Free Speed Boost for nbn Fixed Line Customers (Modem Reboot Required, Selected Areas)

2620

Hi all. From the outset, please note this may not work for everyone but has certainly worked for me and a few others I've asked to test. Let us know in the comments how it went for you. Read this article on Whirlpool so gave it a go. Previously getting 46/17Mbps on Speedtest but now getting 54/18Mbps after a modem power cycle. Not sure what the '15% overprovisioning' really means, so I'll let the experts comment below. This article has a lot more information. Hope it works for you. Stay safe, and enjoy :)

Edit: Telstra announcement.

Mod Note: This is not specific to Telstra, the deal is just linked to a Speedtest hosted by Telstra.

    • Well, this explains why I've been getting 109ish download speeds the last few weeks. I thought my new router somehow broke the internet.

  • +3

Can confirm this works. My Telstra connection's mid-tier plan on FTTP has always been up to 44/15 and now I'm getting around 54/18.

  • +1

Fixed wireless NBN customers are still getting screwed.

    • Things like this make me want to move from an FTTN area.

  • I am getting 54 on Optus NBN now.
Not sure what is was before, think mid-high 40s

    • Seems to have worked :)

  • +2

LOL @TA this is not really a deal or freebie!

    good to know about.

    • Saw this so assumed it was ok to post :)

      • +2

        wow
i'm surprised they upgraded speed by 50mbps for free!

        all ways dangerous to assume
(makes an ass of u and me :P)

      • +5

I think it is comparable to this post
        HTTP://ozbargain.com.au/node/358063

one of the most useful things I've learnt on this site. imo

    • +1

But it’s from TA! That’s OK then ;P

      • +4

        lol.
        nah

at the end of the day its useful to know about.

        so doesn't really matter!
but i'd say seems more appropriate for the forums

    • C'mon man… Everything TA posts is always a deal…a BIG Deal!

  • What exactly is the process here? Turn off modem and turn back on????

    • +2

Turned off nbn modem 5 minutes and back on….same speed : (

      (am with TPG)

      • Same

      • +1

The ISP has to implement it. Try again in a month.

      • ditto with internode

    • ditto with Exetel

  • +2

On Telstra, just went from 93 to 107

    • Great! Thanks for confirming :)

  • +1

No provisioning for me on Superloop 100/40 Getting: 95/36

    https://www.speedtest.net/result/9795197770

:( Wheres my free extra speed…

    • Great ping speed however lol.

      • +1

        Yeah :P i actually had 1ms with AussieBB :O

        • I get 4ms for a Sydney server with Aussie. Do you live in the city?

    • I'm getting 102/19 with Superloop in Brisbane, previously would be getting ~94/19.

      https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/6309709301

    • :0

    • Same here :(

    • Superloop 107/37 (HFC)

    • I rebooted a week or so ago and noticed I was getting 256/23 on SuperLoop and thought it was just the speedtest process giving preference to Superloop(I’ve heard conspiracy theories that some do this to boost advertising revenue???). Just ran speedtest on the Telstra server and still getting 256/23. I’m on the Aspley poi which had an upgrade on Tuesday morning - which seemed initially to slow the network down but now is obviously working perfectly.

  • Is this only for Telstra customers or for works for others like TPG, Dodo, etc. Can anyone confirm?

    • +1

It's for all RSPs on the NBN network but they have to make some sort of change to get it working on the RSP side and NBN needs to make some sort of change on the POI side.

  • No over-provisioning on Telstra yet, sync rate still 107735/44199

    • what about now?

      • I'll wait another week before I give it another resync, I can't be rebooting it every 5 mins!

        • LOL
I was just being a clown!
Hopefully, it works next week then

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Just got a notification from Telstra that NBN Co will be performing maintenance early next week. That's probably when they will be applying the overprovisioning setting to the DSLAM. I'll check again then.

            • @forumninja: Thx for the update. ☺

    • +1

      what about now?

  • Is there anything we need to do apart from rebooting modem/router?

  • +2

Only certain POIs have been enabled - the rest are due to be done late August I believe

    • Do we know which ones have been enabled?

      • Ask your ISP.

  • No bueno on ABB.

    • Aussie BB has not changed over all connections. They said more to come in August.

    • +1

I've just checked on my 100/40 plan, and am up to 109 Mbps from around 95 Mbps :)

  • +7

I would be happy to have 15% discount instead of having a 15% speed increase.

    • Yes please :)

      • +1

Out of interest why do you pay for Telstra, when there is better and cheaper?

        • +1

You can get deals with Telstra. I'm paying $90 for 100/40. Is there anyone better and cheaper than that?

        • good customer service maybe? I'm paying $80 for HFC 100/40 with Telstra currently. They give out free mobile modem if the internet is down.

          • +2

@yfxsmike: That's a great price, how did you get that?

Good customer service? Are you having a laugh? They have to be one of the worst, if not the worst, company I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

            • +1

@chromium: your mileage may vary. For me, the customer service can be good if you pick up the phone and complain all the way to get an Australian rep. I got that price because my plan was $80 cable with 100 down speed and they switched me to NBN, I asked to keep the same speed and plan (price).

          • @yfxsmike: How do you do these deals? They are advertising $110 for 100/40 and I am on that

          • @yfxsmike: Good customer service? I haven't even been able to get them to pick up the phone recently.

        • +1

Paying $89 for NBN 100/40 and free 4G backup. So why not?

          • @Viospeed: How is everyone getting 100/40 for $90? I am paying $110 for the same with Telstra

            • +1

@pramki: probably grandfathered from pre-NBN bundled plans.

  • +7

Belong in the forums, this isn't something that's new multiple ISP's do it and have been for weeks now.

    • Was going to post in forums, until I saw this.

      • That was an actual speed boost though this is merely giving people closer to the exact speeds they are already paying for.

        • +12

Mate, I'm just a messenger here and passing on news that a lot of people don't know about. If you believe it belongs in the forums, I'm not going to argue with you. Simply hit the report button and let the mods make the call. Thanks.

          • +1

@tightarse: Yeah I appreciate the gesture but this is more of a correction to the issue of not getting what you pay for and not an outright upgrade.

            • -1

@AusNugz: The deal is a speed boost 5% to quoted rate or 15% from typical evening speed. To get the deal, you need to click the power button on your modem. I agree with TA, I think it is a deal.

      • lol that was a 100% speed boost vs 15%

and see what the wisest ozbargainer had to say then

I am on 100/40 plan. I do schedule reboot every night.
At this peak time I am seeing just over my allocation which is great as I normally get around 80-85/25-30.
May have worked for me too!

    • +1

What's the benefit of doing a scheduled reboot every night? Just curious.

      • +1

It might help you fry your router quicker.

Restarting ICT equipment creates high electrical power fluctuations, which are detrimental for its life span.

      • I have custom Merlin firmware on my router and physical firewalls. I have couple of Cron jobs for the backup and update, which run evwrynight.. It cleans up after that.

In my previous role as an ISP we used to puah firmware update via TR69 during 2 am and 4 am, so a habit thing as well.

  • +1

Telstra Velocity plans excluded as usual..
    I can’t wait to move..

Great deal though for the rest of you!
Cheers TA! Hope life’s treating you well mate.

  • I rebooted on 1 July and downloads increased to >13 MBps on 100 Mbps HFC
Just re-read the deal, not Telstra but ABB

  • +1

Worked on Optus HFC. Am on 50/20, and now getting 54-55ish/19

    • Optus on NBN100 getting 90mpbs only

    • Optus FTTC 100/40 is still only getting 86 / 34. Not in an NBN established area - connections only started in the area this month (I have only been connected one week).

      • +1

I am on Optus FTTC and was getting 90/34 up until about a week ago when the modem rebooted during the night, now regularly around 98+/36

  • With Belong FTTC on 30mb plan, after rebooting, still gets 28/15 with 50ms ping. Nothing has changed, unfortunately.

    • You are likely hitting a Belong shaping mechanism and not an NBN one as their is no 30/20 NBN plan.
i.e You are on a 50/20 plan shaped by Belong and not hitting the NBN limit.

      • Mate has Belong FTTB 30/20 package but he says that he is getting around 47/18 with ping 8ms. Is there any difference in FTTB?

        • +1

Belong has only rolled out shaping to some areas and customers.

      • @AusNugz
You're probably right. Just checked Belong webpage, they seem to shape starter plan(30 MB) evening speed to 30Mbps…

        • I'm on the Belong starter plan and my speeds are shaped permanently to 30 Mbps, not just during evenings. It was great for the first couple of months before they started shaping, but not so good now and I'll be leaving as soon as my 12 month contract expires.

  • Telstra, no change :(

  • Looks like it applies to HFC as well. Now getting 109mbps instead of typical 95mbps

    • Yup - I'm on HFC and have the boost, too.

  • I'm FTTN and I noticed I was getting 50+Mbps after a recent reboot it's like I'm actually getting what I should be I'm pretty stoked to be on a 4 MS ping

  • No change here, i'm on a 100/40 and getting 64.8/19.7 ABB

    • Wow that's terrible. Which ISP and what connection type? Almost sounds like you should just pay for 50/20

      • It's Aussie Broadband FTTC

        • +5

Yeah you should either downgrade to 50/20 or get someone in to check your internal wiring and only have 1 socket connected. You should easily be achieving 90/30+
