I've been looking for an option for searing all the meat we have been cooking up with the Anovo Sous Vide's we bought a couple years ago. It appears these two brands are mentioned frequently in reviews/youtube/ozbargain posts as one of the best options for butane torch searing Sous Vide meat. I've searched for these items before and often found it difficult to get them at reasonable prices delivered to (or within) Australia.

I stumbled on this online while debating whether I really needed that weber, the reviews seem great and they fit the brand recommendations. The compatible torch is the BernzOmatic TS8000. You can find it for around $110aud delivered online on ebay (thanks TEER3X, See comments).

You will need the Torch and the Attachment!

    They work fantastically!

Su-VGun is no 1 on my wishlist, I have emailed the company re shipping to Australia but haven’t received a reply yet https://grillblazer.myshopify.com/collections/grillblazer-pr…

    • +1

I wanted one of these too but I have already emailed the guy there and he said AU shipping is not available since many of his aussie customers started having their packages confiscated by customs as it has been classified as an imitation firearm. Sad.

      • I was afraid that would be the case… thanks for the info

      • +1

I had no idea about this, what a shame! I backed it on Kickstarter and received both the Su-V Gun & GrillGun - both are fantastic. Much better than the Searzall.

        • how much did it set you back

          • @asa79: Looks pretty cool, but seems unobtainable at the moment. either way I'm happy with finding the TS8000 locally.

  • dont forget the upgraded cash rewards. no items on time of click too (save for later first)

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/534928

    • These fall under Kitchen and Home Improvement which are ineligible for cashback

      • good pickup. my bad, i tried anyways then saw your post. :(

  • FYI the BZ4500HS isn't compatible with the Searzall

    • Argh… really?

  • Really, it's too wide. The sansaire kit uses the same head and that's not compatible with the Searzall.

  • The ts8000 is $260???

Holy crap, I may just have to sell mine.

ETA, they are around $110 on eBay

    • A lot of knockoffs on ebay, gotta make sure it's not "BernzOmatic" style. Let me know if you find a good deal on the TS8000.

edit: found the post you were referring to:

      TS8000 - $110 delivered ($5 off with code: PIZZA5 (Targeted?)) - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BERNZOMATIC-TORCH-KIT-STAND-ALON…

      • I got mine from Amazon while in the US, can't state the price here because there'd be way too much jealousy

How is the Searzall compared to pan searing?

    • Too much more trouble imho…

      • i get the idea, sous vide your meat, and maillard the exterior with a propene torch, but pan searing means you don’t need a mapp or propane bottle and you get your sear lines..

some people put mesh over the bbq coal chimney and grill on that if you want high heat, does 2 porterhouse, 3 eye fillets or 1 rump at a time, probably just as fidly, and 30 minute heat up.

        • Many chimneys are made of galvanized steel which begins releasing extremely toxic zinc fumes at temps of 200C, chimneys can reach as high as 600C and I'm sure some getting as high as 800C (blowtorch + fan)

although it is a good idea and super convenient (30 mins is amazing)

I'd recommend not using a grill grate and instead using a cast iron pan and then doing what you mentioned.

In fact I've made a whole bbq by placing a cast iron griddle (those large cast iron pan things) on top of two chimneys and have successfully bbq'd for up to 20 people

Note I combined it with sous viding every item prior and all i did was fire up the chimneys place the griddle on top and seared everything 15 seconds each side and had food for 20 people ready in I'm not kidding 10 mins.

          25 sausauges,

          about 20 burgers (I can't remember exactly)

          10 rib-eye steaks

          3kgs of chicken thighs

sous vided everything the day before and just refrigerated until I had to sear.

The longest thing on the day was just making the setup and waiting for the chimneys to heat up which took 10 mins as I used a hair dryer to pump air into it

Hope this helps, I'm a student engineer and curated this idea after a couple days of thinking.

It's quite portable too although there are a few components to take with you

If you have any questions about the setup let me know :)

  • So is the Searzall plus eBay torch all I need for this to work?

Where do you buy the fuel?

Bunnings - around $15 - ask at the information counter. - Get the MAPP yellow tank.

I just picked up a TS8000 from the eBay seller (purchased direct to support them). Great guy! Fantastic service and said he would support the unit for the full "LIFETIME" warranty. If you are in WA, go direct! But you can always buy it on their ebay store.

      • alright, I bought it, damn you! Thanks for doing the research on something that I'll enjoy using!

        • Just made some seared a Sous Vide lamb rack tonight, worked really well, but I think the searzall will help spread the heat a little more with less black spots. Tasted amazing though, great sear finish

          • @hypie: Made something like that a while ago, had a sear flame on the bottom from a pellet smoker plus the torch on top, got charred very nicely (almost too much). Was unbelievable.

      • My Bunnings, I assume most, would have these in the tools section (a little boxed off area).

  • If you wanna get the flamethrower that you see people on youtube using, these guys sell them - https://www.jamesshields.com.au/shop/item/wbk03

    • This is Out of stock though

  • I've added this as a comment in case someone wants this particular model:

[CAUTION!! - It appears that the BZ4500HS is NOT COMPATIBLE with the Searzall. You might still want to buy it for alternative purposes.]

BernzOmatic BZ4500HS Heat Torch - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00834RCLU/ref=ppx_yo_d… - (Ships from and sold by Amazon US)

BernzOmatic Price History (Camelx3) - It appears this is the lowest price ever on Amazon, with the most recent trend being around $150+aud.

  • so can i confirm that the BernzOmatic TS8000 is compatible with Searzall Torch Attachment?

    • +1

      Correct.

Have the TS8000, bought for searing, never liked the taste of the crust from a blowtorch, found it somewhat chemical tasting. Have since gone back to cast iron searing. Anyone used a Searzall that can comment on the taste?

    • What gas are you using? I didn't taste much today. Using MAPP.

    • Probably using the wrong gas. The searzall shouldn't make a difference with taste, I've used it on or off and taste no gas. Also use it to make creme brulee and comes out perfect.

  • Has anyone tried attaching the Searzall to the blowtorch Aldi were selling before?

  • Just saw this and I think it may be better just to get a cheap torch for myself. I can't justify spending about $250 for meat that I don't eat too often anyway. Plus they can't taste the difference between a cheap torch and a grill worth over a grand. Any thoughts on where we can get this cheap torch in Australia?

    • The amazon deal I also posted was a decent buy. $80… unless you are looking cheaper.

  • I was looking at the searzall for a long time and read a fair few negative reviews on it, ended up getting a searteq From Amazon US for a fraction of the price and quite happy with it.

  • How about the offer on Amazon for the Searzall for just under $87? (Free delivery for Prime members)
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Stainless-Culinary-Attachment-Hand…
It may well be the older model without the updated Palladium screens, but for occasional users like myself, it may be a good cost option.
I feel that the unit would still last many years if I was only using it once or twice a week mainly for browning steaks, and does apparently come with a spare screen anyway.

    • edit: just read the first review. Looks like you are right. older model?

"For anyone that is unsure about this, I received an actual Searzall branded item. The difference from the more expensive listing on Amazon that actually says Searzall is that this is the older version. In the first use video on the Searzall website, they state that anything shipping after October 2015 does not come with spare screens because they were upgraded to Palladium screens for longevity. The item I received did include the spare screens, meaning that it was produced before the end of 2015. That being said, I paid half the cost of a regular Searzall, so I am still happy with the purchase and would not want to return it for the more expensive model with Palladium screens. If I was a professional Chef using this thing daily, maybe the extra cost would be worth it, but as a guy who just wants to sear steaks occasionally, those screens will probably last as long as I own the thing. I’m sure that I could also but a Palladium screen later if needed, for less than the price difference of the more expensive listing. As a heads up though, make sure that you season it correctly the first time you light it. (facing the ground for 2 minutes). According to Searzall, not seasoning correctly will ruin the screen."

    • I just received the $87 unit and can confirm it's a Searzall-branded unit with two spare screens.

Looks like MAPP gas is a big no-no, a sure fire way to destroy the Searzall.

    https://community.anovaculinary.com/t/searzall-which-fuel/23…

Also make sure you set it up and season it properly before use:

    • Agreed, MAPP/MAPP plus should not be used as it burns higher than regular propane, OP should amend the post.

      • I use MAPP for silver soldering, gets extremely hot, propone with acetylene added.

        • amended, that video was very helpful. Thanks!

  • How many steaks approx can you sear with BernzOmatic 453g Propane Cylinder until it runs out?

    • +1

I've done, two stakes and a full rack of ribs so far. Doesn't seem like much has been consumed.

      • Thanks hypie. Do you recommend the searzall? I've seen some youtube clips that say the TS8000 is just as good as the searzall so no need. Whats your opinion?
        Cheers
