Eurail Pass Incorrect Name Question

Hi Guys,

Basically, when I purchased a Eurail pass I incorrectly put my name instead of my brother's. Despite that I have gotten the pass 2w ago, I just realised it now when I was clearing my email and saw the receipt from Klook.
The pass only state the Last Name and the initial letter of the first name. Hence, only a letter difference (mine starts with J, his starts with E)
I was just wondering if this is going to be an issue upon activating the pass in Europe?

E.g my brother's was supposed to be Lee,E but since I mistakenly put my name, it becomes Lee,J.
Other than that, I put the DOB and gender correctly.

Thanks in advance.

(Also, I've already purchased my own pass hence I can't use this pass)

  • Generally, they just check that you filled out the current trip in the log. If you are travelling together I'm sure you could explain and they would accept the explanation. There is only a slight risk it's a problem but if you have time maybe get it cancelled and re-issued before you go.

    • Thank you! Another question, when travelling to another country with the night rail, will they reserve your passport till the next day? Thanks.

      • They took our passports for the night. when we were travelling from Venice to Paris. something with crossing the Swiss border.

    • WRONG.

you need to activate the railpass before using it.

I needed to show my passport when I activated my Eurail pass for the first time so you may have an issue.

I found out later that Eurail is utter trash though, so your name mess up will probably be the least of your worries.

There are some trips you will have to book well in advance. This is not helpful if you are wanting a holiday where you "go as you please". The website gives the impression you can hop on whenever you want. I ended up having to catch a bus through a few countries as there were no available seats on any of the needed trains for over a week.
You cannot book trips on the app, unless they've updated/overhauled it. You need a browser, and the mobile browser often gave me troubles, so I needed a computer. (I did have my laptop)
Some bookings cannot be done through Eurail, and they direct you to a third party website. This third party website then needs to mail you paper tickets that take 7 days to get to you.

Good luck, the next time I go to Europe, I'll just buy individual tickets as I go, I have a feeling it works out cheaper too, instead of the unlimited ticket I got.

    • Dang, so it won't work like the Japan rail? The price for Eurail is quite pricey too.

      • There were a few trips I took, sub 60 minute, local trains that let me jump on similar to the JR Pass, (Which I have used and found it to be F A N T A S T I C) but other than that, I found the Eurail pass useless and frustrating. It put a downer on my 6 weeks in Europe. Sorry to tell you this stuff, it's just my experience which I wouldn't recommend. It could be that I struggled because I'm an idiot too, so don't forget that.

        • Lol I'm clumsy asf too (hence the post), but thanks a lot for the insight!

Not my experience at all. Never had an issue getting seats, only booked in advance once for a long trip because I wanted to be sure to get the first-class seats. Would have got them without the booking so never bothered again. However, I wasn't there in peak season, my trip was Oct, Nov, Dec.

I’ve never had issues with using Eurail passes, and we’ve used them for several trips. You do need to book seats for some international, TGV and sight seeing trips for e.g. Switzerland. Eurail is no different to plane trips, if it is a popular route then you need to book a seat well in advance. That said for the less popular routes we just hopped a previous train if we got to the station early. The thing to also keep in mind is that prebooked seats can be cheaper at less popular times so early morning trains can be cheaper. Do a bit of research for busy travel times.

I suggest you look at the man in seat 61 website.

  • seat61.com makes it easy to do all the planning. all the info you need is on there.

  • I'd contact Klook to get a name change on that Eurail pass.
