    • Why? Sorry am from nsw

      • +16

Lot of people of Chinese heritage live in Box Hill, so it's not popular with the average Aussie racist.

        • -5

Even moreso with the Wuhan Chinese virus

      • Same as Hurstville

          Store in title

    • +4

The place is so deserted, its safer there than your local supermarket with people panic buying.

      • OP's name describes what Box Hill looks like now!

      • It's not as deserted as it was in February - I was there today and it was still fairly busy. Certainly long queues at Woolies. The market wasn't wall to wall people like it used to be, but it certainly wasn't what I'd describe as quiet either.

  • Going to Broden this deal

  • Wonder if they’ll make it free parking everyday.

  • +2

Won’t go even I get paid.

  • When I worked there my manager got her car's fuel syphoned out of her tank on the top level parking so have fun with that

    • +2

In that case the deal title to have been “Free Fuel At Box Hill shopping Centre”

  • +3

Imagine having to pay for parking at a shopping centre. Not even Highpoint, one of the largest shopping centres in Australia, charges for parking.

    • -1

You also pay for parking in the city! Outrageous!

      • +2

Comparing a middle-outer suburb like Box Hill to the Melbourne CBD is perhaps the dumbest thing I'll read on the internet this week.

        • Is it? Thought they rank the same as not as cool as Sydney. :) haha

        • -4

Apple doesn’t charge for shipping! As such, no other company should either!!!!

          • +2

@askbargain: You're really just outdoing yourself now, well done.

            • -1

@xyron: I'm sorry you don't know how to respond to your own stupidity.

              • @askbargain: Proving the adage that arguing on the internet is pointless, but here we go:

                1. There is no justification for a non-descript shopping mall in middle suburbia in Melbourne to ever charge for parking when its competing malls don't do so. Therefore, this is not a bargain just because they decide to waive the parking fees that they should never have had in the first place.

                2. Comparing a middle-suburban shopping mall to the CBD is perhaps the most irrelevant and stupid thing you could have said. Hundreds of thousands of people go into the CBD every day to work, in all facets and fields, from professional services to health, and of course many others. None of those people would ever need to come to a shopping mall in middle suburbia to do their jobs. So, the comparison between parking costing money in the CBD vs. a middle-suburban shopping mall is completely, utterly irrelevant.

                3. But then you outdid yourself by then saying that because Apple doesn't charge for shipping, no other business should either. Again, other businesses run at different profit margins, selling different products, and not all of them can justify shipping for free. That is, again, an irrelevant comparison. But you went and made it anyway.

                • +1

@xyron: A nondescript shopping mall that is a massive public transport hub? Parking fee there is nominal but is there so it doesn't become used only by public transport users rather than shoppers.

                  • +6

@Hypnotoad: This could be done by giving free parking for a limited period (2 or 3 hours, like at West Lakes in Adelaide), rather than charging people for it holus-bolus. I still don't think Box Hill shopping centre should be getting free publicity on here by eliminating fees on parking that they should never have had in the first place.

                    • +1

@xyron: Yeah, not a bad idea. Fees are $1 an hour for the first 4 hours then ramp up after that so they're not particularly expensive but obviously free for the first 3-4 hours would be better.

                • -1

                  @xyron:

Again, other businesses run at different profit margins, selling different products, and not all of them can justify shipping for free

And some people can't justify free parking?

    • Lol because everybody wants to go to knifepoint…

    • I think it might have something to do with the close proximity of Box Hill Hospital.

  • +2

It's worth the short drive to Forrest Hill just to avoid the masses who can't park to save their life at that dump.

    • -1

      ^^^ For avoidance of doubt.

Are you generalising based on demographics (cultural) or geographics (location).

      Or both.

      • Geograpics. The roads around are always clogged and signage is poor so people don't understand which bits are one way and it just all sucks as an experience.

  • +2

Lol, like fishing, bait is always free to fish but what fish loses is life.

  • I don't think that mall is getting many people lately after the two new apartment buildings opening nearby, many people are using the lower car park for long term car storage

  • +2

Parking used to be free at Box Hill, then they charged you if over 2 hours now they charge you by the hour every day of the week. Thieving operators who haven't invested a cent into the joint yet rake in big bucks from parking now, very tired looking shopping centre where the old escalators only work when they feel like it.

    • its 1 dollar an hour be hard to find any places which charge cheaper

they not making that much money off it

      • Sure, it's "not that much"

Buuuut, every day there's thousands of cars parked in there. If each car only paid for one hour total, that's still thousands of dollars every day for literally nothing. No effort, no extra staff or maintenance, nothing.

So no, it's still profit and it's extra profit for no extra work on their part. Going from free to paid when there's nothing different other than the fee, is not something people are going to like on a bargain hunting forum.

I still get annoyed when I see ads the odd time I watch something on SBS and remember how they used to be ad free like 15 years ago. Can't blame them for wanting more money with less effort, and the same argument can be applied to the car park. I can't blame them for it, but I am never gonna be happy about it. And even if the other networks carparks have a higher number of ads fee, it's still an annoyance that wasn't always there.
