[VIC] Free Freshly Cooked Vegetarian Meals For Those in Need @ Blackburn Gurudwara Sikh Temple

2520

Seen on Facebook, the local Sikh temple based out of Blackburn in Melbourne is offering free vegetarian meals for "international students, people engaged in health and essential services, senior citizens, etc."…dont know who they categorise under etc., but please don't abuse this deal as it's a great service they're offering to the community during these tough times!

Edit: Also available with delivery in South-Eastern and Western suburbs (see post discussion for links)

Not to be confused with charity giveaways run by official charity organisations. This is a routine practice in Sikh communities called 'Langar'

      And turbans.

        Or hair nets.

  • +25

All Sikh temples always have free food for everyone. Of course the takeaway in plastic containers is the new thing

  • +29

This deal is fully Sikh, mate!

    • +7

      Incorrect. Correct.

    • +11

Sage y r u such a negative Nancy? Maybe you need more fully Sikh vegetarian food in your life

    • +6

It's called service to your community..

    • +2

I think people have taken this comment the wrong way. I think Sage was implying that it's not a "deal" in the sense that everyone should go and take advantage of it, but rather they're a charity looking to help people in need out in times of need. So basically if you're not struggling (which should be most of this site given the recent poll about if you've lost your job due to COVID-19), then don't take advantage of this offer.

I don't think people are seeing this as a bargain (or at least, not most people). Most people would recognise this is a valuable and selfless service to the community on behalf of the Sikh community in light of the current Coronavirus situation

      • +1

It doesnt matter if you are struggling or not. Everyone is welcome! We dont care about anyone's background as we are all part of the human race.

        • …as we are all part of the human race.

          What about jv?

    Oh yum, indian food!

What a great community members the Sikhs are! Sikh Volunteers Australia also went to regional Victoria to feed people affected by the bushfires early in the year! Lots of respect, thank you all!

  • Is this only on weekdays, nod weekends? Where's info on delivery? I clicked on each of the links but didn't see anything. I have a neighbour who is a senior citizen and she's too afraid to go shopping (crowded panic buyers and shelves are stripped).

    Wow…Such an amazing gesture….
We see all these Sikhs helping out everyone in the time of need around the Globe but being a minority in every country sadly they have always been subjected to racism/attacks….Look at this recent news out of Afghanistan - https://globalnews.ca/news/6734140/kabul-sikh-attack-islamic-state/…..

Free healthy Indian Food. Who does not want it?

  • Does anyone know if they accept donations?

    • Yes in a way but there is no obligation. You are welcome to pay your respects inside and we allow everyone in. Given the current situation, people are limited to paying respect and cannot be seated in the main congregation hall.

      • +1

Thanks! I'm actually not in need of the services right now, but looking for a way to help, so if you have an online way to donate towards food, or if I could get some food delivered to you, let me know.

    • +4

Thanks for the kind offer Indeedido. Simple - Just drop off any food or raw ingredients to ANY Sikh temple, ANYWHERE in the world. ALL Sikh temples run a "Langar" = free communal kitchen.

Anyone (Sikh or non-Sikh) can get a free vegetarian meal with no obligation or questions asked. The only requirement is that all are treated equally (Men/ women, Rich/ poor, powerful, weak).

The entire thing is run completely from donations. Sikhs routinely donate raw ingredients to their temple every week. Sikh community members volunteer their time every week to cook, clean and serve.

You can also make a donation with cash or card - you will be given a receipt by the Temple Treasurer, which is tax deductible - the donation will be used to buy ingredients.

If you have no food or money to give, you can donate your time to help cook, clean or serve.

Hope that helps! Feel free to ask any other questions

Thanks for the info! I can't get to a temple as I don't have a car, but I will definitely share this with others!

        • Hey mate. The temple is now taking monetary donations via direct deposit. Please also consider the other temples that are in Victoria. Im sure they will appreciate any donations
