ugg there's better freeware options than Norton.

    • yep… bloatware gone wild.

    • recommend some?

      • Some free alternatives that don't hog your system like Norton…

Avast Antivirus, or AVG if you don't like that, or see http://alternativeto.net/software/avast-home-edition/ for other alternatives. Microsoft Security Essentials also runs OK in tandem.

Windows firewall has come a long way, but there are other free ones like Comodo, ZoneAlarm and Kerio - see http://alternativeto.net/software/comodo-firewall-pro/ - You can also see there are alternatives in that list which tweak Windows Firewall to increase its capabilities.

Spybot Search and Destroy has a great immunise function that blocks many attack vectors - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ - you need to update it every 3-4 weeks. Spybot also has some good registry tools, as does CCleaner, which I run every now and then.

Spybot also recommends Spyware Blaster that has a similar immunise function which blocks lots of other nasties, including ActiveX stuff - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html - you also need to update this manually every 3-4 weeks.

I also use Firefox, which is in itself more secure than Internet Explorer, and I believe Chrome is similar to Firefox in terms of enhanced security, particularly because everything runs in its own process. On top of that I block javascript in web sites by default using a Firefox extension called NoScript, and only allow it on sites that I deem worthy. A lot of security issues these days are in the browser, and involve stuff like cross site scripting, which NoScript takes care of. AdBlock Plus is also recommended, as it removes lots of clutter from pages, which is where the dodgy scripts often reside.

Additionally I don't open attachments on emails that aren't solicited by me, and I use Thunderbird instead of Outlook/Windows Mail. You can go further and tell your email program not to display images, and for the super paranoid you can tell it to only display things as plain text. You can also get plugins for Thunderbird etc that will de-obfuscate links in emails and show you the real URL a link is pointing to.

Finally, don't download warez and pirated software which are a huge source of security issues, and even be careful with No-CD cracks and the like which can have their legitimate uses (like kids not having to [mis]handle CD's), but are just as likely to have security issues as warez.

Norton being a resource hog is an outdated concept. It was true from around 2003-2008, but it hasn't been for 2-3 years.

        • What tantryl said. Since 2008 Norton products have been quite slick, in the recent one or two versions they actually added a resource manager to explicitly highlight how little of your CPU usage is caused by the program itself, and to point out when other programs are being extreme resource hogs (when they probably shouldn't be). Very useful when the computer slows down a little to be quickly told the culprit.

Is your sales pitch for children or something "Never venture onto the Internet without adequate protection! The Internet can be a dark, scary place with hidden dangers lurking at every corner"

    1) the internet is rarely dark except bertisevil
    2) dangers lurking around every corner, umm there is no corners on the internet
    3) i think Fluxed is something else misspelled

Not convinced this is better value than several free alternatives, let alone a bargain. I find Norton can really impact on performance.

    http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=norton+anti…

    • Yeah, don't be so sure of StaticICE though. First result listed as $11, on their website it's 22 (+shipping). Second listed as $12, was $17 on their website + $16 shipping for me. Third result was listed as $13, was $18 on their website and $18 shipping. Man, I thought people said staticice was crap but had never actually tested it :/

lol I have been browsing the internet unprotected now for 5 years. No viruses :D

    • That's like saying 'I have been having sex unprotected now for 5 years. No viruses or children… (that I know of).'

But chances are u probs have 10 babies and a heap of viruses if u have sex with people comparable to the internet. Coz u know, the net is pretty slutty like that. Everyones using it.

I haven't been running AV for over 5 years now as well. No lols involved. And here's the majority of the reasons why:

        http://archive.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=2&c=9&t=13212&p…

And I use AV scanners quite regularly, mostly as testers for clients. Norton, McAfee, Panda, AVG, AntiVir, Avast, BitDefender and the like. Even Malwarebytes (which I do sell the Pro version of to clients who are, uh, susceptible). And I do HJT, tddskiller, DDS, SecurtiyCheck etc. style stuff regularly, partly for testing, partly to check out my PC. Guess what? No problems.

That said, anyone who starts a comment with lol I would consider "susceptible".

I've got no problem with Norton 360… although that's largely 'cause the backup & anti-spam features are handy.

Many people like this brand and that is fine, but just to let you guys know that this software really make a mess in your computer.
Even when you eliminate from your computer, it still leaves some hidden folders and files that attempts to connect to internet and you don't know what is for!

  • lol, norton? Not a bargain for sure!

  • Norton is one of the worst viruses there is…
