  • Any one please advise, this one to buy or the one with 4k display but 9th gen processor. Thanks

    • If you are not gaming and don't want the 17" screen, meaning you will use the laptop screen a ton, go for the 4k.
If you are doing renderings or machine learning or anything that requires a big fat graphics card, go for the g7.

      • I won't be gaming much , but will be using for coping files and video editing. Will it have any benefit getting this instead of 15 inch as that one is old processor but with 4k display?

        • +1

Not really, video editing uses cpu and that "old" cpu is only 3% slower, it is ridiculous the 10th generation of intel….shame that amd is not pairing with rtx as pointed in previous comments

          https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-9750H-vs…

Also, the xps has 100% rgb, I think that is important for video and image editing, at the least the colors would have some fidelity (vs 78% ntsc in the g7).
If you ask me, for the uses you mentioned, I would go for the xps.

          • @catchthemall: thanks .

          • @catchthemall: I'm not sure I agree. A lot of video editors are now using the GPU to offload their compute load, have a look at this -

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G9XMjS6bHY

The CPU is sitting at 30% because the GPU is the bottleneck. The laptop in the video has an i9 but is the same model.

            • @bindok: I understand your point. There were so many givens in my answer that is hard not to raise points against it. My assumptions were:

              • Answer needed to be short and choose one of two laptops
              • Edit footage as a hobbyist, otherwise you would go for a desktop
              • Not using it at a professional level with tons of video effects or CGI, otherwise, you'd go for a desktop
              • Short videos, 10 - 30 min, youtube style
              • Portability and a good laptop screen
              • Recommendations like in this website are TLDR:

              https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems…

It would have been good if the guy in the youtube video shown us what he was editing, now I am a bit curious that a video can rev up a gpu but not the cpu.

      • I am sort of in the same boat.

I need something to keep me busy over the next 6 weeks. I want to play games but it wont be the latest games at highest settings like rise of nations, city skylines etc. I do have a drone and want to edit those videos to share etc. I really like the G7 but I would hate the 3.2kg and 17" screen. I like the size, weight, battery and the screen on XPS 15. I don't care about the processor as it's almost the same but the graphics card seems to be twice as good on G7. Would i really feel the difference when editing videos? I also have a 27" gaming monitor that I might connect to the laptop every now and then to play games/video editing etc.

Also don't want to wait till September for it. So hard to decide.

        • Is the discounted pricing ending today?

          • +1

@Mkm: Yes, mate, the offer ends today haha, adding some pressure.

@All Blacks NZ, editing video doesn't use the graphic card, so the same for Mkm, if your main purpose is video editing I would get the one with the gorgeous screen, 4k and 100% rgb, that is what compensates for the graphics card in the g7. Also the portability.

Wish you both best of luck in choosing one!

  • Anyone plan to use a docking station with the G7?

    • +1

Have been thinking about this too, are there any recommended docks for this laptop?

EDIT: Had a chat to Dell, the recommended the Dell D6000 dock - https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/accessories/apd/452-bczf

      • I read a lot of issue online with using docking station with G7, even products recommended by Dell has a lot of problems. I reckon we need to do plenty of research before getting one.

        • Oh really, I'm now looking into the WD19 line of docks, I think having a power button on the dock would be handy so you don't have to keep opening and closing the laptop lid!

  • Got my order number from Dell…… One of the ways to track it says by the 19th of August…. the other one says 7th-10th of September…

    • The link I sent is the most accurate - last time it said almost a month difference on the Dell website - I also confirmed this info with a Dell rep, they said they always over-estimate on their website so they get less complaints. What date does it say through the DB SCHENKER link I shared on page 5?

      • 7th to 10th September…

        • With Covid-19. Most seller are overestimating. Hopefully you can get it earlier then that. I still haven’t got the Dell order number yet. 😓

    • Hey mate, could you please let me know when did you get an email from Dell or whoever about confirmation of shipment (and when did you order it). I got an email from Ebay on 29th of July but still didnt get confirmation from Dell. I think I was 198th of 200th people that bought it haha, so how long do you think will take them to confirm my purchase or dispatch cause all I have now is my Ebay confirmation that I purchased it but nothing from Dell and it has been 12 days and still nothing. I understand I might have to wait a month until my one comes in but just thought that Dell would at least confirm purchase.

      • Hey mate. I ordered mine on the 28th of July and received the dell tracking number on the 7th.

        • I ordered on 29th and still haven't gotten a tracking number. I'm assuming it'll come through on Monday / Tuesday.

        • Thanks mate, probably you must have been one of the first ones, I literally bought my one when it said 2 more left haha

      • For the first batch of 50, they got their emails around 2 weeks before the ETA. So I guess ours will arrive around the 17th. Long wait but worth it for the price.

        • Ok, sounds good, it was honeslty my first big purchase on Ebay soo I started to overthink if I did it right hahah. Thanks for reply

  • My order is shipped, I am the first 10 orders. Was given an order number, it says arrives by 21st August. you can check the order here once you get your order number: https://www.dell.com/support/orders/au/en/audhs1

  • Yeah mine has shipped with the confirmation email at 1am. Doesn't give me a proper eta. Not sure where it's sent from either. Just says between 12th-20th. Closer to the 12th the better. I am order 39

    • How did you see what order you are?

      • They added the order number under eBays “tracking number”

        • I just wanted to see what unit number I purchased, pretty sure was in the first 50, but wanted to double check.

        • I can only see eBay order number 27-xxxxx-xxxxx. Does it means my order has not been processed yet?

          • +2

@bypeng: You should get a separate email from eBay informing you that your order is on your way, then you can see the order number

          • +1

@bypeng: You get an email from dell and a dellorderno87xxxxxxxxxxx in ebay .

    • +1

It ships from Malaysia and they literally ship it over - via sea freight. Your ETA for the first few days / week is always way off, but it'll update thereafter on a daily basis. Last order I placed went from 1 and a half months, to 3 weeks and then ended up coming in 2 weeks. The date on the Dell website never changed until the day before it arrived.

      • cool thanks for the info

        • +2

Mine just arrived. I ordered 1 day after it went live (the very next morning.)

Here is more info on my G7 7700, the RAM is Samsung DDR4 3200MHz, but running at 2933MHz due to Intel limitation.

    • Does yours have finger print reader? I received an order update which says mine has, also did you try overclocking the gpu? I was able to overclock my 2070 Max p in my asus strix 2 to 1800 mhz stable and temp at 74-76 C and performance boost of between 10 to 15 percent, and any updates on battery life on normal usage (word YouTube etc using battery saver mode), sorry for too many questions

      • +3

Yes, fingerprint reader on the power button, which I find it's a hit and miss, compare to my previous Dell laptop it worked 95% of the time, but on this G7, maybe 50/50.
When I talked about temperature, I only talked about CPU temp, GPU temp normally OK, around 70-80C max. I wouldn't dare to OC GPU on a laptop, you're asking for trouble if you do.

One last question: the weight range dell provides is Starting weight: 2.85 kg (6.28 lb) x Weight (maximum): 3.29 kg (7.25 lb)

Are you able to provide actual weight? Hope it's under 3kg

@ozvictor : there are so many questions covered by kml22 but it's spread throughout the post, could you please put them at front page as FAQ? I'm happy to collect them and pass it on if you're happy to do so?

      • +7

        2.8KG

        https://ibb.co/7vGgr5X

Sure do a FAQ and reference me on the Info and use the photo link.

        • I actually have a question for you, how stable is the laptop hinge? on the photo it looks relatively small compare to the laptop size. Thanks

          • +2

@ozvictor: Quiet stable, no issue with it. I can open laptop with one hand also.

            • @kml22: I can see that the monitor display has 9ms, do I need to be concerned? Does yours have the same 9ms display as well?

      • +1

Yes I am happy to update the post if could please send me the info, thanks

        • +4

Come on guys, I put in so much effort already :).

      • I think 3.29 is including the charger, which is huge

  • If anyone changes their mind let me know, I'd like to buy a new one, unopened. DM me, thanks.

  • I just notice that the display shows 9ms, is it referring to a response time? If it is, do I need to be concerned because most monitor has 3ms or less response time?

    • slight ghosting for gaming?

  • So the tracking on

    https://dellpleportal.dbschenker.com.au/ETA/ETAquery?Length=…

says "Your order is under exceptions management at factory. The ETA of Between 03/09/2020 And 09/09/2020. Call customer support on 1 800 812 393, If you would like our friendly agents to help you resolve an issue with your order"

That seems like a long way away considering i ordered it on the 28/07/2020

    • I just got the same message from tracking site: “ "Your order is under exceptions management at factory. The ETA of Between 03/09/2020 And 09/09/2020”

I ordered on the 31 Jul. Dell probably underestimated the buying power of Ozbargain.

      • I'd guess that they haven't started production on our orders as it hasn't left the factory yet and on the Dell website it hasn't been marked as build complete yet. Once it has left the warehouse, the above link will be best - but until then we can only hope it'll be shipped soon.

        • yep got the same as well. Ordered on 29 July

Your order is under exceptions management at factory. The ETA of Between 02/09/2020 And 08/09/2020. Call customer support on 1 800 812 393, If you would like our friendly agents to help you resolve an issue with your order.

  • +1

Mine just changed to delivery for today.

    • When did you order yours?

      • Nb.98, 28th of July at 8PM I think

        • Interesting, let me know if you actually receive it today, that would be super exciting.

        • That's pretty good, I bought mine at 3pm that day, hopefully mine isn't too far away either.

    • Which of the trackers was saying it was for delivery today?

      • The same one you posted just above

    • +2

So did mine this morning. Updated from 1st sept to today. But a couple hours later, it has been updated again to between 11/08 and 12/08

      • awesome 👍

      • Damn, did seem to good to be true. Think we are all going to get them early September.

      • +2

Ok Mine just did the same, ETA 11 or 12/08.

        • +2

          Yeah I got

          11/08/2020 And 12/08/2020

    • Mine says 2nd to 9th of September when i finally got an update with tracking number. The eBay listing had 13th to 21st of August when i placed it and still shows that.

Order placed 29th July at 9.44am

Hoping it gets an updated delivery date thats in the original window though. Waiting 1+ month is way too long.

  • I now have a star track con number and it's coming from Sydney and due to arrive tomorrow according to the star track website.

    • +1

really? Wow, that did a 180. How did you find out the startrack con number?

      • Yeah some good news.
Directly from the link you provided. Tks!
        https://dellpleportal.dbschenker.com.au/ETA/ETAquery?Length=…

It previously had a range of 11th and 12th. Now all the info has changed to a link to startracks website with the con number.

        • Damn… hope mine does soon too then. Still saying the same thing for me

          • @j-scrizz: I'd say a lot of people in the first 100 orders will be getting them tomorrow if they live in Sydney or melbourne.
It says its currently being trucked between syd and melb.

I'm in regional Victoria ..it says due out tomorrow, but im not holding my breath…..

            • @jt0505t: Hmm i ordered at around 11am on the 28th. I think i must be in the first 100. I'm in Melbourne. Ahh well fingers crossed.

  • Just wondering how quickly you got a notification from Ebay?

I ordered mine on the 5th of August, still haven't received an email or any sort of notification…

Also, can anyone confirm it has 2 M.2 drive slots?

    Cheers,

    • Ordered mine on the 1st Aug and got the order number to check the ETA this afternoon.

Your order is under exceptions management at factory. The ETA of Between 03/09/2020 And 09/09/2020.

I just checked on the https://www.dell.com/support/orders/au/en/audhs1 link and it says that it should be arriving on 25th Aug.

      • Might want to check that again. Mine said the same thing this morning and now it's been updated…

        "Estimated Delivery Date: 4/09/2020 (updated)

Your order has been delayed. Your order is very important to us and we intend to ship it as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience."

Really disappointing Dell, hopefully the laptop isn't as disappointing as their service.

        • Yep. Mines saying the same thing…

        • Mine still says 25 Aug. We are all at the mercy of Dell now.

  • +1

My package has arrived at my local depot :D hopefully it ll be delivered tomorrow by startrack. I checked the website https://www.dell.com/support/orders/au/en/audhs1 and they have updated my shipping details with a startrack tracking number SCXXX. Everyone check yours plz!!

  • i'm pretty sure it worked something like this below

Dell initially released in its first batch of approx 100? on ebay to be sold and delivered by a date range, which was 12th - 20th aug

Once that was successfully sold out, they then decided to restocked additional 100? laptops and changed the date range as it also needed to be assembled.

Once that was successfully sold out, they then decided to restocked additional 100? laptops and changed the date range as it also needed to be assembled.

Once that was successfully sold out, they then decided to restocked additional 100? laptops and changed the date range as it also needed to be assembled.

    etc

Although you might have only purchased the laptop 1 day after the deal started, you would unfortunately be on the 3rd batch as it sold pretty fast… Your Ebay purchase email would reflect that approx date.

I guess the sale probably went better than their expectations.

  • Also I've also noticed on my Con Number through Star Track, that dell uses a FIXED PRICE PREMIUM(FPP) service with Dell. So its the fastest courier service Star Track has to offer.

    • You are very lucky, Let us know when you receive it.
I am just a little bit salty as I am pretty sure I was one of the first to order it, and now I am not expected to get it till September 3rd.
anyway cant wait to hear your thoughts on the device!

      • go back to the eBay item, click on the history of items sold, you will see your number spot if you count from the 1st purchase to yours ha.

Yeah I will let you know how it is, hopefully it's everything we hoped for!
I hope you get yours really soon.

  • +1

    Anyone got it yet?

    • +1

They probably are busying playing games now. LOL

    • +1

mine has updated to onboard for delivery… I'm.not even home at the moment fml..

    • +3

Mine just arrived. I ordered 1 day after it went live (early next morning)

      • was your tracking accurate?

When you type your order no. If shipped it provides a startrack link - that link is accurate and detailed.

          • @Jacko3000: sighh.. still 3rd of September for me. What a Joke, I was one of the first to order.

            • @j-scrizz: damn… what number queue were you that bought it? (from the ebay listing)

              • @jt0505t: Im not sure, when i looked at the history it was only showing the last 100 bought.

But I am quite high up as I ordered it around 10am-11am on the 28th (first day of the sale)

                • @j-scrizz: hmm, i thought dell would of prioritised the buying order… Did you pay as soon as you checked out? or pay the following day? Doesn't seem fair to me your order is held up…. I bought it @ 3:30pm that afternoon on the 28th.

                  Could be worse
Some poor guy just bought one Yesterday @ $2499, he will probably have to wait until mid September.

      • It's a bloody good laptop, isn't it?

        • Will try this weekend! So excited
