealing if you're happy with your current unlimited provider.

        • I use a block accounts, (3 across different providersAstraWeb, NewsDaemon, BulkNews), as my main accounts now since I downloaded everything I wanted from UseNet more than 8 years ago - before then I had a UseNet account monthly for 15 years.

The ~3TB of block has lasted me that 8 years and there's still 2TB or so left.

It all comes down to how much you want to suck from UseNet …

  • Thanks, hopefully the 4th serves as a good alt to usenet.farm

  • I'm currently with Tweaknews but have found availability to be sorely lacking.

Can anyone confirm for sure (i.e. using this service) that this one is actually good?

Just that OP "They claim 4000+ days of retention, 50 SSL connections." is what THEY claim and I'd like to know if people using this service are actually able to grab all things they're after and have found availability is good.

    Thanks for all responses.

You'd have better luck asking on r/usenet but I believe TweakNews is NTD instead of DMCA so if you're having issues with them then this probably isn't that much better for you. I have grabbed some older stuff from Demon but ideally you want to use automation and grab stuff as soon as they are available if you're using usenet. If you want older content then private trackers are where its at. Perhaps look into Eweka, I've heard they have the best retention out of any usenet provider. Maybe you can grab them on a sale down the line this year.
