These were $599 at Costco a while back so may be worth checking there first.

    • They wouldn't be discount anytime soon, ppl buying them crazy.

  • +2

When an ordinary fan is $30 in Bunnings what’s justification for 20x? Genuinely curious.

    • I've been looking into air purifiers and this one is one of the best.

      • -1

Maybe check the comment below yours to see why this is probably not a good air purifier.

    • +3

      Air purification.

There are two other common purifiers for similar room sizes:
BREVILLE The Smart Air Plus Purifier LAP500WHT - $539
      Philips Series 2000 Air Purifier AC2887/70 - $529

      There are also Xiaomi

If you are looking for air purification then three good questions right now are:
      1. Do you need it?
      2. How soon do you need it? Stock availability in some places is really small right now
      3. Do you care about filter availability from local stores?

It is really hard to find air purifiers in some parts of the country right now.

There are cheaper choices, but if you really can't wait (exacerbated asthma) then this is a good deal.

I mean, you can't get deliveries in ACT ATM so…

You could do what I've done and strap a HEPA/Carbon filter to a $30 fan ;)

        • Yep, if you can find:
          1. Large particle filter
          2. Active carbon filter
          3. HEPA filter

Then strapping them together yourself to a fan is a good solution!

The roads are open but that may change.

@g1: It'd be harder now, since no AusPost. But I bought a HEPA filter and four carbon pads (30x30cm) for about $25 delivered from eBay (took about 4 days to rock up). My large particle filter is basically the flyscreen/fan lol.

            • +1

@TogTogTogTog: The no AusPost is official?
*edit: Found the official announcement: https://auspost.com.au/about-us/news-media/important-updates
need to send to parcel lockers

+1 for strapping it all together yourself :)
I wonder what would be needed to give it some sort of monitoring for when to replace the filters.

              • @g1: Carbon is apparently each month while HEPA is 3-6 and from what I've heard/seen most systems don't do monitoring, just a timer.

You could probably monitor the air quality over time and when it drops below a certain level flag a replacement.

I'm gonna eyeball it but don't really care as it's just a stop-gap until the smoke clears. Since I got four carbon pads though could probs replace it every week if I wanted, and at these levels might have to…

      • The two other common purifiers for large rooms with 'easy' local support are:
        TRUSENS Z-3000 - ~$530
Inovaair AIRCLEAN E20 PLUS AIR PURIFIER - $1595

        https://www.sensitivechoice.com/product-category/air-treatme…

  • For this price, a portable aircon is better?

    • For fair comparison the portable aircon would need to have activated carbon filter and a true HEPA filter. You could always attach those filters to the aircon yourself.

The other bonus about the 'smart' purifiers is that they indicate when to change filters and give you indication of air quality.

      • For a fair comparison the Dyson would have to cool the air rather than just being a fan. Totally different products with different uses and can’t really be compared at all.

  • Seen these at Hardly Normal, biggest waste of money I've seen for 2019. The air barely pushes for 2metres. Not good for a large open area.

    • As a tower fan yes its pretty mediocre but if you need clean purified air then these do a great job.

  • As an air purifier, not fan, is this as good as similarly priced stand alone purifier?

    Just ordered 20!

    I own this and a Xiaomi 2s

This has far, far better air quality reporting.

Its also safe around young children.

It is pretty noisy at full fan speed and yes its not as powerful as a fan as a normal fan - nevertheless for my usage case very good and considering getting another.

    • When you say "better air quality reporting", what exactly do you mean by this?

Trying to find an air purifier ourselves at the moment.

      Thanks mate.

      • +2

You have an app for both units

The app gives you various readings to determine air quality

The Dyson app gives a lot more detailed information than the Xiaomi 2s and it measures a number of pollutants that the Xiaomi does not.

As far as air quality reporting is concerned, the Dyson wins hands down.

Their app is also superior and doesnt require you to set your region to China for your device to work….

        • I would say the Dyson can only work as an air filter when its running as a fan. If you just want a purifier that may be annoying sometimes.

          • @aussietivoman: You can set the fan to shoot upwards (away from your face) And still act as a purifier.

            • @Aced21: I can't see how that is possible - there is no air outlet on the top of the unit?

              • @aussietivoman: Hmm, perhaps it was a different model that shoots upwards, but anywho, I was referring to the diffused mode where the airflow is much less but acts as what a purifier would. You would not use the diffused mode for cooling, that mode is mainly for the purification aspect.

              • @aussietivoman: There are outlets on the side of the oval outlet.

What purifier doesn't intake air and output it? I would think all filter based purifiers would create air movement. If the forward directional focused airflow is a concern then side outlets would work, or have it face the wall.

                • @g1: Yeah but the Dyson is setup to function as a fan - so it directs the air in one direction

At full power it blows air reasonably hard in one direction noisily - the Xiaomi is quieter and the air output isnt as focussed.

However having a fan and a purifier simultaneously can also be good and what it is designed to do/be.

    • That surprising.
The filter on the Dyson is a lot smaller than on the Xiaomi 2s. The Xiaomi should be better as air purifier.
The Xiaomi 2s isn’t HEPA. The Xiaomi 3 and Pro is HEPA.

These Dyson Purifiers are useless for bush fire smoke. There are no active carbon filters in them.

    • Hmmm based on my actual usage during the last 2 months, having the Dyson on makes a very material difference to the smell of the air in a room when bushfire smoke is quite heavy all around you.

I don't know the science of why an active carbon filter would be better, but I do know the Dyson does make a worthwhile and noticable difference to bush fire smoke…

      • -1

        I'm not a pro either but its better than nothing to have Dyson which has HEPA filter can remove most of the partials in air but you apparently you need active carbon filter which removes things you wouldn't notice or see which is bad for you such as;
VOCs such as Benzene, Toluene, Xylene, oils and some chlorinated compounds are common target chemicals removed through use of carbon. Other large uses for activated carbon are the removal of odors and color contamination.

So for the $600+ you can get a proper air filter which has both HEPA + Active Carbon filter.

        • These Dyson's do have active carbon filters. See video above.

    • +1

These Dyson purifiers have active carbon filters:
      https://www.dyson.com/support/journey/tools/969048-01.html

    • They do.

Shows how much filter life remains on both the HEPA and Active carbon fiters, so you know which one to replace, and when.

    • My bad, they do. pls remove my comment. Or leave it lol

  • One thing to bear in mind is that many of the reviews that I've read seem to suggest that purifiers with an automatic mode are unreliable because their sensors aren't accurate and often read the room air as clean when it isn't. The xiaomi purifiers seem particularly prone to this issue. Has anyone got evidence that the dyson's sensor is any better?

  • Fwiw, I've put these (Nordic Pure MERV Pleated AC… https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07P9FWK5L?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_s…) on top of one of my split system indoor units to cover the intake. (Measure your units and choose a size to fit) MERV13 is roughly equivalent to P2 from what I can tell. It's doing a decent job.

On some others, I've bought 3M filtrete paper off Amazon and lived the inside of the ac intake filters. That has also delivered a dramatic improvement in apparent indoor air quality.

  • Just an FYI, after I purchased the 04 model, I realised that a newer model has been released (at least in the US), the HP06/TP06.

From what I can tell, the differences are relatively minor but it does seem to have "Cryptomic™ technology" which "destroys formaldehyde". From a news site: "Formaldehyde is given off from things like paint, varnishes, air fresheners, furniture, household cleaners and even stuff as innocuous as dryer sheets and toys".

So if you are in the market for one, you may want to wait until the 06 is released even if you still want the 04 for a better price.

  • Just in case anyone is wondering whether CHOICE recommends these, they don't. This model gets less than 50% 'expert rating' and 'smoke removal score' (around 30% less smoke score than the currently recommended unit).

    • do you have a link ? please :P

      • You need to be a Choice member to view it

        • Take Choice with a gain of salt.

Check out video below for smoke testing results:
          https://youtu.be/CXL5NoX25XM

          • @motlking: Why do you think Choice review should be taken with a grain of salt as opposed to the video that you linked to?

    • Could you please post what they reviewed and what scores they have?
