      Thanks for sharing your opinion

    • vr chat

    • Plenty of "friends" options in VR maybe more than Pancake mode.

By your logic, that makes single player gaming a "fcked up thing to do" as well?

Better tell the 30-plus million people who bought Skyrim, the 28 million people who bought the Witcher 3 and the 15 million people who bought Fallout 4 that they're all "fcked up".

How on earth is playing single player VR games any different from non-VR games and what's wrong with having fun by yourself as opposed to having your ear blasted off with a tirade of verbal abuse by a bunch of screeching retards in Dudebro Military Shooter 17 who refuse to cooperate as a team and play the game properly?

      • Hmmm… think I might just have seen the best OzB comment that has ever been posted.

        • +4

Yeah. People are downvoting you but it's like, has no one seen The Lawnmower Man? Sure, for most people playing alone is 100% fine, but for that rare special case it can turn out pretty messed up. That guy went totally crazy. He was killing people inside the game.

          @saveyourass

Ah yes, the kids who sink enough hours into MMOs, MOBAs and Fornite to qualify for disability payments are definitely the saner minority of the gaming demographic who don't stunt their emotional and social maturation and develop a detrimentally unhealthy fixation with their hobby to the point of addiction and personal ruin.

I still recom playing with friends and having some physical connection is more fun and healther

          Lol.

You honestly believe bonding over online gaming equates to a real emotional connection and genuine socialising?
Let me guess, you were born sometime after 1995 and had all of your major life milestones happen over social media and messaging apps?

It was certainly the "scourge" of evil single player gaming that blackened the gaming industry and mutated what was once an innocent pastime into a hyper-corporatised, soulless cash cow for multinationals to pander increasingly more degenerate entertainment to hordes of antisocial teenagers and definitely not the the trend of always-online, multiplayer games with micro-transactions, endless DLCs, loot boxes, PvP, deliberately psychologically-addictive mechanics and a ridiculous emphasis on in-game unlockables and stat-wh*ring that demands a full-time job's worth of weekly hours to become moderately skilled in.

you can do whatever you do,

So you've gone from labelling an entire demographic of people worldwide as quote/unquote "fcked up" to now just saying it's a personal choice and whatever floats their boat?

I thought single player gaming makes you blind and compels you to murder hookers in real life?

You can disagree with me but personally solo connection with digitial world is not working for me.

I believe that says more about you and your life (or lack thereof) than a preference for singleplayer or multiplayer gaming.

Excess in all things is the undoing of man. Everything in moderation.

It's as simple as that and not "hurrrr singleplayer gaming is the devil". That sounds like some Jack Thompson-level scapegoating for your own failings and lack of self-control/personal responsibility.

Ironically, you might want to take a page from your own user name and quite literally "save your ass" instead of blaming your life's problems on imaginary bogeymen.

          • +1

@Gnostikos: I wasn't expecting you would go that far to attacking someone's personal feeling, but okay.

            • +2

              @Saveyourass: You're hilarious.

First you make one of the most sweeping statements imaginable about an incredibly common entertainment medium and call all those who partake in it "fcked up" and now you're claiming I'm going "too far" for criticising your ridiculous generalisation?

You're a special kind of special.

But sure, the fact that you talk over a microphone to people hundreds of kilometres away from you while you all engage in a glorified form of hide-and-seek definitely makes you morally superior to the dregs of single player gaming, which according to you is some kind of moral panic that needs to be outlawed in order to stop children being transformed into mindless husks.

Whatever cognitive dissonance stops you from realising your own lack of responsibility and resolve is the problem, and not inanimate silicon and electrons bouncing around on a circuit board.

              • +1

@Gnostikos: Okay okay, VR game is for everyone, and playing by yourself is the best. You won, okay. Whatever

              • +1

@Gnostikos: I, too, prefer single player games

                • @BinaryPirate: Couldn't agree more.

Multiplayer gaming has become a quasi-social media platform where it's less about the gaming and more about E-Peen popularity contests and accessorizing your virtual Barbie dolls. That and the completely clusterfcked state most multiplayer games are released in now with their buggy, beta-quality multiplayer experience has put me off that more and more as I get older.

I'd much rather load up Skyrim with a ton of mods and interact with NPCs than some numpties from non-English speaking countries who come onto an Australian server and refuse to communicate or cooperate with their team and/or 15-year olds who take things way too seriously and can't just have some light-hearted fun. Multiplayer gaming is such a mixed bag of experiences whereas your favourite single player games are just enjoyable and smooth every time.

        • +1

The average age of a gamer is around 35 last I checked which means the average gamer existed in a world where there was far more human interaction than today. Many of those gamers would get their social interaction from real life activities with actual human beings and use gaming as chill out / alone time. Personally as a 40 something, I find it increasingly difficult to relate to people in online gaming communities as I find them largely immature especially PvP communities. This is probably because online communities are largely used by younger people who lack the social skills to make real world connections.

    • +2

Its way more fun to go outside the house and do actual things

Edit: Only if you're not from VIC

    • +4

I totally agree, having female friends play with me is way better than VR… although Alyx is a close 2nd.

    • argument could also be made for pr0n but hey we cant all be popular

    • Guys, my apologies if have offended some of the pro VR game players.

I got a VR game set and I do play VR games as well, I loved the POV game experience.

What I have found is, playing VR games with your physical friends are much more fun, the vibe is better comparing just playing by yourself in a room.

      • very different vibe in this comment compared to your other ones. Perhaps best to have posted this in the first place.

        • I dont need someone to tell me what to do mate

  • both cashback and shopback lit up but not sure if this has any cashback at the moment, hard to work out what to class it as.

    • +1

Should be one of the below - pretty sure that means 0% on Shopback!

Amazon Bestsellers Rank: 583 in Video Games (See Top 100 in Video Games)
142 in PC Consoles, Games & Accessories

    • it's under

      Video Games›PC

      which is 0%

  • Tempted but the historical low seems to be 590.

    • +2

568 from last Black Friday sale

EDIT: 568 for Rift S, 569 for Quest

    • If you're tempted I'd grab one while you can. Great piece of kit.

      • +1

        Meh, I grabbed one.

    • +1

With the limited stock they have you're not going to see that price at least until a Quest 2 releases

  • +1

Anyone suggest the Quest over the Rift S now that Oculus Link is out?

    • From my reading the rift s looks to be left in behind in software updates unlike the quest

      • Hmm. Im leaning towards the Quest considering its the same price for more.
Quest has a lower refresh rate (72hz instead of 80hz) but has OLED rather than an LCD panels

        • +1

          I bought the quest,

My thoughts are that I would much prefer to play unwired for beat saber then wired.

          • @Jofzar: Yeah Im gonna go with the Quest :)

      • I don't think people understand what "software updates" means in this case.

The Quest OS is being updated which has nothing to do with Rift S "being left behind" as far as performance, it doesn't have an operating system to optimise and fix bugs for.

  • This is a very good price in Covid times , VR headset have been selling out very quick and many sellers gouging lately too.I expect they will be OOS pretty quick like last time.

  • +2

I'm on the first Rift consumer version, mainly use it with Elite Dangerous to scare myself by jumping to white-dwarf sectors and get nauseous by driving SRVs at full speed on low-gravity planets. Any opinion on whether it's worth upgrading to either of these?

    • +3

Rift S probably not. It's more of a side-grade than an upgrade.

The Quest gets more of Facebook's developer attention. They have not bothered adding anything new in terms of features to the Rift S for a while now. It'll be more of interest of people who look forward to wire-free gaming on the Quest's exclusive library of games but it might not interest people who are only looking to play PC titles.

But since it can play PC games with addition of Oculus Link, the Quest is actually outselling the Rift S and it's relatively painless to set it up to work with Steam games.

    • I think it's worth it, there is significant SDE reduction.

Compatibility with Steam titles is a very mixed bag. often high end titles do not work well through API translation leading to large reductions in GPU settings being required.

    • +2

Definitely not, especially for elite dangerous. While legibility of stuff may be better with the higher resolution, your audio will be significantly worse and space will look grey instead of black as the rift s uses an LCD display where the CV1 uses an OLED

    • Thanks for the advice. The SDE and somewhat low resolution would be the two main reasons for an upgrade. I'll see how bad things get in Victoria and whether I can justify the expense.

Also, thanks for the reminder about the Rift S being LCD… definitely another good reason to get the Quest over the Rift.

  • Can this play HL: Alyx?

    • +1

      Yes ofc

      • Sorry I meant naively on the Quest itself, I don't have a gaming PC.

        • +4

Unfortunately, nope. You'll need a PC. I also doubt they'll port it over because its developed by Valve

    • +2

      Yes.

Can play plugged into PC using Oculus Link, or wirelessly using Virtual Desktop.

  • oculus rift vs htc vive vs valve index?

    • If you are on a budget, get rift S. otherwise Vive pro is a better option.
Index has no local warranty, and I heard there was a design fault on the controller.

Also, dont forget to check the IPD.

      • I'm not sure which headset to go for. All I really want to do is be able to look around in FPS games. Don't have any great urge to play things outside the seated-at-desk-mouse-&-keyboard paradigm.

That and to avoid the screen door effect I've heard some of them have.

        What would you suggest?

  • Can anyone recommend a suitable PC spec to make use of the Quest via Oculus Link (e.g for Alyx)?

    • +3

Any 6-core processor from AMD or Intel to handle the video encoding and streaming to the headset. Alyx demands roughly 16GB RAM, GTX 1660 Super or RX5600 or 5700XT to play smoothly on high fidelity. It's all fairly mid-range ($270 for the CPU, $350~460 for the video card)

One unexpected expense however is the price of VR games. Alyx is expensive and so are the nicer VR games on the Oculus library. The discounts are small and the sales few.

      • Awesome, thank you!

  • +1

Bit the bullet and brought this one

Amazon says it will be here in two days compared to what I have read about it coming from Singapore when purchased from oculus

    • +1

Mines estimated for Monday (WA Metro)

  • Has anyones order been shipped yet?

    • Edit: Mines just been shipped :)

  • Bought this on Tuesday and mine arrived today (Melbourne)

  • For those that bought the Oculus Quest, does anyone have any recommendations for the Link cable? I'm seeing prices varying from $20 to $80.

This is the one that I'm thinking off…
