Quoting DSE website reviews:"The drive is easy to plug in and is in working order in a few minutes. No software is required unless you care to try the programmes included. The HDD is presentable in appearance & makes no noise.
However, this noiselessness proves to be a mixed blessing. No fan to cool it! It warms to around 52 degrees which is considered too hot for a long life
I have mine up on short "legs" with space all around it but to keep the temperature below 50 I have to turn it off.
I believe that it just is not designed for the Brisbane, Qld, climate"More here at Newegg:

And Seagate forums:

Thanks OP for a good find price wise, just want people to be aware this unit could be a mixed blessing.
Data loss aint fun.

+2 votesExactly Was reading about the problems with this Seagate Expansion 2tb. From what I have read the problem relates the the crummy case that Seagate uses. The drive itself is fine. So if you buy, crack open the case and use the drive as internal in your pc and chuck out the case. Although doing this will obviously void your warranty.
+1 voteIf you mean literally cracked open then yes. I think most of these cases are sealed (not screwed together) so there might be some breakage involved in getting the drive out.
Nice deal, but I think I'll skip it. I'd rather pay an extra $10 for a bare internal drive and have warranty, my place gets too hot in summer to risk it (it would be on 24/7)
+5 votesOh, of course Seagate will be using WD for their external drives, just the same as Western Digital use Maxtor/IBM. They never use their own drives for their own branded and packaged externals.
No one will know what drive they get until they receive it and break it open, because all drive manufacturers use 3rd party drives picked out of a claw machine and even fake the firmware, you won't know until you physically look and when you do, too late, warranty gone 'cos you opened it.

It's a frigging Seagate drive, what drive do you expect to be in the bloody thing???

Amazon reviews of the same drivehttp://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?name=ST320005EXA101-RK...
From Seagate's siteNow someone more technical tell me if I can crack it open for the drive?
+1 voteManUtdFans on 22/09/2011 - 09:22 ¶What the? I just bought one from OfficeWorks yesterday for $88.
mikafamily on 22/09/2011 - 09:24 ¶For 2TB external drive, $68 delivered, reputable brand (who have fantastic warranty support) what more do you want???
Tough cowd here at OB
+4 votesKing Tightarse on 22/09/2011 - 09:37 ¶Price is good definitely, but lets see if you are so keen if you lose all your data.
There's more to it than price alone. I have seen people contemplate spending huge amounts to retrieve their data on failed drives.

Paying Seagate under warranty, for a 2nd drive to store your data on, when your 7200.11 drive fails, does not sound like "fantastic warranty support" :S
Note: 7200.11 was about 2 years ago
mikafamily on 22/09/2011 - 13:14 ¶Hmmm this is an external drive.. so this is where you back up your data isn't it?? So if this crashes you still have the original??
I have found seagate to have great Warranty support not like some others
I'm sorry foundit I don't understand what you are getting at ???

Not sure on exact model number, but its a 5900rpm drive so assume its either:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-au/products/desktops/green-dri...
or
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-gb/products/internal-storage/b...Alternatively you can purchase 2tb Seagate internal green for $75 with 3 year warranty from itestate in Sydney so not really worth it to save $7 just to get external drives with to crack open and void warranty, just to use internally?

They basically copied the exact same deal as the dick smith deal last month- http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51119
Except this is $11 cheaper :)
alwayseric on 22/09/2011 - 10:41 ¶thought this would be a good buy, now hesitate after reading the comments above.
i just want an external drive to supplement my laptop. 1-2 tb, usb2 suffices. i want good value. any other options? 1tb for less 50bucks?

Don't worry, nobody complained after the last deal about broken seagate drives so they can't be that bad- http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51119?page=1
