Comment voting

Just curious what people think of voting comments up or down as it's currently practiced. Reading some of this deal's comments made me wonder if it really has reached the point where people "have each others' backs" in voting battles :D

Rather than simply allowing the community to hide distasteful or inappropriate comments, it's seems as though it's mainly been perceived as a way to banish comments people disagree with or think are dumb, and encourages little popularity contests. Was that the original intention, or has this been an unintended side effect? And do people think it's a positive or negative thing? :)

Comments

  • I use it if I agree with someone's comment, although I tend not to vote down comments even if I don't like them.

For me it's like saying, 'yeah I agree' or 'good point'

  • if it really has reached the point where people "have each others' backs" in voting battles :D

Absolutely! I've only been coming here for a short time, but have seen comments quite legitimately questioning the bargain-worthiness of some deals voted down into invisibility in record time.

  • I use the + if I agree with or support a particular comment. The negs, I save only for inappropriate negative votes, as they can actually make a difference to whether a deal gets seen or not. Anonymously negging comments really serves no purpose. I have noted on more than one occasion people posting "I negged your comment because…" presumably dissatisfied at their anonymity.
I've no love for negative votes, for comments or deals.
