Fired up the PS3 after a few years. The dualshock 3 controller is dead and wont charge. I’m looking to get a replacement wireless controller for under $25.
Had a look at ebay and Amazon but not sure how compatible they are.. some reviews say that the PS3 button doesnt work, or that the buttons break easily, or battery life is poor, doesnt pair, etc.
Any recommendations regarding where to buy a compatible controller please?

Don't bother with this crap. Pay a bit more for a genuine (or at the very least an officially licensed) Sony controller.

Outside of brand loyalty, if these controllers work as advertised, there's a high chance they're made to the same standards/quality of a third party controller that costs more due to the Sony licensing agreement.
Genuine first party may be the best, but may very well still sell for 3-4x the price of this. If OP just wants a cheap controller for nostalgia, this should be fine.
I've never had success with third party controllers. Buttons don't feel right, analog stick wears out, battery guzzling, weird connections issues, the list goes on. I'm sticking to genuine, better off in the long run
eBay has plenty of fakes so be careful when buying. Anything brand new and cheap is going to be counterfeit.

Replacing the battery is really surprisingly easy with the dualshock 3.
Given a choice, keeping the original hardware would definitely be my preference over a new clone of uncertain quality.
I have used a wired logitech gamepad f310 that works for most ps3 games in the past before buying a second had ps3 controller from ebgames
