    $10 cents, mind = blown

  • "$10 cents per little", what the ?
I think you mean 10c per litre.

  • Litre (not little) I assume. And 10 cents not $10. Might be worth changing the title to avoid confusion.

Most baffling title I've ever seen on here. Kudos to you for making my brain explode!

Real Ozbargainers run on Diesel coz it goes further. No Diesel = No bargain

    • +2

True that. My Turbo Diesel Focus gets 30-40% better economy than it's Petrol brother.

    • Real OzBargainers use LPG. Currently 61c/L where I live. Petrol equivalent price to go the same distance is 70c/L. Neither Diesel nor petrol comes close.

This e10 petrol will ruin your car for sure. Would not buy.

    • +1

There's nothing wrong with United E10, I used it for years in my previous car.
You just need to ensure that your car is suitable for running on E10:

      • +16

most cars can, but it's well known that it's
        1) not too great for ur engine in the v.long term
        2) worse than petrol for carbon footprint
        3) in general not good for the environment

the only reason it's being legislated is because
        A) it's renewable
        B) few know about points 2 & 3
        C) politically it's a winner

        • +2

cannot upvote furyou enough on this. E10 is the biggest furphy in the history of environmentalism.

        • i think you are missing the point here…. it's RENEWABLE!

a 10% blend is 10% more oil in the ground to use later (and delay the inevitable oil crisis that looms ahead of us).

        • +4

UFO you are correct but the invisible costs of E10 include much higher land usage and all the water, nutrients etc for that crop. The land has to come from somewhere - either by sacrificing natural forest (which is more effective than a fuel crop in extracting carbon from the air as well as providing habitat for animal and plant species), by sacrificing already-tilled land that could otherwise be put to better use (eg. food), or by irrigating poor quality land (which results in great environmental strain eg water use and power, usually provided by burning black oil!). Put simply we are better off using that land for natural forests, or for food, and just use the dinosaur juice that we have available now if we really do need oil/fuels.

        • Hey did you know that the price of CORN rose significantly higher, people in middle-east (and other parts of the world) who depend on corn and corn related breads and can only just survive the previous costs of corn, now find themselves very insecure?

Also, WHO DOESN'T LIKE EATING CORN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

        • Can I add to the only reason E10 was legislated is because
          A) it's renewable
          B) few know about points 2 & 3
          C) politically it's a winner

          D) The only supplier in the country (it's a monopoly and John Howard's mate) was wise enough to contribute to both the Libs and Labour kitty so he's got it covered both ways.

There's nothing wrong with running E10, just like there's nothing wrong with eating margarine.

Fact is , my fuel consumption increased when I'm using E10 as well as the car starts to behave like a slug. In the end, I am paying less because I am getting less fuel in the mix, and with a negative impact to car response.

IMO, It's good if you are travelling long distances with RPM approx 2k.

      • im not arguing any of the points you've made mate, completely agree.
takes up land, rises food prices, uses water, bla bla bla… but all of that is renewable, and thats the point I was making.

E10, for all its flaws…. is renewable.
Fossil fuel isnt, and one day will run out no matter how much water, land, etc it takes to 'grow it'.

  • Filling must be commenced after midnight Friday and before 12am Saturday to be eligible for the discounted price
    wtf!

    • 12am Saturday makes no sense at all. They must mean before 12:00:01 am Sunday, or until 12 Midnight Satuday.

      • It's definitely poorly worded

00:00:00 - 23:59:59 Saturday would be much more useful

        • yer, you're right. It's midnight friday - midnight saturday. 24 hours.

    • Hahaha, yep, that is one narrow window of opportunity.

Actually, 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. are terms best avoided. From Wikipedia:

Since the Latin word meridies means noon or midday, it is illogical to refer to noon as either "12 a.m." ("12 ante meridiem", or "12 o'clock before noon") or as "12 p.m." ("12 post meridiem", or "12 o'clock after noon"). On the other hand, midnight could logically be called either "12 p.m." (12 post meridiem, 12 hours after the previous noon) or "12 a.m." (12 ante meridiem, 12 hours before the following noon); "x a.m." no longer means "x hours before noon", but the x-numbered hour before noon.

    • You have 1 second to fill :).

That's pretty smart marketting… after midnight on friday night, but before 12am Saturday… better have a stop watch :).

  • It is 10c/l off Ethanol Petrol on Saturdays.
Is it Saturday? If it is, your Ethanol petrol is 10c/l off. No need for strange military time or anything, it's just Saturday.
I still won't be getting it, since ethanol costs roughly 10% more per km than regular 91 Octane anyway , and probably isn't too good for your engine to boot.
Remind me again why we have this crazy tax exemption for ethanol?

    • E10 costs 4% in efficiency
thus this may be a good deal if u don't count the costs of wear on your engine

      • +1

don't forget your fuel pump, fuel lines, injectors etc etc.

        • +1

dont forget about the children…. oh please will someone remember the children! ;)

    • ethanol costs roughly 10% more per km than regular 91 Octane anyway

      source?

      • I have to agree.
I see the same in our two cars as well.
We pay less for e10 over regular, but we consistantly do less km's on e10.
        Anyone else notice this?

        • Looking at other forums/discussions it seem that you are not the only one.

      • http://www.biofuels.nsw.gov.au/biofuels_faq/e10_fuel_economy claims 3-4% under ideal conditions. My Mileage app tells me 6-9% for my 2002 Toyota Echo as against regular 91 Octane. 95 Octane is about 1% cheaper per km based on my last 10 fillups (but obviously small fluctuations in driving pattern wipe that out)
In any case, try it out yourself. There seems to be reasonable variation across car models.

And let's not even start on BOAT engines !!!

  • Now to see if petrol goes up in price everywhere on friday…

  • I suggested that they fix the wording for the start/end times. They've fixed it up already and replied saying thanks :)

    Now that's good service!

Edit: Maybe not as well as expected. They still have midnight Friday. Time to send another email later.

even if the regular cost of E10 was 10 cents a litre, i wouldn't put that in my car. it's the devil's fuel

    • -1

Damn straight. I even put 95 vortex in my 1970's Victa mowers. Not kidding.

  • Everyone missed the main point - they choose what is currently the most expensive day of the fuel cycle to run this special, so in fact they are losing absolutely nothing since the highest day is usually at least 15 cents higher than the lowest day so you are still losing 5 cents anyway than if you just bought on the cheapest day …

    total crap !!!

    • It depends on where you are. Saturday's the cheapest day in Sydney.

      • +2

Actually there hasnt been any cheap day pattern over the last few months. Its kept changing. This week its been Tuesday and Wednesday (today). I look at all the rates for all petrol pumps twice a day all the way from Baulkham Hills to Brookvale (NSW) 5 days a week and check out some petrol pumps on the weekends, and there has been no consistency in what the cheap day should be.

        • Agree with this. I have noticed this for the last year or so actually. Really frustrating.

        • True there hasn't been a real cycle you can bank on each week for many months now but usually they always manage to get it back to the highpoint on the weekend. whether the low is on a tuesday or a friday , pretty much 20c higher by the Saturday.

I saw 126.9 (incl 4c discount) this morning but will bet by Saturday it will be back to at least 138.9, probably a little higher

        • Well it's 130.9 at Wollies Caltex in Sydney today (Fri evening) for E10.

        • It's still 130.9 at Wollies Caltex in Syd at 1pm Sat.
Great deal by United to be discounting on the cheapest day of the weekly cycle!

        • It worked out to be 120.9c/l here on the Gold Coast today.
Regardless of the facts, this is OzBargain and for E10 @ United, this is the cheapest i've seen in a very, very long time. Thank you OP.
BTW, I regularly fill with BP Ultimate, and see 10%+ mileage gain compared with E10.

        • It's back to 148.5c today (Sun) at 10am, start of the cycle in Syd. It's been this way for the past year.

      • it's cheap today at 1.28/L for E10 after 4cents at the shells.. but I wouldn't touch it anymore still trying to burn off whatever it's left in my tank…

        • well I was right… of course …

I filled up this afternoon at 124.9 and by the time I got home tonight everywhere was 144.9, just in time for United's DEAL hahaha

so you will be still be paying 10c more per litre than I just paid a few hours ago …

    • Still good for those who missed out on the cheapest day, or have planned a trip or lots of driving for that Saturday.

    • I hate the petrol companies as much as the next guy, but I think its not the stations that get the profit from the expensive days but actually the wholesaler. The retailer makes a steady 3cents no matter what the price is.

  • this is self defeating. saturday is one of the more expensive days of the week to fill up (in melbourne) given the current trend http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/860637. (well techinically its about half way, but i suspect it will move up in the next few weeks to being one of the most expensive).

But anyways, by buying on the cheapest day + 4c shopping voucher you should be able to achieve at least the same savings.

EDIT: sorry didn't see the above post lol. but some extra info at least :)

    • melbourne has rolling days now I've noticed, every week the cheapest day gets moved 1-2 days so its hard to figure out if you're filling up on the cheapest day anymore.

  • always excludes WA… we just get left out :(

  • E10 Is the biggest fraud i have ever seen !! The claim that u save 10% of oil is total crap. I have tested e10 in 3 cars many times and found it to reduce efficiency by between 8-13% (mainly city driving) this is backed up by many sites only, just research it. Avoid the people who benefit from it its web sites. If its 10% less efficient your oil use is the same and u need to refill more often so use more oil going to refill. U save just 3c so around 2% and u use 10% more so total loss is 8%. I find regular the best value but if i can't find it i get 95 anything is better value than e10. - Just found this on bing: http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/articles/2008/12/13/12285851…

There city test found a 7.2% reduction in efficiency. My car was more.

    • That's remarkable, as E10 contains at most 3% less energy than petrol. You're losing between 8 and 13% efficiency.

  • marketing gimmick by today tonight

  • meh…. all the haters of E10 today will be begging for it tomorrow when black gold texas tea runs out (or costs 5 times as much) :).

i dont buy E10 because of the environment or because of the false ecomony of 'saving money'. I get it because every time i use E10 I'm using 10% less fossil fuel. More in the ground now means more to use later.

    • +1

the 10% you are using 'less' isn't actually 'usable' fuel if you think about it. it's like diluting your scotch with water, it's drinkable still, but doesn't (negligible imo) get you any further. ;)

    • +1

      1) It's definitely less than 10%, as others have pointed out.
      2) There is much more to the environment than just the amount of fossil fuel in the ground and the amount of carbon in the air.
      3) In the absence of other problems, E10 might be a viable means to delay (but not prevent) running out of fossil fuel. But, see 2.

    • I use E10 as well, but my dual fuel LPG car burns LPG about 90% of the time. Australia is self sufficient in propane and butane. We export our surplus to other nations. We're a net importer of oil used to make petrol and Diesel, and it's getting worse every year. We passed our peak of oil production in 2000.

80% of LPG is extracted from gas fields, 20% is a byproduct of petrol refining. The best environmental and economical choice is to convert to LPG where possible.
