Patiently waiting for this or something very close to this to be somewhere back near $1,000.

  • Wouldn't pay more than a million personally

  • Still happy with my Alienware aw3418dw, payed $1500 back in 2018. This doesn't look like much of an upgrade.

    • +1

      No it doesn't.
Still, thought it was worth putting up if others wanted it.

      • Yeah for sure. Just talking myself out of the thought of upgrading.

  • +1

    Only if it was $1,874.260.

    Thanks OP, bought 5.

    • :O

Haha that's a lot of monitor!

    • Which GPU are you using for all 5 monitors?

Mine supports only 4, but I settled on 3. :)

  • +3

The LG 34GK950F is a better monitor. If you're considering this, you're probably getting it for the the better customer support.

    • +1

Personally waiting to see where the LG 34GN850 lands before making a final call.

      • is that coming out soon in Australia, or do we have to wait and see?

      • the 34GK950F is probably the choice 34 monitor today
im waiting on the 346P1CRH. i hope it comes.

        • i would have thought the titan army equivalent would have been the pick for these specs

    • Better customer support and GSYNC. The GSYNC module allows for a lower range which is important at this resolution and variable overdrive which mitigates ghosting due to overshoot.

Basically if you have a NVIDIA card and can afford to spend this much on a monitor then I'd recommend this. Most people won't even realise the differences but the advantages of GSYNC are still evident which was why I bought this monitor over the LG.

    Amazing, bought 7

You could buy an LG 55" OLED for this price lol

      Any other pc gaming tips?

    • Not the same. Look at the resolution this is a 1080p vs 1440p for the alienware…

      • Serious question - is that extra resolution worth $1000 extra?

        • Not sure about worth $1K, but 1080p at 34 inches up close on a desk would bother me (large pixels)

          • @rhimes: I agree at 1080p i would rather stick with 27" 1440p IMHO.

        • The alienware can often be found around $1200 and $1000 for the AW3418.
And then for the difference in price I would pick the alienware without a doubt.
But not at this ridiculous price!

        • its not worth it, theyre ripping you off. if you want 1440p wait a week for https://www.pccasegear.com/products/47652/lg-34gk950f-uwqhd-…

it has better everything and is cheaper

      • true the alienware has a lower refresh rate, and no HDR support and costs $1000 more. you could buy 2 of the LG's and still have $250 to take out the mrs.

  • +1

The lg 34gk950f is much much better, gsync compatible and is cheaper.
I cannot justify to buy this alienware for $300 more!!

  • i cant decide if the extra 1k+ is worth it over this?

    https://www.pbtech.com/au/product/MONTTA3401/Titan-Army-N34Q…

    • I've never heard of this brand before, it's quite cheap for a 144hz ultrawide!!
      It's a VA panel though.

Unfortunately I cannot find any review of it.

    • Not worth it. VA panels are fine, not all VA panels are equal. I quite like the Philips ultra-wides:

      https://www.pccasegear.com/products/48375/philips-346b1c-qhd…

The thing with IPS at ultrawide size is you will get lots of "IPS glow" in dark scenes. Some people don't care about this, but it bothers me, and now I've moved on from IPS.

      • Moved on to? You just said VA isn't great and IPS glow is an issue…isn't TN the only one left? Which from my understanding is nowhere near as good as the other 2.

        • he was saying the alienware isnt worth the extra $1k, but that the VA panels from philips is good

        • You just said VA isn't great

I didn't say that. I said VA panels are fine.

I own several monitors of different types and sizes. The best monitor I own is a Philips ultrawide (349P), this VA panel cost me about $850. Black levels are excellent, better than IPS. I do photo and graphics and gaming and everything, and I really appreciate black looking black, not grey.

IPS glow is not something I want stretching over the large surface of my wide screen. It was tolerable on smaller displays, but I've moved on.

There's other factors… like viewing angles. Better on IPS. But why do you need good viewing angles when you're sitting in front of the monitor? Answer is you don't. If you sit directly in front of the monitor, this is a non-issue, and means VA is the better choice again.

          • @cerealJay: I see, what about refresh rate? and also colour accuracy? VA vs IPS I mean.

Also, I used to think the same about viewing angles but experiencing TN panels that have different hue in each corner when you are viewing the monitor from dead centre has me convinced it's more important that one may think.

            • @fufufu: If the monitor is curved, the corners are angled towards you. This reduces viewing angle issues. My VA panel has an acceptable uniform image edge to edge. Technically it's inferior to IPS when using the test I've linked below, but in practical use it's insignificant, even for photo editing.

Modern monitors have excellent adjustments for colour, you can set the colour and calibrate how you like it. My VA monitor has 117% sRGB coverage, which is good.

If you want to put your monitor through some tests such as banding, viewing angles, contrast etc, this site is useful:
              http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gradient.php

I've linked to the gradient banding test because that is where my VA is superior to my IPS - which is a cheaper IPS, so probably 6 bit panel. It's an LG cheapo IPS ultrawide, and I would not recommend. IPS monitors can definitely fail hard.

IPS glow is really only noticeable at night. So if you only use computer mostly in day time, then IPS might be better choice.

Finally, the viewing angle test will reveal IPS as the winner:
              http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/viewing_angle.php

BUT… as I said, in practical use at least with my VA monitor, it's impossible to notice the colour shift at the edges in normal use - that includes working with large blocks of single colours in Photoshop etc. The only time I notice it, is when doing this monitor test.

      • i want the P series of that monitor 346P1CRH

  • Bought this in Dec 2019, it was on sale for $1,624.25. I also claimed price protection when it dropped to 1434. I upgraded from Samsung S34E790C (VA panel with 60Hz). Happy with my purchase. I enjoy the extra 60Hz for gaming on FPS. Otherwise, I am used to 34in so no complaint.

Do note that the monitor stand is huge. You might want to consider getting a mount arm to save yourself some space on desk. You do lose that light on the back of monitor stand but I rather get more space savings.

    • what mount do u recommend? I'm looking for a mount for mine! :)

      • +1

I bought StarTech Deskmount. It is pretty strong. It allowed you to release gas tension to move it up and down. It also allow you to tilt. I was scared putting on 34 in but it has been holding pretty darn well for the past 3 months! Here's a link to it.

        • Cool thanks.

I did some research last night and eyeing this one at the moment:
          https://www.atdec.com.au/awms-d40

          Can be had for $200ish.

The spec says 6kg for curved and 9kg for flat. The aw3420dw is 6.56kg without stand.

Does anyone here happen to have this mount and paired it with the aw3420dw?

          • +1

@chew_chew: I have their old product without vertical movement on the arm. Overall, it is okay for 2x 27in. I am not sure if it can handle 34in for you. I am using it at the moment and I don't like some of their plastic parts. They can be finicky.

  • For what it's worth, I am currently on my 3rd replacement Alienware aw3418dw. The product is amazing but seems to break down after half a year or so. The dell returns team has been awesome though and the returns process has been relatively painless the second time around.

  • I am not gaming all the time and I really like 1600px vertical resolution of my current monitor.
Most of these gaming ones are going up to 1440px max.

    • +1

You need one of the 38" 3840x1600.

  • These were 1200 at the start of the year - yeah nah

  • was $1,494.35 just 5 months ago…
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/alienware-aw3420dw

on paper it is slightly better than the X34P, which I personally own, and it's so much cheaper, often on steeper discount compare to AW3420DW

  • +1

I am using one right now. They are an awesome screen. Could you find something cheaper? Yes. But the customer support from Dell is great and comparing it side by side with the LG. The alienware looks crisper and the colour is better. The only thing the screen doesn't have is HDR.

    • +1

Agreed. G-Sync is better then G-Sync Compatible as well and HDR at this price point is rubbish. True HDR panels are in a class of their own but you definitely pay for it.

    • Me too.

I got the AW3420DW in the recent Dell 30% off offer and I am very happy with this screen.
Not the cheapest but the quality and value was there for me, especially as I wanted the extra warranty so I have 5 years Dell Premium Display coverage.

I have had this coverage on other Dell monitors and on the 2 occasions I have needed it, it has been very efficient.
