Mine says $699 in the email…. typo?

    • Me too.
      Same code as well

    • +3

      Yes it is $699

  • +1

I would grab this, but 6.7" is too large for my requirement.

I need something as capable, but 5.5"-6".

    • +13

Sounds like you need to check out the s10e.

      • +3

really good phone and the lack of 5G at this stage is unimportant.

  • Apparently the camera isn't very good, but otherwise looks the goods for its segment I guess. For me the screen would be the selling point.

    • +6

If the camera is no good, them absolutely nothing separates it from budget high-end phones.

You're better off buying the Mi 10 locally, or the OnePlus updates later in the year.

      • +6

You're quite right. I wouldn't buy it at all. I personally don't see the value in the higher end A-Series phones and would look those options you mentioned.

        P30 Pro owner here.

        • @click_it, are you happy with p30pro? I saw a video where it constantly says "steady the camera…." in other words, it's slow. Is that true? I think what I'm referring to is basically called "shutter lag" - the time between pressing and it actually taking the photo.

          • +1

@muppet: I think you may mean exposure, which is the amount of time the shutter is open to allow more light though in low light conditions. If you don’t keep it steady, you’ll end up with blurry shots. So it’s not necessarily slow if it’s a dark scene.

          • @muppet: I'm very happy with it. Do you mean the message "Sharpening… Steady your device" when taking photos?
That's the shutter speed. At first I thought I was doing something wrong but I'm quite steady when taking photos and they are indeed very clear so I just ignore that. But you can go into Pro mode and change to 1/125 speed which apparently fixes it. I haven't tried yet.

So I'm very happy with the camera and the battery which is worlds beyond anything I've ever owned. I've only run the battery dead once in a 24hr period. I usually end the day over 50% with light-medium use.

On the flip side I hate curved screens. The way I hold the phone… I hope this fad of curved screens comes to an end soon. Huawei are going sharper curves so I may not buy another Huawei solely for that reason. I am otherwise extremely happy.

            • @Click_It: Yep, I have never owned a curved screen phone, but I'd imagine it's a bit annoying to hold / use. One point for S20+ (having a flat screen), however it's currently at a premium price.

        • No, I did not mean shutter speed. I'm quite familiar with what shutter speed, aperture, etc mean, since I use DSLR in manual mode all the time for landscape photography. I meant shutter LAG. When there's a big lag, you press the "take photo" button, and a few hundred milliseconds later, it took the photo. When your subject is moving (e.g. a toddler running around), you'll miss the moment you wanted to capture. IDK, maybe it is somehow related to shutter speed? But my experience is the lag seems to be caused by the camera trying to achieve focus prior to taking the shot, and probably also because of slower cpu. I have an LG V20 right now and it sometimes suffers from such lags.

Sometimes my phone also very annoyingly refuses to take the shot, I mean I'd rather a blurry / out of focus shot rather than a missed shot, but the damn thing doesn't want to take the shot.

          • @muppet: That's one thing the Samsung s series phones do right. Photo takes the instant you click, sometimes it seems to do a pre buffer so you get a clear shot of the action even if you clicked it off slightly late

          • @muppet: Ah I'm with you. Yeah there is a minor delay (not always instant unfortunately) however ironically I came from an LG V20 which was woefully laggy in the end, like 5 seconds laggy so overall I am happy. My V20 got overheated one day and was never the same since. Your lucky if yours is still good. Otherwise a good phone, I miss wide angle front lens.

            • @Click_It: Aw bummer about the lag. The wifi just stopped working on my LGV20, I suspect it's a hardware problem. I read something about Samsung claiming zero lag, but I haven't looked further.

        • Thanks for info. Dying for transfer speed I am vying for a P20 in 5G. Do you think this might be regretful?

  • It seems like it doesn't have a USB charger but something different as mentioned in the reviews on JB's website. Anyone out here know more about the charger?

    • +2

From what I can tell reading the reviews it just means the other end plugs into the wall not a std USB. Any $3 purchase of an aftermarket USB C cable will solve that.

    • +2

      USB c to usb c

  • Thanks OP great deal

  • Would this or the S10e for 599 (if still available) be the better option upgrading from a Galaxy Note 8?

    • +3

      I reckon S10e

      • Ok thanks. Hopefully can still get the 599 price.

    • +2

Coming from a Note 8, the S10e is pretty small. I would suggest you first try it out in a store beforehand.

      • +1

Yeh I tried s10e in store and while nice it felt like a bit on the small side if you watch alot of content.

Saying that it probably doesn't matter much just hold it a bit closer, maybe less comfy for dual apps.

      • Thanks, I tried and yes, it was small compared to the Note 8 but at 599 was very hard to pass up. I figure I'll get used to it and can always use my Note for media consumption if I want to.

  • Weight 206g. A bloody brick, and agree with above comments, why do such an expensive mid range. Just go with the better established existing model mobiles around similar prices or a bit less… IE a year or so old flagships

    • +3

I have a 200g phone it's really not that bad and I have small girl hands

  • +1

Does this have all the 5G bands?

    Edit: Found the bands.

    5G band 41(2500), 78(3500); Sub6

Is anyone familiar with 5G bands, is the above good?

    • +4

At this time I wouldn't take 5G (or its absence) into consideration.

    • +1

Suprisingly the Australian models only got Sub6 bands and does not support mmWave (the better 5G that other countries models got). So if you wanted 5G in the future it's not really worth it.

In saying this I have the A90 5G and turn off 5G because battery life is so much better and there's little practical use for 5G.

      • Thanks OP. Can you please tell us on how speed drops with distance to a 5G tower? I have 3 5G towers to lock on to but nearest is a few 100m away.
My TPG 100 has replaced all my sleeping pills!

  • What do people think about the a90 vs a71? I'm not really interested in the cameras or 5G, just after processor performance and battery life.

    • +1

Cameras are better on A71, but the processor is slower.

Battery life on both phones is apparently great.

A71 is the newer of the two, and to be honest day to day performance would be similar despite the difference in processor.

I'd go for the A71. It's lighter and slimmer thatn the A90, and in my eyes has the better display (punch hole vs 'U' for camera).

      • thanks for the insights!

    • +1

A71 owner here. Managed to grab it for $650 through an Australian eBay seller and got $50 off in promotion. Battery life is fantastic, I get about a 1 3/4 days out of it with web browsing/Facebook. Processor performance is pretty good for what I use the phone for but I haven't really put it through its paces. Plus, if there's any issues, I can just drop down to one of those pop up Samsung stores for support. Pretty happy with it.

Mid range A is very good value. A50 on sale for example. High end A is a hard sell. Why does it exist?

    • Agreed. Samsung really overcrowds the market, no different to Nvidia of late too.

      • If you're referring to the NVIDIA Super series, they basically discontinued all the competing GPUs. Essentially their yields increased better than expected, and they just marketed it as a rebrand.

You'll struggle to find stock of the 1660 Ti, 2070 and 2080.

        • I know why it happened, it's more that they felt the need to cover every single price point in the market, along with the competition of AMD too..

To all the people who don't follow the segment closely, they'd just go in store and see dozens of seemingly identical things.

Was just nicer even the previous generation with a more limited release…. which all changed with the 1030 fiasco.

          • +1

@scuderiarmani: Probably a strategy to try and confuse buyers. Information about GPU performance has become more transparent with YouTube, reviews and what not. Flooding the market with models to muddy the waters for average folk who don't follow developments.

            • @Top G: exactly, for all of us that understand where to find info, all well and good, but yeah the average consumer would think hmmmm this or a just get a Playstation….

              • @scuderiarmani: I would think it's pretty easy to find a benchmark chart, or ask a shop assistant what the difference is. I mean the naming scheme meets a test of basic logic, so you're basically assuming people are dribbling idiots who can't type into Google.

And again, you will find that most stores will not stock those GPUs any more.

The real problem is how the card manufacturers split up their product stack, with 3 or more shrouds for each SKU. It just gets unruly and I doubt it really saves them much money in their design and manufacture costs. There's your comparison with the A90, not how NVIDIA designs chips.

                • +1

@jasswolf: You over estimate people that don't care for tech.

                  • -2

@scuderiarmani: I think I'm overestimating your ability to read my post; I covered this.

                    • +1

@jasswolf: How many people on this site alone ask questions that could easily be Googled easier? These are people who still took the time to sign up to a forum…. like I said, you severely overestimate people. Most people have absolutely no idea who NVIDIA or AMD are, let alone the differences between a given GPU. They wouldn't even realise benchmarks exist…

                      • @scuderiarmani: You're still focusing on one avenue of enquiry. I covered others, including the tugging of sleeves, and exercising the ability to read the two boxes and recognise the meaning of the additional word 'Super' and see larger numbers on the specifications on the box.

There are enough breadcrumbs and obvious resources, even if someone doesn't want to even try asking the question on a search engine, which is a low bar that I've set. Agree to disagree if you think most people won't bother before spending $300+ on the stuff.

                        • @jasswolf: I've had countless family and friends buy the first thing they see, especially computer related.

Had one wanting to buy a Monitor at Harvey Norman, told them to go to MSY for 1/3 the price…. Had another building a full system…. Spent $1000-1500 more then necessary for lower performance…..

                          Many don't research.

                          • @scuderiarmani: Getting the best price is not the same thing as not understanding product stepping. I'll leave it there.

                            • -1

                              @jasswolf: A 5700 sounds better then a 2080.

Most never heard of AMD or NVIDIA.

I've got this phone (Telstra variant) since early Jan, supplied through work.

For $1049, I'd recommend other phones over this. At $700, it's still debatable if it is worth it.

If you get A90, install Google Camera port!

One thing I like about this phone is the flatscreen.

  • +2

Wow that's an expensive mid range phone!!!

    • +1

Yeah it's neither here nor there at that price point….

Better off with a discounted flagship IMO.
