  • Just so people are aware these only work if you have a current IOS level iPhone. You need to use the phone to set them up.

    • so phone needs to be on the most current fw e.g 13.3 ?

do you need phone to set it up though?

      • +2

You do need an iPhone to setup an Apple watch

      • +4

The Apple Watch Series 5 needs an iPhone 6s or later, running iOS 13 or later.

        • +1

          Wow good to know. Thanks!

        • The Apple Watch Series 3 also needs the same; for people who are contemplating buying one of those instead.

        • can you also use an ipad?

          • @pinkybrain: No, unfortunately. We had iPhone 6 technology and we thought we had a “get out of jail free” with our iPad pros; apparently not.

            https://www.businessinsider.com/does-apple-watch-work-with-i…

Now you need an iPhone 6s or later, you cant get the latest IOS for iPhone 6.

            • @try2bhelpful: ah that sucks if need a newer iphone that iphone 6 just to pair the apple watch…

just more money grabbing from apple

              • @pinkybrain: The phone is more for management than just pairing. I have no trouble with requiring compatible IOS for phone and watch but I’m also a bit miffed that the iPad wasn’t brought into the mix. Although the watch and phone are a better pair. Thought I would give people the heads up. The iPhone 6 is 4 years old now.

                • -1

@try2bhelpful: there should not be any technical reason why iPad can't be paired/use to manage the apple watch
since there are many ipads that can install ios 13.3 etc..

why apple watch and phone better paired?
all it does it use to manage or sync the data from the apple watch..

This is just apple trying get people with iphone 6 to upgrade (money grab)
instead of them being able to use their ipads to setup the apple watch

                  • +1

@pinkybrain: A lot of iPads, mine included, don’t have GPS or a SIM card. The watch acts as an extension of the phone. The apps track the training sessions, the distances and where the training session occurred and this can be viewed on the phone. I don’t have a SIM in my watch so the watch can do a “Dick Tracy” answering the phone, I can send messages from the watch, controlling music on the phone, etc.

I was annoyed as well but, now I’ve actually bought the watch, and the new phone to go with it. I can see why they are paired and I can see why the phone rather than the iPad.

I can also see why they are only supporting devices with the latest IOS.

  • I have an ebay plus, Can you use this to price beat with officeworks?

  • Or price beat with jbhifi or Harvey Norman?

  • Lowest price it’s been?

  • GPS are Gone! Only cellular ones available now.

  • IS it worth spending the extra money compared to a GPS Series 3 42mm?

    • Do you really need always on display? If not, No.

      • Screen is noticeably bigger on the 5 and it has also got a compass

        • -1

LOL is that the only difference?

          • -1

@saintpotter: also tracks your menstrual cycle lol.. cant remember what else

            • @DrMilan: My series 3 can also do that, not that I use it

              • +2

@aidhan: The screen of the 4 and 5 is a lot more polished compared to the older series - it has nice rounded corners just like the watch itself so it looks a lot less techie and feels more usable. For me, the new 40mm is the sweet spot: it has more screen estate than the old 42mm version and slightly more pixels. That means a less clunky watch on you wrist with more to see.

          • @saintpotter: Feel free to LOL, but Series 5 screen is 30% bigger than that of the Apple Watch 3 series

  • Moved.

  • +1

+1 on apple series 5, got a nike series 5 for christmas.. i love it.. no longer wear my gold diamond watch that was $7k however im a watch enthusiast so ill keep it

  • +3

IMO best value would be the Series 4 if you can find them for $400 to $500 new.

    • -2

Best value is series 3 (have been below $300), otherwise $100 more for 5 over 4 is a better choice (display, longer support, availability). Go for 4 only if it’s $400.

      • Best value is Series 0 or 1&2, if you can find them

      • +1

I’d say the difference between the 3 and 4 was much bigger than the 4 vs 5. In terms of display, the only difference with the 5 is the always on part (which I personally like). I wouldn’t recommend getting the 3, I’d go for a 4 (if you can find one at a good price) or straight to the 5.

    • Agree. Have a 4 and the difference between a 3 is quite big, whilst the 5 pretty much just added always on display.

  • has any1 received it yet?
