Very good price. these rarely go below $450 on ebay after using the coupon codes.

Yeah a good price indeed. But given Seagate external backup drives sold in Australia comes with 3 year warranty I think getting one with Barracuda Pro inside might be a better deal. Just keep the shucked case for warranty. I have done a few RMA of shucked drives, Seagate never made a noise about them being shucked.

Barracuda Pro comes with higher rated workload/year which might matter if you scrub your raid or btrfs partitions regularly. For a 10TB drive monthly scrubbing is already eating up 120TB/year, leaving just 30 for the regular ironwolf.

      • Under Australian Consumer Law Seagate cannot deny you consumer remedies on a part just because you have removed it from a case. Obviously as long as you didn’t damage it while shucking.

        • I think it is a little different. They can argue that I not only removed it from the case, but also not using it for intended purpose which might lead to it failing. External hdd is not rated for round-the-clock applications, even though they happen to put the B pro inside. If it happens to be a regular Barracuda/WD Green then I will be putting excessive stress using it in NAS.

They dont really care anyway as they just replace it with a recertified drive, probably costing them next to nothing other than the logistics expense.

          • @truetypezk: I bought 2 of the 10tb external drives, just waiting for them to arrive. I'm just going to throw them straight into pc, no raid or NAS. I hope they will be ok.

    • Got it as low as $395 in Dec 2019

  • Are these still louder than the 4tb? I've heard that was a problem with 8tb drives a few years back.

    • I have four of these drives, they are very noisy compared to the old 3TB WD Reds I used to have in there.

      • +1

Strange, I don't find this or my 12TB ironwolf drives to be loud at all.

Edit: same with my 8tb. They make a bit of noise on spinup but then are very quiet, especially given that they're 7200rpm drives.

Not as quiet as my 5400rpm hitachi which is dead silent.

        • When they are idle they are fine, but if they are very active such as when doing a raid scrub they have a very bassy noise almost like a kettle on low boil. I'm running a Qnap TS451, the noise may have more to do with the NAS design then anythings else, it doesn't seem to be very well shielded for noise.

@bowdo: I've got one 8tb inside my node 304. No sound at all when running. It's only as Aekabeer said, a slight sound as it spins up for the first time only. Might very well just be your NAS design.

@ONEMariachi: I've got my server about 25cm near my head and just ran a bunch of simultaneous file transfers (both small and large files) to gum things up a bit. you can make out the 12TB but it's feint, the 8 is almost like it's not even in there. The 10's are in the other PC I'll play with them later.

These 2 are inside a fractal R4 case with some ultra quiet nanoxia 140mm fans (quieter than the fans on my D15 at low rpm) which are slightly louder than the hdds.

  • Using CMR right?

  • Dumb question from the uninformed - can I just put this drive into my desktop, assuming I have a spare sata and power connection?

    • +1

      Absolutely 👌

    • +1

      Yes.

    • But if it’s for desktop use you may be better served by a normal (non NAS) drive for similar money.

    • Better value to get a 10TB expansion drive an shuck it.

  • Apart from media server, media storage and VMs storage.
Why else do people use NAS?

    • +1

My NAS also runs a bunch of home automation crap, but that's secondary to the NAS part.
Storing large software and some git repos is on mine as well, as well as sharing it, but they don't actually take that much space.

But yes, there's not much else to do with a NAS apart from storing files.

      • +8

I mean, the reason for it existing is literally in the name. Network Attached Storage.

        • Some people use it to run docker containers and file servers. Can also be configured to run as a seedbox and act as your own personal vpn server which you know will be more secure since you control the servers and logs. Can also be used to run your plex servers and also help transcode videos.

    • It is probably not a great idea to load too many craps on your NAS. It is a NAS anyway. If you have additional needs maybe get another server.

      • +2

        Craps?

        • I dont mean to insult, crap refers to anything that is not for the purpose of storage. It is a bit of a slippery slope but generally a good idea to separate storage and services.

In the end nothing can replace a proper backup strategy. A cloud based one should be the best value off-site option for home users and it can be fully automated. The only major problem is that it is still not a cold backup so if you happen to get hacked you can still lose everything vs some HDDs in bank vaults.

          • @truetypezk: Some people don’t have a lot of money and can afford maybe $1000 to drop on a home setup. So they go for a NAS that they also run PiHole, etc on.

If you have enough money to buy/build a NAS, and a home server, then go ahead lol.

    • I run several docker services like Pi-Hole and Bitwarden besides having a data store.

    • NVR - Network Video Recorder for video surveillance. This uses a lot of storage and those WD Elements 14TB drives are perfect for it.

Just note these are the older model of the 10tb. The new ones are model ST10000VN0008, new ones are quieter and use less power.

    • Very good spot.

    • Received today and they are the new model.

      • Thats interesting its clearly listed as the older model in the title, well bonus for you i guess.

  • Paid for these $463ea during Oct 2017 with ebay 20% discount. Prices haven't moved much.

  • I bought 2 of these at $390.15 under https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/480927 deal last year. I need to get 2 more but no deal for now.

    • Yeah, looking at one of my previous deals as well, it was around the $390 mark with eBay Plus in December 2019: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/502611

I appreciate COVID-19 has changed pricing and all, but I feel like holding out for a better deal… eventually. For those who need one right now though, seems to be $440 delivered for local stock is a good deal.

  • Is there a motherboard or CPU limitation for drive size?

    • no, only if you are running an older hba card that has a 2tb drive limit or really old hardware maybe 7-10 years old

  • +1

As someone else pointed out this is the older model of 10TB Ironwolf so you may need to update the firmware on this because if it is on the old SC60 firmware there was a bug on it that affected the HDD cashe so may need to update drive firmware to SC61 to fix this bug.

Personally due to this being the older model of Ironwolf and newer one being ST10000VN0008 not having the firmware bug and having standard HDD screw holes this makes not a very good deal for this older HDD and considering you can get the newer model at 469 at shopping express and they had standard price around 460-500 range pre covid-19.

  • ….. and it's gone.

    (now it's $479 + delivery from DeviceDeal)

  • Ah the price is certainly high, unless there's something about that drive that blows the others out of the water.

  • I Have just started on the path of getting WD to replace my 4 x 6tb WD60EFAX drives that are affected by the SMR debarcle in my 918+ im so over WD, I knew i shoul;dve gone with the Ironwolf's. Sigh

  • Still waiting for 10TB to drop to the same price per GB as IronWolf 8TB. That'd be $392 shipped.

    • Snatched it. 12TB Ironwolf for $355 :D

  • Back in stock and I received the new model.
