Champagne - Charles De Cazanova Sauvage & Nature 2 for $50 at Liquorland, VC & First Choice (Originally $75 & $65 each)

530

Whether you love or hate the packaging, this is a great deal for fans of real Champagne. Was selling at full price but more recently on clearance at $43 and $39 in store at LL stores near me. The Champagne house is respected and one of the oldest.

Reviews seem to be good and definitely worth a try at this price.

CHARLES DE CAZANOVE SAUVAGE ROSÉ
Another shout out to Cazanove, but I was so excited to see that their equally outrageously packaged rosé is coming in under $50. Bright pink snakeskin may be enough to cause some people to skip trying it, but it really is worth having a taste. It’s a beautiful coppery colour, with fine elegant bubbles. Distinct red fruits are apparent on the nose, but it was the palate that stayed with me. It was like eating pomegranate. It was very well balanced, with the pomegranate and black cherry flavours lingering even after my glass was finished. A must try for the price and a wonderful christmas gift.

CHARLES DE CAZANOVE BRUT NATURE
I will admit, it was the outrageous green snakeskin packaging that caught my eye, but I know the brand and Charles de Cazanove is a very well respected house. In fact it is one of the oldest houses in champagne dating back to 1811. The Brut nature is a relatively new addition to their collection. Brut Nature means that it has less than 3g sugar/litre – so you could even go as far to say it is a diet champagne! It is classic and clean, and citrusy. I found it very refreshing and very well balanced despite the low dosage, which I sometimes find a bit harsh. Great for a hot Chistmas Day down under. The packaging alone would make this a great gift.

When collecting, also check for the Charles de Cazanove
Tradition Millesimé Brut Champagne 2007
. It gets excellent reviews. Currently full price online at Liquorland https://www.liquorland.com.au/sparkling/charles-de-cazanove-… but on clearance in my local store for $45

Also Moutard Rose Chanpagne full price online at Liquorland but cheaper at VC and First Choice - but on clearance for $27 at a couple of my local Liquorland stoores

How does it compare to Great Western champagne?

    • +2

If you still have a Great Western labelled as Champagne, I wouldnt suggest drinking it to compare! I'm not sure what they call the Great Western now - whats your best deal on that one at the moment JV?

… I think you will find the bottles in this deal much more refined and probably a better deal for you too. For people that find the premium for Champagne too much its a good time to try, but of course there are also some good sparkling wines available for less - Great Western wasnt one of those

i never tried the American Great Western JV. I thought you were talking about this one …

          https://www.nicks.com.au/seppelt-great-western-imperial-rese…

how did the Seppelt compare to the one in your link? ;)

I just saw a very interesting read -

The first wine book I ever read was The Wines, Vineyards and Vignerons of Australia by André Simon who started the Wine and Food Society in London. The book has a price list in it from 1966, which makes fascinating reading. Here are a few examples:

          Penfolds Grange 1960 – $1.75
          $950 today at LL https://www.liquorland.com.au/red-wine/penfolds-grange-shira…

          Penfolds St. Henri 1961 – $1.75
          $135 today at LL https://www.liquorland.com.au/red-wine/penfolds-st-henri-shi…

          Mildara Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 1963 – $1.85
          Around $30 now

The Mildara Cabernet was more expensive than Grange back then, but it was not the most expensive Australian wine of the time. That honour went to Seppelt’s Great Western Imperial Reserve Brut at $3.40.

So the Great Western must have been a good drop then! How old are yours JV? Here's a tasting note for a very old bottle - As for the Imperial Reserve? Surprisingly, it was still good. It was very sweet to taste and amber in colour - Shaun said it would be nice accompanied by dessert. It still had a little bit of carbonation, which was also surprising. Overall, Shaun says this wine is a "credit to the maker, as it's still holding on", potentially 40 years on

Yep, me too. Was lucky to hunt down some St Hugo 2016 as well as Cape Mentelle Cab Merlot 2014, as well as a Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz all for $10 each.

Wow, you did well, not only to get that range but also the older vintages. I had to drive a fair way

to find mine ( got more than what I mentioned above including Penfolds Max and others ),

but was fun escaping the lock down although I was not shopping for essentials.

Cheers to good wine, one of the finer things in life :-)

  • First Choice sells them for $30, $32. I know it's a saving but it is any good? Basically a saving of $12

    • +1

The First Choice price is a clearance price too (and they also have it at 2 for $50)

Top20 champagne blogger says its great value & must try at just under $50 - so for $25 its a fantastic price for anyone that is buying champagne.

I can only go by reviews as I havent tasted it yet but finding better champagne for less wont be easy.

  • Got this from Liquorland few days ago, plus the 1500 flybuys points spend $30.

Not available to QLD (whole state)!!

Haven't tried to order & get it delivered

Even better deal!! Laurent Perrier is $35 a bottle. I got a half case and it came down to $199.50 for six bottles. That’s $33 a bottle. Can post receipt for anyone who wants, this is a good deal and definitely good for gifting

      Where did you find this?

      • First choice liquor Pascoe Vale :)

    • Stunning deal!!!

    • In-store only? I might ring some SA stores.

      • I think it is in store only. Was hidden away.

  • Thanks OP, picked up 2 of each. Good find

    CHARLES DE CAZANOVE BRUT NATURE
… there's plenty of this variety at Liquorland Rowville (Stud Park S/C) in Victoria…. at this 2 for $50 price point.

  • Thanks, OP. These will make great gifts

  • Wine noob here - Got two questions. I'm really interested in buying two bottles for a catch up party with friends when iso is fully over - so within the next few weeks.

    1. I know Pinot Noir is a grape (a difficult grape to grow at that), brut is quite dry on the dryness to sweetness scale, but what I don't know is Sauvage. Just from some Googling - Sauvage is French for wild, it can mean that no sugar, or Syrup was added? Another source said it's a more drier wine than brut?

    2. I believe that all the people at the catch up party are wine noobs like myself. Now I'm making an assumption here but wine noobs don't have a mature palate to appreciate more finer wine (i.e drier wines, high tannins.), so they prefer a more sweeter wine?
Yes I know as everyone at the party is likely to be wine noobs so we should just buy something cheaper as we really wont notice the difference all that much, or be able to appreciate it. But I wanted to buy something more special to celebrate! So should I buy one of each bottle, or two Sauvage Rose, or two Brute Nature?

    • Hi - on point two, champagne is an easy drink and suitable for all palates. It’s a celebration after all!

You can’t go too wrong with a champagne brut as it won’t be too sweet. Sweet sparkling wine is on the riccadona spectrum and much more polarising.

If I were you, I’d do the Laurent Perrier at $35 a bottle rather than the Charles at $25. Or Piper which can usually be bought sub $40. I think champagne always has prestige attached to it; but I would always go for a known quantity for an event :)

      Enjoy

  • Anyone get their delivery or shipping update yet from LL? ETA was today but I haven’t heard. 33 min on hold going strong…
