Powered by McAfee. Man that guy is a weird unit. Good deal though!

    • +5

He sold the company ages ago, makes weird YouTube videos now

And be sure to follow him on Twitter, he's awesome :)

Hmm not sure if I want real-time protection slowing down my router as well….
Educated at Roanoke College in Salem - he could be a demon?

  • +16

Wow, it redefines geometry! "….places 4 internal antennas perpendicular to each other".

    • +1

You need a 4 dimesional VR screen to see it properly. Either that or the antennas are so small they're all strings.

    • WiFi in the 4th dimension is uninhibited by walls. THE FUTURE IS NOW!

  • +10

Does it also double as a water filtration system under the sink?

    • +1

Why didn't I think of this… About half of DLinks products would be better at this than working as routers

    • That's the Xiaomi model, this is D-Link

  • +1

strange sort of pricing with these

introduced at $499, instantly discounted to $299

now seems to be $199 as normal staticice range

for $99 i dont think you're going to do better

i think this will join my razer 2300 in my shitty wifi AP collection

also this has alexa and can be app controlled

    so sad alexa play despacito

  • I ordered one Thank you

  • +3

Not supported by DD-WRT, so I'll pass.

    • -7

Did you know that even though you get alot of features you do not use. DD WRT is unsecure. I flashed my linksys to dd wrt in 2016 and my router got hacked. I stopped using it and upgraded login security to rsk key and as soon as I reset my router and started using my router again in Dec 2019. I started receiving targeted phishing emails from a hacker/stalker. Who ever thought the coronavirus started early this year.
DD WRT and tomato routers are used as botnets to perform DDOS attacks.
      https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/01/inter…

      • +2

Almost every computer system is insecure. The problem with manufacturer firmware is that the feature set is often limited and firmware updates slow or non-existent.

I looked at Internet routers running Tomato are under attack by notorious crime gang

The exploits use already infected devices to scan the Internet for Tomato routers and, when found, to check if they use the default username and password of “admin:admin” or “root:admin” for remote administration.

If you don't change the password, you can expect to be hacked.

        • -1

@matthew42 of course I changed my password to a long 64 character password and on top of that added risk keys only on the machines to manage it. There was no outside remote management enabled. So when I got hacked I blamed my little brother. He was the only one with physical access to my router. But when I received spam email. I knew it couldn't be my little brother and apologised.

      • +1

That's your fault for exposing the management interface to the internet.

      • +3

lol, DLINK is notoriously insecure, e.g. baked in non changable passwords, total unwillingness to fix demonstrably vulnerable hardware.

I'd take DD-WRT over it any day, its supported better than the OEM software.

        • -2

True but least the code isn't exposed to the whole internet to exploit. I remember on my older dlink it had the option to turn on auto capticha. I read every combination of 8 character password can be cracked in 6hours with a brute force password cracking machine running 24/7. And let's not forget the IT security in hospitals. Hospital computers are not secure. Just look what wannacry did to hospital computers.

    • -8

Oh and i didn't add. I dc my internet at home bc no nbn. My neighbour let me use their internet to fix their computer issues. It was around the same time i used my DDWRT as an extender that my neighbour suddenly got a ruptured appendix. It is quite a coincidence and suspicious.
I do not trust DDWRT or Tomato anymore. It is not your own code it is someone elses. Who knows what backdoors they put in there.

      • +21

Just to clarify: you are suggesting the custom firmware on your router was somehow responsible for rupturing an organ in your neighbour's body?

        • +6

ssquid, argh, you missed a chance to ask him if by using ddwrt as an extender he managed to successfully establish first ever stable link between the router and human appendix.

          • -6

@olderman: 😂 haha I have been using wifi since 2003. Studies show power levels are too small to penetrate the human body. What I am saying is it was "bad energy" that caused my neighbours sudden ruptured appendix. @ssquid if U suddenly lost close family members in a mysterious illness you would be suspicious.

        • +6

          This thread made my day.

          • +2

@h4lcyon: Mine too. AzNDuDe commenter should be upvoted, not downvoted.

        • -4

          @ssquid
The world is crazy thes days. Creates paranoia in the population. You have no idea the crazy things I have gone through. My mum who worked as an interpreter for the Sydney western health service for 25 years. Suddenly developed cancer and passed away really quickly in 2016. She was still young. If you want more details then this happened when I came back from a trip. And the nurse that treated her suddenly patient abused her one day saying "I know who she is etc etc" and refused to tend to her needs.
What I am saying is BC I setup my ddwrt as an extender. The Hackers targetted my neighbours router which is less secure than mine.

      • Go see a doctor dude. Delusions and paranoia out the wahoo.

    • Do you know of a good router supported by dd-wrt? Looking to replace my R7000 because it seems to be crashing a lot recently.

    • Just had a look and seems this is supported model.
Look for DIR-882. This is AC2600 model.

      https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

You can search the database as well dd-wrt.com as well.

  • Thank you for posting, good deal got one :) .

  • Is this nbn combatible? I am using the one that came along Kogan for my super loop connection. The range is pathetic and am looking for a new one. Any suggestions? Planning to switch to ABB, is their modem any good?

    • +1

I've got the ABB modem (seemed well received on the NBN whirlpool threads).
The 2.4Ghz band seems flakey for no apparent reason, and overall the router drops connection every few days and requires 1-3 restarts.

Maybe I just got a dud unit, but I wouldn't spend >$100 on this again.

EDIT: I'm referring to the Netcomm NF18ACV that is recommended/supplied by ABB

      • +1

Updating the routers firmware might stop it dropping connection.

    • +1

This D-Link works on the NBN. From ABB the one to get is the Nest wifi and not the Netcomm. If you want something cheaper click here.

      • +1

        Thanks, will check it out

  • I'm in the market for a half decent, but reasonably priced mesh system (1 Hub + 1 Access Point). Can anyone recommend any? The Nest Wifi is too pricy to justify at this point.

    • +1

      Tenda/Kogan

    • +3

I purchased the Netgear Orbi RBK20 AC2200 a couple of weeks back at Officeworks for $273.6 (price-beat Centrecom at $288). Was one of the cheaper options I could find, other than the TP-Link Deco M5 which is closer to the $200 mark. I went for the Orbi as it has a dedicated 5ghz backhaul (Deco M5 does not) and is MU-MIMO capable.

    • +1

I just got a Netgear Orbi RBK50, improved wifi speeds drastically. Also the user interface + options seems to be plenty if you like tinkering with things.

      • can you do qos with the orbi? i'm sick of fighting over bandwith for work conferences when the kids smash the nbn with netflix, spotify and youtube i can't really work properly.

        • I've been trying to do QoS with Orbi, theres a page for it but I haven't gotten it to work yet. What you can do is remotely turn off devices. haha

    • I purchased the Tenda MW6 earlier this week, to add mesh wifi to my existing network. I don't really need the latest and greatest speeds, good coverage is more important to me and this looked the goods for the price ($205)!

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Tenda-MW6-802-11AC-Mu-Mimo-System/…

    • $140 for the TP-Link Deco E4 AC1200 Whole Home Mesh WiFi System.

  • Great deal, thanks OP.

  • Dumb question - but do you need a separate modem for this? Or is it built in? Couldn't see mention of it in the ad.

    • +2

If your on FTTN or FTTB yep you need a separate modem.

If your on FTTC, FTTP or HFC no NBN supply the NTD or NCD.

      • Thank you. Unfortunately I am a complete Luddite so I don't know what any of this means.. How would one find out? I do know I have nbn…

  • +2

id only upgrade router for wifi 6 compatability

  • Moved.

  • Make sure you don't place your order using a VPN…this generates an Order on Hold Alert.I am trying to get this sorted out now.

  • +1

Nowaday it is mesh router or nothing for me.

  • IMO you're better off getting a Telstra Gateway Max 2 from Gumtree for $20.

    • That sounds like great value, what makes the Telstra Gateway Max 2 better than say this router?
Does it have custom firmwares available as well?

      • you need some skills to integrate a branded router into your network

also wont have the features of this, meaningless that they are

  • From a router perspective how comparable is this to the Asus RT-AC68U? Particularly with wifi.

    • D-Link doesn't support DD-WRT

      • Going to be honest, I have no idea what that is and Googling didn't really clear it up. What's an every day feature that DD-WRT brings?

    • +1

      See https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/d-link-ac2600-wi-fi-router-dir…
Compares to 86U. It's bad at file transfer, maybe something with the McAfee protection can be turned off to fix it.

      • Thanks! For $99 this seems like a great, if not the best option for wireless.

    • The D-Link has faster wifi spec. The ASUS has better overall router features and GUI.

  • Not sure why I need one but got one…damn u ozb.

  • Why do people buy routers? Do you not get one for free from your ISP? My ISP (Telstra) always give me one for free every 18-24 months.

    • +3

ISP's generally give you absolutely trash routers, that are often pre-configured with hard-coded DNS etc.

Additionally a router is not necessarily a modem, so your ISP might be giving you a combo unit if you have ADSL2+.

I take the router my ISP provided, and throw it in the bin (just joking, I keep it as a backup).

      • Thanks for that, I stand corrected.

How about the NBN router from ISP? Are they any good or should I buy this one?

    • +2

Better performance, wifi range, VPN client/server and firmware.

No not all ISPs give out "free" routers.

  • if it had USB storage I'd give it a try. However in my experience D-Link APs with internal antennas have pretty poor range.
*looks like it has USB storage with FTP and SAMBA

    a review
    https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2019/03/rapid-review-d-link-ac…
as expected seems to have pretty poor wifi range.
Think I'll spend a bit more and get the TP-Link AX-50

  • -1

Okay, so based on some of the CAUSE AND EFFECT going on this thread, we are all GOING to DIE as this router is from D-Link.

  • Tempting to get this as a Wifi bridge.

Can't run cat6 in my place, have to go with wireless solution.

    • Nah get a proper wifi mesh router instead. TP-Link Deco if your on a budget.

      • Thanks mate,

What's the performance like with mesh system?

It will be good if I can get 1/2 a gigabit speed.

        • Assuming your ISP buys enough bandwidth the performance is close to full speed of the plan your paying for.

Do you have FTTP or HFC?

          • @Twix: FTTP

            • @vash12: Sweet FTTP! TP-Link Deco has Gigabit WAN and LAN ports. If you have a bigger budget Netgear Orbi and Nest wifi are solid options.

  • +2

Rice cooker and router in one, that's different.

  • My router is dying with drops in connection, I’d be grateful if anyone could help me choose as I have no idea what makes a decent router. I’m on nbn HFC.

I was with Aussie Broadband, so I have the Netcomm NF18ACV. My new ISP (Launtel) suggested me the Netgear R6400. Should I get this deal or go with my ISP recommendation?

    Thank you all!

  • +1

Still waiting delivery 14 days after order. Anyone received theirs?

    • +1

finally, after a long wait, I got it yesterday, but having issues with it.

My isp username has 34 characters and this router won't take more than 32 characters so basically I can't log in to the network.

try calling D-link but the long wait and still no one picks up the call.

I hope you will get it soon and don't have the same issue.

      Cheers

      • +1

Interesting about the name with isp, I will be using it as a router only so doubt this will be an issue and my user name is short. Hope you get it sorted soon.

        • I wouldnt bother using such an unreliable device as a router.

I have mine set up as an AP and its work acceptbaly with good speeds.

If I'm getting 650-867 on an ax6 wifi card then its all I can expect for $99.

    • +1

Mine is still at “Shipping information received” since I ordered on the 3rd of April.

If it doesn’t arrive today I’ll just be asking for a refund.

  • Yes this is terrible service. Faster to get items from China

  • I got mine after 2 weeks' wait which was supposed to ship in 2 biz days. I got this primarily for gaming to replace my aging Netgear 6200 and have some level of parental control. So far I am not impressed with the parental control bit as its still too high level (same as 6200). The other disappointment is with its coverage. I have my gaming PC on the 1st floor whereas the NBN modem (FTTC) and the router are set up on the ground floor. I have noticed some serious lag during gaming. I used wifi analyzer to test the signal strength and was disappointed to get weaker numbers than my 6200 :( . I checked the firmware its the latest one (1.03), now If it doesn't work smoothly. I might put this on sale.

As for better coverage and Mbps. Do you guyz have any recommendations?

  • Got this a few days back.

Overall this piece of shit indeed live up to it's shitty name.

    1) Configurations was easy thru the app, but lots of bugs and only managed to get thru on the 2nd try.
    2) Coverage area is smaller than my aging ASUS RT56.
    3) My TV has issues connecting to the router. (It never works)
    4) Connections keep dropping for no apparent reason.

I will be returning this as soon as i hear back from Centrecom…

    • it is indeed a piece of shit, I am returning it too but when I went to center com they ll be like you have to return it via online. because you bought it online.

      • Seems like you have to fork out shipping to return it, unless a fault is found with the product.

        • I would concur. Its not as good as the $65 Razer 2400 however this is still the highest speed router you can get for $99.

I do get there's some config issues and I dont care for the McAfee stuff but I found it to have accepted range and the speed is good.

This is the thing… all these cheap routers have gotchas or they wouldnt be $99.
