    White hat vs. grey hat vs. Black hat vs. state sponsored.

    A white hat hacker (or ethical hacker) is somebody who hacks with good intention. They will find a vulnerability in your website/software and let you know how they did it, possibly how to fix it, or at least that you should fix it.
    A grey hate straddles the line between good and bad. Depending on the time of month they will either hack for malicious purposes or with good intention. They may let you know about a vulnerability, or they may take advantage of it.
    A black hat hacker is somebody with malicious intent. These are your people encrypting your file system and holding you to ransom. These are your run of the mill cyber criminals. Bad people.
    A state sponsored hacker is just a grey/black hat with Govt. protection and $'s to back them. North Korea, Iran, Russia, United States, etc.
