Apple Watch Series 3 Now? 2020

New baby. Tempted to get an Apple Watch for
-wrist alarm not waking up whole room
-timers
-notifications to see if anything important when I’m back at work
- sleep tracking

I have:
Apple Watch series 0 ie OG (uselessly slow now)
Iphone
Normal watches
Garmin music 645 (somehow notifications only work for calls but not text, UI is passable for setting alarms but finicky)

Should I get the Apple Watch? Series 3 v 5
Re: series 3
it works just fine
Arguably better battery life
Maybe not future proofed with 32 bit apps and older design but still guaranteed to work with new watchos7
I have 20k qantas points which won’t be used in forseeable future bringing this down to $225

Re: series 5
Latest and thus will last the longest
Bluetooth 5.0
Really quite expensive for what it does
EKG not available in aus, falls detection is gimmicky ie most of the newer software features don’t interest me that much

Am I being an idiot? Should I use what I’ve got?
Or get an Apple Watch 3 or 5?
Or bikies?

Thanks

Update:
I went into the Apple store with a pretty open mind (and wallet)
I was very pleasantly surprised how snappy the series 3 was, with only a mild speed difference between the 3 and the 5 - but nothing significant
The 5 seems the better size but this didn’t justify the price increase
So I went with the series 3 Nike 42mm for $200 and some qantas points. Some knock off bands in bound from AliExpress

Thanks all

I got 5 off FB from OZB user for $480, he bought it from ebay for 399 😆 not bad deal.

  • If you want the Sleep Tracking that comes with WatchOS 7 it
will run on Apple’s Watch Series 3, 4 and 5 or Apple Watch 6…

    • Genuine question, not sure if you own one or not. But how often are you able to do the sleep tracking? Everyone I know charges their watch overnight due to them being dead at the end of each day. Especially once the battery starts to die 6months in

      • I have series 4 Apple Watch. 2 hrs charge time if that. I use mine for alarms vibration only. Listening to music, texting, Apple Pay and Sto card. Battery last 2 days but can vary based on usage.

i landed one from the ebay deal and dont really get it

notifications are kinda annoying and easier to deal with on phone anyway. same goes for almost all the app stuff. and then its just another screen to charge every day
timers and alarms can be handled by any cheap watch, or a xiaomi band which vibrates and is also an activity monitor with a 1 month battery
also the apple watch kept reminding me to breathe

im already back on my $20 casio

lmaoo.. you just spoke my thoughts precisely except i was on the series 3.
likewise, i am also back on my $20 casio haha.
its just an annoyance… i swear theres more "clout" value in it than actual functionality. the "new factor" disappears really quicky.
not to mention you cant sport with it… $350 on your wrist, good luck with that
the "relax, breathe for one minute" too hahahah :D

    • Would you be interested in selling?

Life is way too short to be using Apple hardware more than 3 years old. It’s going to be touching your skin every waking moment, spend the extra on the better one for sure. Buy the latest one and save yourself all those seconds of loading time and shit later on. If you’re clumsy then buy one of those ugly plastic bumpers for it. Also the always on watch face will make you look 500% less like an idiot than the blank screen on the series 3. You’ll want the always on watch face if you rely on the watch face that has your upcoming reminders, a blank screen won’t remind you about them and that’s all you get in the series 3 unless you turn your wrist with comically exaggerated “check my watch” movements.

  • If you get a really good deal on the series 3, I'd say go for it, but for $225 I think you'd be better off just buying the series 5 new

  • Currently using a Garmin Instinct, and this will be my watch for some time to come (pun unintentional).
Very much styled like the Casino GShocks, so I don't worry if it gets bumped against a door frame, etc, last over two weeks off a single charge and does the usual notifications, which is probably it's weakest point.
The screen will show a limited amount of text, and you have to scroll through to read the rest of the text. In practical reality, I just use it to check if the notification requires me to actually read it further on the phone or safely ignore it.

Oh, and it has buttons. Probably the most underrated feature, as I got tired of my Vivoactive lighting up when I was sleeping, just because I'd slightly moved.
Now it only lights up when I want it to.

Much as I enjoyed the Vivoactive, I'm unlikely to go back to a 'fancy' watch anytime soon.
Tough, waterproof and with insane battery life, it does everything I need a watch to do.

    Mythoughts

    1) it's good to get babies used to noise so they don't wake up all the time or use phone alarm on silent

    2) maybe but can just check phone, you'll have it on you for 100 photos a day anyway

    3) sleep, hahahahahahahahahaha

Your iPhone needs the latest iOS level to be able to setup the watch. Just make sure it is iPhone 6S or later.

    Our experience.
My man went down the Apple Watch 3 path and I got the Apple Watch 5.

Frankly there isn’t a lot of difference from a day to day practical experience between the watches. I think the biggest issue are the viewing screen area on the Apple 5 and the fact the iOS will, probably, run out earlier for the Apple 3. I don’t use the rest of the options, very often, and I turned off “always on” to preserve the battery.

I think an Apple 3 will be fine but if you want to future proof you should consider the 5; particularly if you get a good price on it.

We got the wifi versions so we don’t need a SIM for it.

People who are back on their old watches just don’t know how to use these watches.
    - The health function is addictive, we have to complete our circles every day.
    - Being able to do a “Dick Tracy” by having a phone on your wrist is cool. No more charging around the house trying to find the damn phone.
    - set reminders and run a calendar
    - SMS from your wrist
    - check the weather
    - control music
    - email notification
    - there is even the ability to see your camera screen from the watch to use as a remote picture trigger.

You do need the phone when you are setting some things up or changing things but this is one of those “I’m surprised how useful it is” devices.

Honestly since we got the watches we rarely take our phones out.

    • Is there much differences in app opening speeds? Hubby doesn’t wish he got the 5?
That’s my only worry. Otherwise I’m leaning towards the 3 based off value proposition

      • The app speeds seem to be similar but we haven’t done any sort of test. The “grubby living in sin better three quarters” does not appear to be lusting after my Apple 5, he is happy with the Apple 3. If Apple follows its usual trajectory you get 2 years worth of iOS upgrades after they stop selling the device. I would look around to see if there are some good deals on the Apple 5 before making up your mind. If you can’t get a good deal on the Apple 3, I would seriously consider buying it from Apple directly. You can return within 14 days for a full refund if you aren’t happy with it. Costco has a few bucks off the Apple 5 but they don’t seem to sell the Apple 3. Again, Costco has a return policy.

        Have fun.
