Air Conditioners - Quality Vs Efficiency

Hi all,

Have recently bought a Daikin 5.0kW Zena air con. I'm pretty happy with the purchase but I've noted a couple of things re air con efficiency:

  1. Within an individual product range the smaller units seem to have significantly better EER ratios than larger ones (ie. cooling output for a given electrical input) - do compressors get less efficient the bigger they are?

  2. There doesn't seem to be a direct link between brand quality and efficiency - I see some cheap brands having similar or better EERs than some of the leading brands. Is this a similar story to Toyota in cars - doesn't necessarily produce the highest output engines but they are renowned for lasting a long time?

Can't comment on the above but I can tell you my Daikin costs me 5c/hr to keep the apartment heated at 19c (up from 15/16c). It's brilliant.
