OzBargain Update 16 May 2007

Just update the code behind OzBargain to include some new features

  • You can now post either links, coupons or files (still using the external site). Coupons are currently formatted a bit differently.
  • Links do no longer need to be unique (because of sad fact that merchants don't always have unique promotion pages).
  • Small popup when you click on a user's name to quickly see his/her profile.

Not much has changed in functionality — but the internal changes enable me to add more features easier. Next on the list are negative voting, reporting expired/invalid/spam deals, etc. Meanwhile, expect things to break here and there as I don't have much time testing this change. I guess that's what the "Beta" is for next to our OzBargain logo :)

Any feature requests?

  • Thanks for your hard work scotty! The unique URL is definately a plus point. Not sure if this is possible to be implemented, but what do you think of the feature where registered users can get an e-mail sent for special deals posted (if they decide to enable this feature). The e-mail will contain a brief description, where the user have to visit the site to read the full story on it.

    • I am still bringing back the unique URL checking when the URL is filled out during submitting the links. However, instead of forbidding it, it will be a warning saying there might be duplicate.

As of the email, you can get email subscription via our feedburner feeds, however at once a day (I need need to check whether there's an option to dispatch email whenever a new deal is posted). I will put that up in a few days.

  • What about an RSS feed? I'd subscribe to that!

    • There are currently two feeds that might interest you:

Front Page Deals — Deals that made to the front page. Currently deals that have more than 3 votes.

Recent Deals — All deals posted, and this feed is also served by FeedBurner with an email subscription option. I will create a page on how to subscribe via email later. Otherwise, visit my blog page, and at the bottom of the post there is text box where you can put in your email address and subscribe. At most 1 email per day at the moment.
