Credit Card for NZ Citizen Resident in NZ

I am resident in NZ, with all of my assets and income being in NZ. However, I regularly travel to Australia - sometimes for extended periods.

I want to get an Australian credit card, ideally to access purchase protection and perhaps a signup bonus or interest-free period.

Are there any credit cards in Australia that could reasonably easily be obtained by a New Zealand citizen (if I was able to provide an Australian address and phone number). Thinking ones where no proof of income is required (as my income is in NZD).

Not sure about measures of proof needed. However I was an Aussie living in NZ, I found ANZ had been changing it's banking to allow transfers and spending between the two and they mentioned in the future would basically be the same entity? Maybe that has now occured with ANZ, possibly even West Pac?

A credit card with no income proof - so you want to essentially borrow money without someone asking you source of income (to pay them back)?

I will be very surprised if something like this exist.

Being a NZ citizen should not be a problem (eligibility) - https://www.anz.com.au/personal/credit-cards/rewards/travel-…
and income from overseas should be the bank's decision.

Best way to know about it is to apply for one

No proof of income… I LOLd hard at this.

  • Banks won't accept your NZD proof of income? Why not?

    • Because the chances of default are sky high with no economical remedy to recover a debt in this situation?

A few comments here suggesting it is audacious to apply for a credit card w/o proof of an (Australian) income. Fair points, and I certainly wouldn't begrudge a prudent lender who wants to know if I can pay it back.

OTOH, I've signed up for over 11 cards in NZ in the past two years - and at least three of those did not ask for proof of income (two non-bank lenders and one bank). I presume that with the poor conduct of banks in Australia in recent years, there's got to be a few opportunities on your side of the ditch too.

So, if any Ozbargainers know of any cards that either:
    - don't require proof of income; or
    - don't require Australian residency and take New Zealand income into account -
    that would be great.

    • there's got to be a few opportunities on your side of the ditch too.

Unlikely. All lending practices have been severely tightened up.

Boo. I called Amex yesterday for a retention offer, and was initially told no due to the 'new regulations'. I pushed a bit further, then they realised I wasn't an Australian cardholder and promptly offered a retention bonus. Sucks to be y'all.

    • You are a decade too late. When I was at Uni 10 years ago, I got five different cards without proof of income (Woolworths Platinum, Amex, Virgin Money, Wizard/28 Degrees and Anz) with a combined credit limit of about 60k. There's no way that would happen now. Your best chance would be Amex, but I see they've already rejected your application.

  • Not guaranteeing that they won't ask for your income but I find amex is quite loose with their requirements. Last time I applied for the qantas amex card (which btw is double sign up bonus at the moment i think) they didn't ask for any income documents.

I was a little surprised considering the credit limit they gave me but you could try amex? They may or may not ask you for your income. Good luck.

Got asked for income verification - so looks like my lack of a credit history may have triggered that.
