Scam Mobile Call from DHL?

Is this a new type of scam?

Google reveals nothing.
Got a call from a mobile number 0499XXXXXX.
Didn't answer
Left voice mail
"Hello this is DHL, you have an urgent express package that needs to be collected, for Chinese press 9"

Press nothing and Chinese spiel starts,
Call back and it goes to "please leave a 10 second msg" generic voicemail intro

Really weird

    Nope, old.

I have been getting the same message for almost a year now

    • so whats the actual scam?

      • +1

Probably to just ask for your personal information so that they can "confirm" your identity

        • fair enough! thought it was more sophisticated:)

          how disappointing!

just curious, are scammers able to transmit virus or anything from us accepting a call from them?

        • Not if you don't do anything further.

  • I just got this the other day myself; prefix was 0460

    • I got 07) 08) 04xx) and Private https://www.sbs.com.au/news/the-feed/scammer-reveals-all-ins… punishment of the phone scam crime is not heavy in Taiwan

    • follow up, I actually press 9, and talked to them. Asked them why Taiwanese like to run scam calls. They hanged me up and now they keep prank calling me every 30 minutes to 2 hours. I got 5-6 calls today.

  • Same

  • Not weird at all.

A simple Google search reveals all you want to know from a DHL canadian site

    Search -

Hello this is DHL, you have an urgent express package that needs to be collected, for Chinese press 9

answer - (ironic, it's the first post in google under the link to this thread)

If you have received a suspicious call advising you of a DHL Shipment or Delivery but without specifying a 10 digit DHL tracking or airway bill number, DHL recommends that you take the following action:

Do not provide further information especially if it is from an automated caller.
You may be prompted to press a key to indicate a certain option, such as to speak to a live person or to be taken off the call list. Do not take further action.
Discontinue the call immediately if it seems suspicious.
Please report receiving fraudulent or suspicious DHL calls to The DHL Fraud Department

  • Quite a common scam such that when I did actually receive a bonafide call from DHL for my package, I was initially and unnecessarily combative with the DHL rep.

Just got this same message "Hello this is DHL, you have an urgent express package that needs to be collected, for Chinese press 9".

I am actually waiting for an international DHL parcel at the moment (who isn't, right?), though it was not DHL Express.

There was no number to press for "English" or way to proceed if you did speak English, which seemed ridiculous, so I pressed 0 to try for the operator, got connected to a guy who said "Ni How", and promptly hung up when he realized I didn't speak Chinese.

So, definitely a scam aimed at netting native Chinese speakers, probably using scare tactics to do with their temporary visas.

  • Just got this call too from 0444 874 554. Pressed nothing and it hung up after a while.

  • Yeah, got this one too.

  • just copped one too with a different mobile number and a foreign language mentioning (presumably chinese) mentioning DHL, creepy stuff.

  • I got one too from 0412 363 164, same message about DHL final notification press 9 for chinese. Also waiting on a TOLL delivery!

Guys I got the phone call again. This time from 0421701114 and I have a recording, but I pressed 9 before it told me to do anything. It just cut me off… Damn, I wanted to get more information about this scam.

  • just got the same
    0417844897

  • Just got the same call on both my work and personal mobiles. The number was different each time, 0435672564, 0421806096.

  • Just received the same call. Number that dialled me is 0482514201. I regret answering it now, coz they use this to confirm an active number and now I'll be getting spammed more.

  • Got one few mins ago. Was just about to hang up & the robot voice say something about "this is DHL international…" then I straight hang up. Saw the number, dang why did I pick it up?

    0450 051 599

  • I just got the same call from 02 6733 5966.

I did nothing (didn’t press 9) and the call hung up.

  • Just had the same call from 0440 847 536.

  • Just got this on 0489 498 616

  • I got a call on 0411 685 091

  • I had this left as a voicemail as I missed the call. Pretty funny getting a voicemail message telling me to press 9 for Chinese! Number was 0403239421

  • I just got a call and it displayed the number, I picked up and it went through the same "This is DHL…" so i hung up. Called back the number and it was someones actual number and they claimed to have no idea what i was talking about.
Search of the number also suggests links to in belonging to a legitimate person.
    Did anyone else call back?

  • Just got the same call from 0480 468 388.

I'm assuming they are trying to target people who speak Chinese of some sort so they can scam.

    My 2c guesstimate.

Possibly the Visa extortion program or recruiting for Powder Milk buying programs?

  • My relos been getting robocalls/voicemails straight up in Chinese mentioning DHL, getting annoying

  • Got this call this morning. 0417 124 958

  • just got it from 0448-098-672

  • Got calls from 0468 787 289 and 0451 579 643, also called DHL in Sydney - they are aware of this weird scam and are not related. Not sure why this is linked to their Page on ozbargain.

Here is my voicemail recording https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hXjgzyNC4f05NvV3dyCO6fP-PID…

  • I have been getting these every few days. If I miss the call and try to call back it says the number is not connected, they leave a voice message each time. Last one was 0486941092

Got three calls today.. so lucky..

    02 5701 5543
    0462441019
    02 6228 9806

reported Scams every time i got the call…

    • same here, three calls from them today, I usually only hear from them once in a while but lately it's like at least once in every few days, makes me hesitant to answer the phone or listen to my voicemails.

  • I am wondering if they target users who exposed their numbers somewhere or everyone randomly.
Could it be a db leak from AliExpress, WeChat etc?

I hate these calls, so annoying!!! They call through a different number each time. I wonder if it's happening more now that they know people are likely ordering more parcels online due to covid. I pity the people who got scammed : https://www.sbs.com.au/news/the-feed/student-loses-500-000-i…

I'd say so, I just got it from 0412 582 961 with "emergency express" instead of "urgent express".

Guessing the rest of it would be the same as I hung up as soon as I heard DHL emergency express.

The last thing I got online was 6 - 8 weeks ago (excluding steam games and a kindle ebook) on ebay from a buyer i've been buying from for a few years, never used any of those Chinese sites so who knows where they get the number from.

      • Maybe from mygov then?

  • And/or just randomly calling numbers, in sequential order / in batches (the "old" definition of robo-calling). Sounds as though there are several 'groups' running this scam simultaneously.

I've noticed them (these DHL scams) coming through on different mobile numbers in the family, some that aren't publicly shared / used, and from different "source" numbers around the world, hence I think some groups are just calling number ranges with this scam.

Had another one this morning… (Don't say anything to them, just hang up straight away)…

  • Nothing to do with AliExpress Banggood. The scam calls are operated by Taiwanese. It is a pretty well known fact, because the punishment in Taiwan is low even if these scammers are caught. And they speak Mandarin, too. So that's why you see them targeting Chinese speakers. See the report from SBS https://www.sbs.com.au/news/the-feed/scammer-reveals-all-ins…

  • Got one recently. Hang up & blocked.
